We should crash the site in excitement if it's any of Archie, Monty, Bennett, Marshall, Buzz Williams, or either Drew. There might not be a Shaka or Brad Stevens in the candidate pool this year, but there are several potentially program changing coaches (rumored to be) on the market. Exciting times!

Agreed!

The list is exceptional. I favor Bryce Drew over Scott.

Keatts and Martin were pretty obvious a day after they were done with their seasons. If anyone really believes it's Archie the national guys will break it today.

Those guys were also officially official within minutes of the story breaking.

We can't announce anything until close of business Monday (apparently) at the earliest.

That's true those openings were open longer. I just won't believe the hype. I'm ready to be disappointed in Will Wade.

Rarely get inside information (feel free to dismiss) but do hear things through the grapevine at times:

Bennett, not Williams, was #1. Was lukewarm on the Illinois job but apparently Walker's position is a requirement due to recruiting retention. So Bennett is a hard and firm "no". No insights to Plans B or C but Miller and Marshall are preemptive "no's" due to Walker being a "must" on the coaching roster. Search moves down a tier in desired candidates. All I have, will likely hear more when the search is over.

Too general. I think it is still about the specific coach. NBA experience might get a coach in the door, but it won't close the deal IMO. Particularly if you are recruiting the top recruits.

Agree. But Monty is a guy parents would LOVE their sons to be mentored by. Better than Martin. Give him a college x and o offensive guy, Walker and another go getter on the recruiting trail and watch out!

See that is all very believable.

Just to clarify, do you mean that Whitman insisted on keeping walker and that Bennett was not interested in that? Seems a little crazy for Whitman to insist on that condition if Bennett were interested otherwise.

Also do you mean that Miller is a presumptive (?) no because he won't want Walker on his staff, despite the fact that they're reportedly friends?

Given that Walker is friends with Archie and would help him keep significant recruits, I doubt Archie would turn down the job because of Walker. I also do not think Whitman will "impose" Walker on the next candidate, if that meant getting a home run hire. More would "recommend" Walker and explain his rationale (recruits).

I had same reaction. Doesn't make much sense that Whitman would impose that requirement if these guys were indeed at top of list and he could otherwise get one of them. And also question whether Archie would object to having walker on staff.

Again, the assumption that the rookie AD who has never done this before couldn't possibly make mistakes.

That we would potentially give up on some of the top college coaches because we MUST retain an assistant that hasn't recruited one McDAA?

The guy has never made a hire of this magnitude. It is stressful. I think he's great but mistakes happen.

#4,447
That's not a mistake. Just something that would make no sense.

You've struck out with Monty, you've struck out with Marshall, you've struck out with Bennett, the Cuonzo thing happens and Tilmon's Mom is on the phone with you saying if she doesn't have a promise that Jamall Walker is on the next staff, she and her son are walking.

Don't act like this stuff is easy. The degree of difficulty here is a 15 out of 10.

JW has warring opinions from the boosters that he is accountable to regarding the search. Skepticism is fair and welcome as i don't think it makes sense. But this is still a program funded largely private donors and not all executive decisions make sense. I hope we are all happy in a few days, just passing along what I heat

It's by no means easy, but our AD isn't stupid enough to risk a home run hire like Bennett on 1 recruit.
