It's hard for me to believe this FBI investigation won't have an impact of some kind on Underwood's ability to recruit. Think if you're in Castleton or Nolley's position. Go To Michigan or Illinois (considering Underwood has a chance of getting into trouble)/ Virginia Tech or Illinois? To me, as a recruit, if you're having a hard time deciding between the two, the chance of something happening to Underwood is enough to sway you elsewhere.

Small positive, we will probably know one way or the other pretty quickly if anything is going to happen.

Also, all the other schools mentioned were accused of paying for recruits, evens was accused of directing players to finacial advisors so I don't really believe that tweet

We'll know the impact, if Chase Adams schedules an OV.

It will certainly be used against him.

There must be rules, and crooks will be crooks. Someone will figure out a way to make money off of them. The perfect is the enemy of the good, because perfect can never be achieved. The point is that today's system may not be perfect, but it might be better than proposals to keep those rules from being broken: The Law of Unintended Circumstances comes into play.

After all, you don't solve some problems (Penn State...) by changing the rules to make the infraction legal. You keep the rules and do your best to enforce them. They'll still be broken. You just have to do your best to enforce the rules, and punish those who break them.

Couldn't disagree more. Baseball has a system that allows players to be drafted, explore their value, and leave or stay based on the contract. Basketball could be much friendlier to athletes. The problem is the incredible lengths the NCAA goes to to keep all the money or even let athletes figure out their value above board.

To put this nonsensical system entirely on the people trying to get their share is IMO, giving a corrupt organization a free pass.

Further down in the replies to his tweet, he adds that he guesses we'll hear "close to 50% of Power 5 coaches." I don't think he has anything on Underwood, in particular. He's probably just preemptively connecting the dots.

It's hard to see us overcoming the negative perception. We haven't won at Illinois in too long. Underwood had enough questions circling him prior to this investigation. Of course the investigation couldn't have happened at a worse time. It would've been nice if we had already wrapped up the class of 2018 and had their signature signed on the dotted line.

Not sure that is correct...

"According to court documents, Evans is also charged with wire fraud conspiracy for participating in a scheme to facilitate and conceal bribe payments to prospective and current student-athletes and/or their families. Those athletes would have been ineligible to compete because of the payments."

yeah, here's the actual tweet.

Schools that are likely to be hit next, according to sources: Auburn, Arizona, Alabama - and Illinois' Brad Underwood

One of those sources is the OSU message board.

The trick with the athletes getting paid is that it won't be able to pass Title IX muster IMO. How long before the women players expect to be paid in the same manner and get a court to back them. Since there is federal $ involved in all the public universities, they will have a hard time keeping the money for only the big $ revenue sports. It will rapidly become a scenario where mid size schools either start dropping sports or fall back to some kind of a Division 1AA status.

Good point! Also, if there is no salary cap, then the small schools won't get talent. If there is a salary cap, there will be "additional" monies going around and we are where we are today, but now the mid-lower tier players are getting money too.

It only makes sense that Illinois, a school that hasn't had a 5* recruit in almost 15 years if my memory serves me correctly, would be drug into a scandal involving payments to top tier high school recruits.
I know that's not the entirety, or even the main focus, of the FBI's investigation, but still....

I saw an article on Tuesday - which I can't find now since I read so many that day, but I think it was in USA Today- that said scores of coaches would be involved in this before they were done. Just with Underwood's ties to Evans, hiring Antiqua and his long spell with Martin, who's been known to be somewhat loose with the rules, I would expect him to be at least heavily investigated. If another B1G team had hired him and the stuff we know already had come out we'd be pointing fingers at them in a second.

How about salary caps for coaches? Maybe not so off topic.

LOL, was just about to say this ... anyone actually any more worried after that tweet than you were before??

Nope. I wouldn't call that a legitimate source. Plus, the way he worded it... um Brad Underwood isn't a school. He most likely is just throwing crap out there because Underwood hired Evans at OSU

I think that's a red herring. If the athlete's get paid, it won't be by schools, which will stick to tuition, room & board. Anything past that will be because their market value allows them to be paid professionally, or paid professionally at a later date. The NCAA just needs to get out of the way.

I've accepted that Underwood is going to get investigated at some point. And will probably get some type of sanctions by the NCAA. My only hope is that it is just "lack of institutional control" and that the sanctions are just a few games.
