Well I have 4 years of eligibility left. Maybe there is a spot for me on the team. No one else wants to play here.

Pretty sad. I'm getting to the point it really doesn't matter anymore.

I think that's a tad bit melodramatic considering this staff hasn't even coached a game yet.

That said....especially if we lose Ayo (which sadly I think we will), I think there are valid concerns about our recruiting going forward. Clearly the sample size is still small, but when you bring in an elite recruiter like Antigua and a Mac Irvin guy in Chin Coleman, the whole idea is that it's supposed to generate a lot of recruiting buzz. Hopefully the Coleman connection pays off with Ayo. If it doesn't, we're going to have to get back to relevance the old fashioned way -- win first, and hope the recruits jump aboard later.

Connections can really help in getting schools a foot in the door and leg up in recruiting but when it comes to crunch time, you've still got to sell your program & vision to get the commitment. Ayo is not going to come to Illinois simply because the school has a family friend and former leader of Mac Irvin Fire. He's going to want more than that so BU & co have to sell him & all the other remaining recruits on what he can do for the team and for the potential future players.

Right now, either recruits (1) aren't willing to take a leap of faith yet, (2) the coaches aren't selling the program that well/aren't good recruiters, or (3) simply established coaches & schools have established success/progress versus here.

1 & 3. No way to fix this really. Maybe the coaches can sell harder but realistically just need to have some progress to show moving forward.
2. I don't think this is the problem, but in the remote case that this is why numerous recruits have gone elsewhere, it is concerning. But this possibility is not worth exploring any further unless more info comes out pointing to this.

This board is the best at being consistently wrong I have ever seen

I tell ya......going back to the infamous DJax "lock" with BrooksTaylorFan, the faith placed in "insiders" and the blindly optimistic interpretations of tweets has been utterly fascinating to watch.

And to whoever said that this Ohio State guy might be trolling us......wouldn't doubt it. Illinois fans, unfortunately, have developed a reputation for being utter children on social media when it comes to this stuff. What better way to rile up the fan base for entertainment value than by providing false hope only to watch it all melt away?

But hey......only have yourself to blame if you take the bait.

In a competitive sport there is nothing wrong with looking at the competition and seeing how things are going. Look at the other school in the conference or other schools with new coaches or whatever category you want to use. They are doing fine with recruiting and getting commitments. We've wasted time and energy and resources and come up with absolutely nothing. No one. I think finding hope is ok but call this recruiting class what it is so far...a big nothing.

OSU gets people to play there.

Damn that hurts, was very much my second favorite guy we were in on. However, things seem to have been trending that way lately so this doesn't come as a surprise.

The positive is that we have a staff who should be one of the best in the B1G in terms of actual coaching and system. It always takes longer than we want to get the results and players but I have a lot of confidence in the staff that the should be able to put together a product that recruits want to play for. As of now, it's selling them on a dream to join a team that nationally isn't considered very highly right now

The only guy I wanted is still on the board. But it certainly makes us less attractive.

That was my biggest concern about losing Nolley. It creates the perception that everybody is telling us no for whatever reason, and having an empty class isn't particularly attractive to a kid who probably wants to step in and be part of a big time class.

Who knows. We'll see how strong this Chin Coleman connection proves. I mean, when he was hired, we all talked about how he was hired with Ayo in mind.

What I like about being an Illinois fan is that things always seem so familiar.

Board freak out and this staff is overpaid discussion starts in 3.....2.....1....

Personally I'm good. Looking forward to the season and years to come

I think the both responses are valid responses. It is difficult to put a class together when you haven't coached a game. It's even tougher when a couple of your main targets are out of state kids with no previous ties to the University. So, it's completely reasonable to hold off on hitting the panic button.

On the other hand, IF they were to miss on Ayo, the 2018 recruiting season is a failure. When it's a feasible possibility that Iowa State can come in a swipe three of your top targets.....that is not a good sign. When you've been eliminated by Georgia and VT, not a good sign. These aren't blue bloods that are taking these guys. The alarm should definitely be sounding, but again....still a month before signing day.

The only card that they have right now is the, haven't seen them play card. I'm leaning more in that direction because it's the fair thing to do . If they come up with zero to one commitment, and that commitment being a third or fourth option guy... Not good.

Also, yes, they landed Smith. The question has to be asked, if he blew up as a sophomore and he had two full recruiting cycles to go through.....does that turn out well? He's also a downstate kid and if you can't tie him up with the PT available.....then I'd have hit the panic button.

We'll see. The staff hasn't proven a thing yet. Hopefully things change and change soon
