Ok 1 week from today the new Illini coach is.... Cuonzo Martin. Just a guess and will look back to see if I was right or wrong. Everyone lets see your pick, not your wish. Lets have some fun with it and see who hits it.

Walker on an interim basis.

Really. Do you know how good a coach his dad was ?

Your solution to the head coaching search is to hire an alum who currently coaches at a high school in Champaign because his deceased father was a good assistant?

It's very early. Despite what others think, I still think Archie is a strong possibility. Greg Marshall is gaining steam. Cuonzo possibly the fallback. Just have to trust Whitman. I don't see how this will end badly if Whitman is working with $4-5 million per year.

Still have 5 pages of catch-up ahead but I'm betting myself that Obelix chimes in on how this has no impact :D

"I think Monty wanted Illinois more than Illinois wanted Monty. I believe there may be some face-saving going on from him with that report."

This is from Dave Wisch. What does this mean?

Do you know how good a coach his dad was at Peoria ? I thought the game was to list all possible people and see who would be right. If that's not the game then I am sorry.

He was fired at Parkland for locking his kids in the gym overnight. He was the interim for 1 year at Central after his dad passed away. That 1 year was a total disaster at Central. He was quickly replaced.

It means Monty turned us down before we turned him down. Kinda like Crean did when he was at Marquette. I don't think this is how it went down though.

Pretty sure a prominent champaign businessman lives in North Carolina. It was my first thought when the flight there was mentioned earlier in the thread. He has his own jet and makes the trek often.

I'm certainly not refuting you, but as of late last night the flight to Wilmington was not scheduled officially with air traffic control. Not sure if it makes a difference...

For one I wouldn't touch Capel. Plus the duke coaching tree guys are all gunning for that gig anyway. No reason to get in the middle of that.

I don't understand the dislike for the Duke coaching tree around here. Learning in one the most successful programs in the country under one of the most successful coaches in the game can't be all bad. If I recall during our last coaching search most people wanted no part of Chris Collins coming here but, looks like he is working out ok for Northwestern.

I think it's because the K tree hasn't been very successful. Jeff Capel @ OU, Amaker @ Michigan, Quin Snyder @ Mizzou, etc

Brey is really the only one who was successful post duke without failing horribly first... at least that I can think of.

Yeah I think it's time for loyalty to go to bed.

Colangelo really wanted Monty. Illinois didn't. Illinois did Colangelo and his buddy a favor by boosting his NBA stock today with Adrian Wojnarowski dropping that tweet 10 minutes after Groce being officially fired. Wojnarowski is the #1 NBA source for this stuff. I mean c'mon.... One of the highest paid coaches in college basketball and he's never coached at this level and so far is a failed NBA coach? Just a theory of course.

And the flight was cancelled along with the flights to PHX and Omaha. Weird

Was the last coaching hire thread the one that had over a million views? Or was it something else.

So I heard something in the past 90 minutes that I can't tell if I was being pranked or not. I was told that JW's top target is a very very successful P5 coach who's name I haven't seen (nor would have ever thought of being "available") listed as a potential hire.

I won't say who because I refuse to believe it's true.

I still think Jkat is our most reliable resource when it comes to forum posters with information. Would also love to see Lincoln add his $.02

Names people ... I need realistic names! I can't help but want to know who was contacting JW over the last few months. Just Monty's people or :eek:Others?

Also, someone tell me we have a realistic chance with Archie!!! ----JKat?

Why not Sergio. Great basketball player and background.

If you are serious, I will tell you why not. He has been bad at coaching basketball at both Parkland and Champaign Central. As in fired. He is not his dad.

Plus, we want a proven head coach at the D-1 level.
