Yeah it's very physical, very fast, pressuring the ball, cutting down passing lanes... I'm excited!

Bigger, more physical guards, with good burst & agility should exceed supremely well forsure in this defense! ️️

I remember when D-Will came here, and he had a lot of hype from certain guys --not just because he was top-50 (roughly), but also because they loved his size, killer instinct, PG skills, etc. I told myself, he's still gonna make freshman mistakes. And he did.

I guess all I'm trying to say is these guys are not D-Will, there are a lot of freshmen/new faces, and each of them is gonna make their share of mistakes. We're on the ground floor, but it should be exciting to see a team on the rise. If you can enjoy the process, this could be a fantastic season, assuming we're back in the dance, and holding our own in conference. If you're expecting us to contend for the conference title, you might be in for disappointment. I really don't expect us to catch up to the leaders in one off-season.
i am just looking forward to decent in-game adjustments and for players to play all 40 minutes and get better through the year to set table for next year. I think most of the pre-season polls are factoring in loss of MH and MM...significant losses.

I would like to see .500 in B10 but that may be stretch.

So, sorry for my randomness. Just an excited Illini fan for the first time in a long time. What are the real realistic expectations this year with a young team learning a new system? Then what are the realistic expectations next year with Ayo, and a sophomore smith/Frazier/Williams and Sr-Finke/Black

Am I crazy thinking top 4 in big ten next year and top 25 most of year? Tournament this year? Just want some thoughts and opinions so I know what to feel more before I make crazy predictions to my Indiana friends lmao

I know a lot of talk is about the spread offense that Coach Underwood runs but Illini Nation hasn't seen the style of defense that the Illini will play this year. They are still in the learning stage in practice but once they figure it out..... and Damonte is a beast playing this defense.

I don't think the defense is talked about much because that will probably be our weakness. Playing multiple freshmen, having no shot blocking C, and learning a new system is a bad recipe for a successful defense. It also seems like this defense is tough to learn. SFA was bad defensively in BU's first year but improved each year. Here are the numbers according to Kenpom's adjD:

12-13: 10 (the year prior to BU)
13-14: 105
14-15: 98
15-16: 38

And Oklahoma St:
15-16: 58 (pre BU)
16-17: 155

The huge drop in adjD in BU's first season with both schools is pretty telling. Maybe Fivestar can tell us how tough/complicated his D is to run and why we might have some troubles this year.

Just in case the foregoing is not depressing enough... Mizzou led Kansas at the half, and this:

Shape that Mizzou staff has gotten freshman Jeremiah Tilmon into and motor he’s playing with is much different than last year of high school

Bossi giving a rundown of Kansas-Missouri exhibition game on his twitter feed.

Great atmosphere for a scrimmage. This is only a glimpse of what the Braggin' Rights game will be like. If both teams have good starts to the season and build the hype even more then this year might be the best atmosphere ever. Illini fans will need to come out in full force, because Mizzou fans proved today that they will.

In my opinion the biggest problem that Tilmon will run into is foul problems. I watched him foul out multiple times last year. Mizzou has definitely gotten a huge talent upgrade at pretty much every position. This exhibition against Kansas is showing that. My problem is that I can't decide who I want to lose this game more, Bill Self or Missouri?

Has anyone heard about how our scrimmage against Indiana St. went today?

I think you are one year off. What would we do on here without weekly meltdowns?

I'm not worried about Mizzo just yet.....getting consistency from the young players is going to be big....but did the veterans look impressive...

I'm with you cardillinifan how did we look today even if it wasn't a real scrimmage did we look "dominate"

Hope they call over the back in the regular season. At least when we're playing them/him.

Somewhere in a previous post I broke it down a bit. I think the tldr version would read, not hard to learn mentally, but very hard to execute physically.

Makes sense. I would assume having an athletic big who can protect the rim is even more important in this defense than any other. Pressure D means you are more susceptible to giving up shots at the rim.

Maybe he read the comments here and adjusted accordingly. :D

No more pack line defense. This team is going to pressure the ball hard and look for traps. (One pass away) player is going to deny the passing lane. Just cant get back cut. Rotations have to be there or easy baskets will happen. On ballscreens they don't want the ball reversed or else easy weak side corner shots will be open all game. Tejon and Damonte are ahead of the others right now in playing this style.

DaMonte seems to be making up ground for lost time.....actually from your report he is the freshman to be watching moving pass Smith and Frazier ....

Defense will be key for this style of play
