It's commitment day, and we've discussed some food and what could have happened to help the Illini win their first title...I'd say we are right on schedule.

Still, a block out by Nick (Great Illini player and I know it haunts him to this day) and we win that game and our first NC. That was the National Title game because we would have crushed Seton Hall.

Still the hardest "sports" loss for me to accept in my lifetime. The greatest Illini team to ever step foot on the court. I've suffered some tough losses as a sports fan of professional (White Sox, Packers, Blackhawks, etc.) and Illini teams, but that one stung, and will always sting, the most.

It hurt me badly as well, but I am not sure worse than 05 because the way the game was stolen from us by the UNcheat refs.

I remember Lou Henson once saying that in decades of coaching he never once got a recruit that he didn't know the decision at least a day in advance. Our staff knows what is going to happen this evening. This may explain the Charlie Moore decision to go to Kansas.

Tate's source for the Smith story is probably someone who is drawing a UI paycheck as a coach.

Completely agree with you and I had the misfortune of watching the game in Michigan decked out in my finest orange and blue. Brutal.

The point of referencing the 1989 FLYIN' ILLINI team is that Mark Smith is coming out of high school as a young version of the combination of Bardo and Gill in terms of his quality family background, size and athleticism and basketball IQ. Once he gets coached up by Underwood and plays against Big Ten guards for a season or two, I believe he has potential to reach the Bardo/Gill level, which for me is high praise, indeed. SO much to look forward to for once!

It indicates that some reporting and sourcing exists, at the very least. I mean, what are we to infer from it as currently stated? That Tilmon told Loren this directly? That it's just commonly known information? Nobody knows, because he's giving zero evidence as to how he came by that information. Change the words "privately committed" to "accepted cash to attend" and see how it reads.

You're of course correct here, and anonymous sourcing is a vital part of journalism in a way it can't or shouldn't be in other fields (even it has arguably gotten out of hand, which is a discussion for another time).

I was a journalist back in the day and although my stories were not the type that needed anonymous sources, I knew many reporters who did stories that used them. At that time there were many checks and balances, editors had to sign off and if not know who the sources were, the reporters had to be willing to give them names if it came to that, but usually they did beforehand. You also usually had to get a second source saying the same thing unless you really really trusted or had used the first source before. Sometimes you had to go all the way up to the publisher. But anonymous sources are the lifeblood of good journalism. You can't burn them because you'll never get another one if you do.
Never worked in a sports department so I have no idea how that works. I did find Tate's article a little strange but what I see online these days makes me think a lot of the old checks are no longer in operation. Not saying that's the case here but in general.

I am optimistic on MS announcement today. Cautiously optimistic. Not wearing my cup but keeping it close by.

I don't think you set an announcement date to force yourself to come to a decision. He's known for at least two days.

I have lived through the Taylor Bell's column of Magette committing to Illinois. If anybody can find that back page of the Sun-Times please post it.

I think in BU offense Smith can have a nice PPG immediately and run a dynamic offense. At MSU I believe he will be deeper in the depth chart and score much less.

I hope he choose Illinois, just have lived through to many nutt punches. I'm just waiting for somebody to post Spartan cupcakes at Edwardsville.

I can't focus at work. I just keep looking at the clock.

Guess it's not much different than any other work day...:p

Tilmon to Mizzou?

If it's a foregone conclusion by everyone that Tilmon is headed to Mizzou (according to all of the crystal balls and Tate), then what is keeping Tilmon from committing? Is there a dependency (e.g, someone else committing first, open scholarship slot, etc.)? Just confused and curious.

Doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose of the apparatus? I mean if its "close by" won't the damage have been done?

This is based on no actual intel, but my personal assumption is that Conzou told him to just sit on it for awhile to avoid any appearance of tampering. The longer he waits the less likely it appears that Mizzou was involved with him while he was still signed here. Like I said just a guess, but I think its much more likely than the theory that he's still considering Illinois.

I also remember when the Sun-Times headlined Walter Downing to Marquette the morning he announced for DePaul. I suspect he was planning on Marquette to the last minute because after two years at DePaul he transferred to Marquette and had a much better career there.

of all the 89 guys MS reminds me the most of Nick, yes he has a ways to go to get to that level but, its just who I see more then gill or bardo or a combo of the 2

Regarding the Tate column, he talked about this yesterday on Sports Talk on WDWS - just listen to the podcast. It seems pretty clear that his source is on the coaching staff. He thinks the info he has is as good as he's ever had.

He's definitely a polarizing figure, but he's forgotten more about Illinois sports than anybody on this board will ever know. FWIW, I think he's much better on the radio than in his columns. People should hope to be as sharp as he is when they're in their 80s.
