Another ISU player is leaving. 6 ft. 6 inch guard DJ Clayton will be given is his release to transfer. Spent one season with ISU

My goodness, that program has gone from a promising mid-major to a mess real quick. McIntosh and Clayton were the Redbirds 2 best players. They will struggle big time next year even in the abysmally weak MVC.

Wow, if Alstork comes here we're going to have a super-small and really fast-paced guard-led team next year. Would be fantastic to have an athletic Center in the middle who can swat away shots and also run the court!

Don't worry, he is not coming to Illinois. He wants to win at a Power 5 school and we are 2-3 years from being competitive.

Yeah because it took Underwood about that long to make SFA and OSU competitive.

Figured this is noteworthy, half of the schools on Alstork's final list have new coaches.

Looney tunes. By the time the finishing touches are added to the roster and the team gels with this new offensive system, we are going to have an exciting team that will be able to keep up with anybody.

We will ooze orange&blue competitive goo :chief:

Alstork potentially gives us:

1) experienced, older guard.
2) positionless player
3) good shooter
4) positional height as a potential lead ball-handler
5) good athleticism
6) a guard who can/likes to post
7) a guard who can play P/R
8) an extra schollie for '18

Didn't have time earlier, now I do, so I thought I would give references to the three transfers I mentioned earlier. Not that it matters very much. But the article on Clayton may be of passing interest:

Former St. John's transfer Malik Ellison committed to Pitt

No, we are not. Add Smith, this kid, a big to go with the rest of the roster and we will win this coming year.

He is obviously a talented player but whose spot does he take? JCL's? The kid is going to expect to start and play big minutes wherever he goes so I am just wondering can we offer him that and if so what does it do to a JCL or one of the young guys who will be giving up playing time?

I am not saying we don't want him but to me a bigger need from this transfer class is a center and wings (6'6-6'8 guys who can hit boards but are athletic and can score in this offense).

It's still possible we could have a player transfer out.

You stack good players on good players and the lineup will sort itself out. As it stands, we will have three freshmen, a sophomore, and a junior at the guard spots. Jordan and DJ will have to improve a ton to be factors. So, you could have

G JCL, Da Williams
G Alstork, Frazier
G Smith, Lucas

Damonte is still recovering so he may not be ready. That would be five players at three spots. Definitely not too many, and they would all be in the rotation.

Alstork traveling show ends on 5/17. Be nice to see what comes out then, not we really need him but his experience would be awesome.

Marin Maric from NIU? Did he transfer anywhere yet? Hes tall enough for me. I would be happy with him(If he's a one year rental that is).

I spoke with one of Marin's teammates a few weeks ago and he told me he has yet to officially announce that he is going to be a grad transfer.

Marin wants to test the waters and offers of some of the pro Leagues in Eastern Europe (he's from Croatia) first.

What's interesting is that he went to La Lumiere (think JCL) for high school so maybe that could benefit? He would bring immediate help to the team but I doubt he decides to take a 5th year. We'll see.

Combes is correct as usual.

Alstork would be a great pickup but can we get any bigs on campus?

I think a jcl/alstork/tjl starting lineup is great. Smith will start on bench and see if he can out compete any of the 3 with his development

I don't know why, but I think the great Mark Smith will be starting some kind of way. I actually want Frazier to start as well. But what I keep saying is that they need bigs.. THEY NEED BIGS.. I honestly don't want another commitment from anyone under 6'9. They need a young big for the future and a fifth year big that's going to be gone in a year. They need 2 scholarships for 18. As much as I love THT and Ayo, I don't think you can take both of them without some type of attrition. If you take both of them and the roster is the way it is now, we talking about THT being your backup big as a freshman.

Thanks for sharing. It's hard to find the latest on him.

Thank you good Sir. Mr insider sir. That's probably a good idea for him. I did notice he was from Croatia as well and that made my eyes get big. I liked his videos as well. Looks like I will just knock on (under)wood for him to transfer here.

I was disappointed when I heard about it but you can't knock the kid for wanting to make $ and be closer to family.

The original idea of him being a grad transfer was simply that... an idea (then the rumors spread). But who knows what Underwood can do. We'll see.

Unless JCL has a miraculous change in ability to dribble, play defense, shoot, etc...I just don't see him in the starting line up. He really disappointed me this past season and my money is on the freshman beating him out of a starting spot.

With JCLs ability to come in and light it up in bunches, coming off the bench as a 6th man is not the worst thing. I almost think it would be good for us to be able to bring someone with that punch off the bench.

For what it is worth, probably not much, I think you are wrong.

I think the debate about who starts and who comes off the bench is vastly overblown. It's fun to consider what a starting 5 looks like, but in fact it's pretty irrelevant. The real question is who shares time on the court and how much time do guys get.

It will be very interesting to see how guys play side by side. But I really like the pieces that BU can put out there from a guard/wing perspective. Lots of ways to experiment with:

JCL
TJL
Smith
Frazier
Kipper
DJW

Add in a transfer like Alstork and a healthy DeMonte...well that's icing on the cake.
