Totally random observation from your list.
Looking at the guys being fired, Gottfried and Crean are clearly better coaches than Groce, would be easily attainable, but won't sniff this position. Yet some want Groce to return. Unbelievable.

Crean is not a better coach than Groce. The same, maybe, but better...no.

I don't understand how when you add up the total percentage of the poll it gets to like 150%.

It should add up to 200%. If I understood the question(s) being asked, you're supposed to pick one of the first 6 choices and one of the last two choices. Clearly not everyone voted twice.

^^^^Respectfully disagree....even if true his recruiting far surpasses Groce, which automatically makes him a better coach. That is a primary guideline nowadays when hiring one afterall.

That's a joke right?

What makes you think he is a better coach than Groce? He has done way less with more talent this year than Groce. He is about to miss the tournament and be fired after being top 10 at one point this season. Is he a better coach? Possibly. CLEARLY a better coach? NO chance

I hate Crean, but he did have some major injury issues this year. That being said, I don't think he's a good coach. He's one of those guys who does little with a lot of talent pretty regularly. He's a much better recruiter than Groce, but they're both bad coaches.

I guess I always thought this was part of being a coach in college basketball.

If we're just talking about in-game coaching, I see Groce as little more than a cheerleader. Our team usually looks about as organized as 5 random guys showing up at IMPE (or was it 4?) to sweat off some beer from the previous night. I don't watch much IU bball so I can't really comment on Crean's game coaching but I don't see that he could be worse than Groce.

I agree that recruiting is a huge part of having success as a coach, but it doesn't make you a good COACH (see: Williams, Roy). Crean isn't as bad as Groce in term of in-game coaching (I'm not sure I've seen many power 5 coaches who are), but he's certainly not what I would consider a good in-game coach.

Totally agree. And just to be clear, I'd rather we have a player-coach next year than hire Crean. The guy makes me ill.

I agree Groce has a very good roster for the future, I think he can win big with it, hopefully if he is let go the new coach can keep it and we don't take several steps back

Agree about he better roster, but can he coach it. His record says it's not going to happen.

I'm late with this comment, but I can't emphasize it enough: it makes me physically ill to hear Illini basketball "fans" actively and intentionally degrade our history and potential as a program all in the name of defending a single coach, whomever that coach might be at the time. It's bewildering.

First year Groce was here we were within a possession of beating 2 seed Miami to get to the sweet 16, he can coach, is he Gregg Marshall or Izzo? No
We have not had a great roster to even know, no NBA players and terrible point guard play. Lucas has changed that and if he didn't have to come out the other day with foul trouble we probably win. The idea that Groce can't coach at all is ridiculous, Tate, Abrams, Hill, Black and Morgan is a very avg team at best, Lucas made it a lot better. He will win with this talent, now if you can get a great coach maybe you do it

The prospects of getting guys like Smith & Liddell, to buttress our current '17 crop of recruits, not to mention our investment in other key recruiting targets in both '18 and '19.........these are just some of the reasons why I can envision better days ahead for Groce and this program, and I think Whitman feels similarly.

...

And yet, all of this could hinge on the outcome of the next several days.:faint:

This is why I still don't mind the idea of Groce staying. It's not the X's and O's, it's the Jimmys and Joes. I don't really care who our coach is as long as he can bring in the players. I just really can't bear the thought of more botched recruiting years. Weber had a few, Groce had a really weak one in 2014 (although Finke and Black are a lot better than the 2006, 2008 or 2012 classes!). 2015 is looking pretty bad too, outside of JCL---although it seemed good at the time.

Groce finally has a class with stars at the 1 and 5, and a lot of downstate talent coming up in the next couple of years. I don't really care who our next coach is as long as he can get those guys. That's going to matter a lot more than anything else a coach does, IMO
