Ha.. no Mark Smith

Here's the comment:

Been long time follower, Love My Bucks. Have a little interest following Illini as live 15 miles from campus. For some info on Mark Smith. Gonna be a tough pull For Coach Matta and staff. We don't have the stature of UK or Duke but the Illini have a little pull. His uncle works for AD Whittman. Don't know if that means anything but sure it doesn't help any"

100% guarantee that if he visits OSU he is not coming to Illinois. No question

If he was sold on Illinois he wouldn't need to take another visit. I feel like if he was confident with Illinois there would be no need in taking the visit to OSU. Just my opinion. This is also coming from someone who has been skeptical of him coming here all along.

By this logic the only school he will sign with since he didn't commit on any of his previous visits. :tsk:

I'm pretty sure the OP was jokingly saying Lovie Smith was Mark Smith's uncle.

None since Luther Head is paying for them all to come here

Don't forget big bro Mike Will covert to a walk on so Tim can realize his dream of playing for Illinois on scholarship :D

Disclaimer : I know it cannot happen, it is just a running joke on this board.

Let's hope recruiting will truly turn the force in a good way

This isn't junior prom where the girl turned you down and you pout. It's a multi-million dollar business where acquiring talent is everything. If Tilmon comes back and says he thought it over and he wants to play at Illinois - you take that commitment and smile. I guarantee you the staff has been nothing but professional with Tilmon and his family

Professional? Yes

Actively pursueing? No

Given up on the kid? Absolutely

In the same way we should be keeping an eye on Charlie Moore.

Think he needs to wait , seems all focus is on MS atm, and fact we made offer to Baddicho earlier. That would be 2 scholly gone if we get commits. Think coach might be seeing how this all plays out, before we make next move. We get MS to commit , dominos might start falling in line. Don't care how they have ranked Mark, alot rides on him to set tone. 6'4 225 ? Mark is big ten ready, Trent is all fired up to play with him . Flying Illini 2.0 ? Hell yeah.

Here's my time to shine as an insider! Was at Watson's for dinner tonight and was seated at a table right next to BU and Chin Coleman! They were hanging out with what looked like BU's kids and someone else. Anyway BU kept getting up from the table to take phone calls and when we were leaving was out front tucked into a corner in a pretty intense seeming phone call....Wonder what it was about?

I agree with this line of thinking.

While I do not think it actually will happen, but if it did, that would be a huge win on many levels. It would mean Tilmon explored his options and BU and staff were able to seal the deal. Big win.

Conversely, I don't think the staff really will have an opportunity to make another pitch.

I figured as much... Regardless, it would be quite intriguing if MS's uncle was in fact working in the AD's office. Not sure how much weight we can put on Hellfighter's post on an OSU board, but if true, definitely can't hurt our chances.

If you've been recruiting the kid since 8th grade and he flips on you at the last second, would you keep crossing your fingers?

No you wouldn't... and neither would/is Jamall Walker

If I were an Ohio State fan I would regard the idea of Smith committing there as totally ludicrous and a waste of time.

I mean, I know you personally want to strive for some Moneyball-esque version of recruiting where resource inefficiencies are identified and ruthlessly destroyed, but it's just not a waste of time to get a talented kid on campus this late in the game. Kids are fickle. Stuff happens.

Wait seriously? Can you give one reason why you think we would turn him down that isn't BU would massively risk his job over spite?

On top of this, I think we are basically all overestimating how offended BU likely was by the decommitment. There was a coaching change, and these coaches know that recruits have a decent shot of backing out when the situation changes like that, plus, BU hadn't been recruiting him previously anyway, so it's not like there would be hard feelings there. Now, would Walker have some hard feelings? Maybe.

Tilmon who?

Seriously, I don't remember the last time his name was mentioned on this thread. I don't remember, however, was his release granted and accepted and whatever so that there's no obligation whatsoever between the two parties?

If so, he's history, and I don't think there's a spot for him on the team by the time he could reconsider. He's burned that bridge. Not only has the SS Tilmon sailed for Illinois, the SS Illini has sailed for Tilmon.

At least this thread seems to have no interest in him. And I don't see Underwood carrying a torch.

There's a spot for a consensus too 40 big man on every team in America. Illinois is certainly no exception with Finke being our projected center as of now. I know this board are sick of the Tilmon saga but there's no acceptable reason why BU shouldn't still be recruiting Tilmon unless he's already met with him post NLOI release and gauged we have no shot with him. Tilmon makes this team considerably better next year.

Same could be said after his MSU visit, no? Why go to Champaign if he has his mind set on the Spartans.

Maybe he and his family want to see everyone and make all visits. Give everyone a fair shot.

That's understandable, no?

He told staff he didn't wanna visit OSU. He gave a silent verbal to Underwood. His OSU visit was cancelled. His OSU visit is back on. MSU wants another in home visit next week.

I have all the rumors covered?

One thing that we do have going for us is the timing of all this. Smith seemingly will be making a decision very soon which means we'll either have Smith or can put the full court press on Moore. We're avoiding the situation we may or may not have been in with Brunson/Evans where one felt slighted.

I used to work in IT Recruiting. I always told my candidates to keep their options open and cast a wide net.

Go through the process and take all the interviews, even if you realllllly like a company and think you wanna go there.

No harm in taking one or two more visits. That'll either confirm your original feeling or the variables change. Either way there's no downside in having multiple offers. Just make sure you have all the info before you make a decision.

That's what I see with the OSU visit. Who knows. Maybe the blow him away. Or, maybe it confirmed his original thought process.

Either way, he should go to Columbus. Wasn't Matta in on him early too? Maybe a sign of loyalty to give him a visit as well?

The Tilmon saga is over and I for one am happy about it. Believe what you want but we have gotten off of the rollercoaster and have moved on.

We did everything we could possibly do. Let him go to Mizzou and let's get ready for bragging rights
