As we are trading college basketball madness stories this belongs in the top 5.

My wife and I are again going to Colorado and we are driving thru KC listening to a local station.

The top prospect in America was JaRon Rush of KC Pembroke, a heavy Roy Williams/Kansas lean.

JaRon had everything except at some time during early childhood his self evaluation gene had mutated and he honestly said this in an interview

"I love Kansas but I don't know if Roy is going to be able to give me enough minutes to keep me happy"

By the time we had reached Topeka, KU had announced that they were no longer recruiting him.

The madness, his son sits on Roy's bench at North Carolina

Ummm .... Brian Cook played in the CS8 on a Lincoln team that lost in the quarterfinals of the AA state tournament when there were only 2 divisions. The CS8 is one of the better high school conferences in Illinois. Ed Horton and Kevin Gamble; Andre Iquadala, McBride, Chukudebe -- I don't know anything about Bruninga, but there is no comparison between Cook's high school competition versus Bruninga's.

Sorry that spelling made me lol.

It is Iguodala.

It's been frustrating to say the least. All week long, they've been talking about Mark Smith down here and not one time has any of the sports writers mentioned Illinois a a finalist. Even though Smith did an interview where he mentioned Illinois first. They still pretended like he never said the name. I mean, he is Mr. Illinois basketball, has an in-home after the officials are over, yet Illinois isn't a finalist. LOL....someday, we'll get the respect again. :thumb:

Tampering with a signed recruit in the absence of a coaching change is the fastest way to guaranteed sanctions in college sports. With all due respect, anyone arguing that Tilmon would have been a subject of tampering if Groce stayed does not understand college recruiting.

And for anyone roasting me about attributing the loss of recruits to Groce's departure, I said we're probably better off with the coaching change. The point of my post was simply that the Illini didn't whiff on the down-state talent. We simply chose to change coaches.

I agree, before Groce was fired, this board was convinced that all recruits would stay, now many are trying to convince themselves that recruits would have left had he stayed.

Rather than artificially feeling good thinking that "things could have been worse," it is time for Illini basketball to create a present reality and give fans something to cheer about (such as new talented recruits coming our way, as well as wins on the court).

I believe JT would of still asked out of his LOI, had his mom not pushed him to sign it he never would of. Pickett on the other hand would still be signed if Groce was still here

You can believe whatever you want, again you can feel good convincing yourself that things could have been worse. But unless you are Tilmon or his mom, or have participated in those family conversations, you don't have much support for that hypothesis.

I am sorry fellas but, MSmith has not showed me anything at this classic. I would take TFrazier over Smith any day. Trent has heart and bleeds orange and blue. He has always been the first one to confirm his loyalty to UI. Not just playing us for the best team available.

Luckily for you, that's not a choice you have to make! We already have Frazier in the bag and Smith would just be icing on the cake if we landed him.

Creighton is in on some highly ranked players. What's going on there?

They are now the favorite for Bowen, I believe. Leaving the Valley for the Big East helps a lot.

There's no reason to be spiteful toward someone who hasn't even decided where he is playing yet. Yes, we should trust BU, and he is still recruiting Mark Smith (in-home coming). Therefore, he obviously wants him to be a part of this program. Relax, let the process play out.

Exactly. If he was committed here we would be talking about how all star games don't matter

I think part of Smith's somewhat lackluster showing was that he was actually trying to play team ball instead of "how many shots can I chuck up.". I think he threw more passes himself than the rest of his team did combined. And of course never got the ball back. Would have liked to see him take the ball up the court and drive a couple.of times. He did show some.pretty good ups in a couple of rebounding battles.

This is context, with a better understanding of the game.

Not to pile on the OP, but don't first post on this forum and misspell Buddha.

Exactly. He will flourish in a solid team concept, and hopefully it is with the UI.
