Wrong. Shake his hand. Thank him for representing himself and the university with dignity. Tell him you'll be rooting for him in his career because he's a good man. Then fire him in whatever way provides him the most dignified exit, while also attempting to hang on to signed recruits.

This. So this. Who wants this job if they see their potential boss cutting ties with a coach in anything but a classy way? Whitman is classy. He gets it.

I have been a Groce supporter but I thought he made a terrible mistake with 2 minutes left we had the ball up 2 and we needed to get Tejon in the game and we didn't and didn't score, i thought was a killer. Tejon is a great defensive player and when he got in foul trouble and went out, it began the
non stop going to the hole garbage by the point guard that we had seen all year. I do not want an average guy brought in, if we make a move open the checkbook and get somebody great. I am so upset and distraught I don't know what to do with myself

This. Groce has been a good representative of our university. He's a good man - by all accounts a devoted family man, productive citizen, and genuinely nice person. I think Josh Whitman seems like a good person, too. I'm sure this process will be conducted with compassion and sensitivity, as it should be.

I hope, like most of us, that Groce succeeds going forward. He decided to live or die with his system and his guys. I wish it would have worked out better. I'll never harbor personal ill will toward Groce or Tracy, but the end of this game perfectly summed up an unfortunate era in the history of our storied program. Let's all move forward with grace and hope for better days.

Not ONE FG in last 4:30 of game. Not a good way to close out a game with 3 Seniors on the floor.
0-6

It's almost like holding the ball for 30 seconds and asking Malcolm to break down the entire defense off the dribble from 35 feet out was not a great coaching move

Here's how much more Whitman gets "it" than the majority of this fan base.

Bill Cubit was 100% going to coach the 2016 season. You know why? Because JW had not found a "home run" replacement. Somehow, someway, Lovie Smith signed on board and Whitman moved quickly.

I firmly believe in JW. If that means Groce is back next year because there simply isn't a "home run hire" out there at this point, it just reaffirms my faith in how much JW truly gets it.

I agree that JG the human being is likable and a guy I would love as a next door neighbor. As a University rep? I can't remember one full season where all of his players stayed out of the police blotter. In his one trip to the NCAA (with another coach's recruits), his assistant coach made physical contact with a ref and is still under suspension from NCAA play. And the last one is subjective, but after one year I was sick of folksy coach double-speak that never materialized into winning results. I do not think he was a good or worthy representative at all. His best bet is to be a career top assistant (RECRUITER) under a coach who understands basketball.

Agreed. I really like Groce. I hope for the best. I was pulling for him through this run and hoped he would win this and one game in the BTT. That would have been an awesome turn around.

However, even if the above happened I would have wanted him gone as our coach. Pulling off an NCAA tourney bid this year didn't seem right. It was a bad year. I would have wanted it for our coach and team, but it doesn't change the fact that this year has been bad. No matter what this team did, I'm done with this regime.

Too bad for the seniors. I hope they win the BTT somehow and still get their NCAA tourney experience!

lol...this was such an Illinois thing to do. Get everyone's hopes up and win the tough matches but lose what should be a gimme. Typical Illinois of the last couple of years.

Honestly, I had these same feelings in the 80's, 90's, 00's and today. The only time I felt comfortable at the end of a close game was with Self teams. Not sure if the results were significantly better. It was just a confidence.

I'm a bit nervous that somehow Groce won't get fired. I really hope I'm wrong.

Today's loss should really calm your nerves.

Gang, this is still a Top (15? 20? 25? win) program ALL TIME. The state is rich with recruiting potential, the facilities have been upgraded and the program has a history of being aggressive in its pursuit of top coaches. This will be a top-5 opening, if not top, barring Crean getting launched from IU. There are a lot of high-caliber coaches at smaller schools or "little brother" schools in power conferences that would LOVE the Illinois job.

We have missed the NCAA Tournament 4 years in a row, Groce has won 41% of his Big Ten games and we have finished 7th/8th/7th/12th/9th in conference.

The most experienced team in Illinois history with one of the greatest players every to don the uniform finished 9th vs. arguably one of the worst collection of Big Ten conference teams in decades and missed the tournament.

If John Groce is retained you should be extremely worried, not about Groce or the basketball program...but about Josh Whitman.

Presser recap:

"I liked our energy"
"the third season begins next week"
"Our will to win was excellent"

I'm hoping I don't have to hear this much longer.

John Groce said this before the Rutgers game in reference to the MSU win:

Groce: Always a concern after you have an emotional win. Can have a letdown & let your guard down. But that's not what we're about.

Oops

So the review out of bounds plays with under 2 min. That killed Groce and a sweet 16 chance will undo his chance to get back in and cost him his job. We've come full circle
