I think it will be Monty Williams, that's my gut feeling

he would seem to be the betting favorite right now, but we have seen things change often in the 24-48-72 hours before the supposed announcement.

There are many reasons why a guy with Monty's background is appealing. There are also reasons why guys like Bennett and Marshall are appealing. I'm just hoping they really try (tried) hard to gauge interest out of those two in whatever way you can while their teams are still playing.

To hire Monty without ever having a discussion with the agent of those two current college head coaches would be a mistake, imo. But I am 100% behind the hiring of Monty regardless.

I just don't think JW wants to wait until UVa or WSU is out before hiring Monty. If the Monty thing doesn't pan out, I would look to Bryce Drew as the fall back option.

On the Monty thing, it is entirely possibly the current rumors and the Woj tweet can coexist and be true together. It is really quite simple. Discussions happened between JW and JC and he talked to Monty. Monty let that Woj scoop happen to judge interest from NBA GMs and owners on his availability. There wasn't the level of interest he hoped so he is open to a few years in Champaign at a high salary to boost his profile more and show his coaching skills. Then he jumps back to the NBA when they come calling with the right spot. Pop probably only has a few more years in him. There are a lot worse ways to spend 3-5 years than at a top college program making a veritable boatload of money.

On the list tweet, I have no doubt Archie and Monty are on the same level. It isn't a wait on one to move to the next situation. It is a whoever says yes first thing. Honestly you cannot go wrong with either of those two. Both are thought of as good coaches/developers and Archie has been recruiting the area and the thought is Monty can recruit at a high level/will have a dynamite staff. Both guys check all the boxes with limited risk.

On the plane tracker, even if they know people are watching the routes and tail numbers there is still a financial aspect to this. Khan basically lets them use the planes for free as a booster. Why would JW hire a different private charter when he has a plane available for his needs just to keep secrets? He has a responsibility to run an athletic department.

Going to OKC to try and get Anthony Grant onto Monty's staff?

I've kinda decided to give myself over to silly season here until I start hearing about guys like Wade and Musselman interviewing for other jobs. That's the panic point.

It's difficult to gauge interest from the NBA, given that season is still in progress.

I'm just impressed at the stealth JW has been able to operate at.

Look for it to be Archie Miller possibly finalized as soon as Monday 5-7 year contract. Bennett not leaving and I think they want a coach sooner rather than later which hurts Marshall but some rumors that he was not interested. I still think Marshall would be the leading candidate for Indiana if he wants it

Eh there is less than a month left in the season. As an owner/GM you know where your team is going to end up at this point. If you are on the outside looking in on the playoffs you are looking to next season already.

I'm just excited that we've essentially got the National Enquirer of Illini Nation and the New York Times of Illini Nation reporting completely opposite, seemingly mutually exclusive things. That's very unusual.
That's the strongest indication to me that nobody actually knows what's going on.

I think coach negotiations in the NBA start later. Monty has already been talked about as a coaching candidate in the NBA. I do not believe that an offer from Illinois, let alone a reported/non-confirmed offer, which reportedly he has turned down, has any effect of NBA GMs.

Whether Monty sees college as a career path is a different story. But it is a commitment, this is not a 1-year commitment, especially when recruiting is involved. If Monty wants NBA asap, whether that is this year or next, coaching at Illinois will not be the ideal path. JMO but I think coaching at UI is at least a 3 year commitment, independent of contract.

Yeah, if we get either Archie or Monty we should crash Loyalty with posts of excitement.

I think Keatts to NC State and Cuonzo to Missouri both make a lot of sense in terms of fit. JW has used that same word (fit) when discussing his decision making. It's no surprise that we're zeroing in on Williams and Miller. I also think Bennett and Drew are in that category of fit. Drew would be a step down only because he just hasn't been around as long as the others. There's a lot of Monty chatter and if it goes that way I'll be doing backflips. That sort of coaching pedigree and connections doesn't come around very often in a young coaching candidate. If he's hired and there is a large amount of negativity from the fan base I'll be baffled.
