State Farm Center Renovation

Personally, I'm a little annoyed at the dead space in the Orange Krush/Band seating area. We all thought they'd get this figured out in the offseason and we still have a row of Orange seats in the band area that look awkwardly empty every game. It appears they tried to cover some of them with some sort of banner? But it only covers half of them.. pretty tacky looking for an otherwise beautiful facility. I wouldn't mind if it wasn't so close to the floor and always on TV.

Also, this whole "madison square garden" lighting effect I hear they're going for is not my cup of tea. I thought the whole point of the new lighting was to brighten the arena? Instead, it's no even darker on TV. You can't see anything above the orange krush from your couch, which is disappointing.

If they figured out how to fix the above two issues, I'll be a happy camper

Is the game going on above the OK? I always thought it was dumb to show anything above there anyway. What does Value city, the United Center or Breslin look like above row 15? I wouldn't have a clue, nor would I care. Highlight the floor. That is where the action is. Make it as good as possible for TV. The people that pay the money to be sitting at the arena can see the other areas. Those of us at home can see what is important. :thumb:

I guess I should re-phrase, it isn't that I care to see other parts of the arena during gameplay, but it's nice get a clearly lit view of it when the camera pans away to different angles. I wish I had screen shots to show you, but when they go to different angles for out of bounds plays and the like, it just looks like there's some orange around the floor and a black abyss beyond that.

Plus, I just thought that the lights were supposed to brighten the floor and the arena in general. I get "highlight the floor". But the floor doesn't even look bright compared to most other arenas when watching on tv. I'm not the only one who has made this complaint. Just bizarre that it still looks so dark on TV.

Not sure they want to have a good view of empty seats. Lighting may improve when the crowds get bigger.

I think the main problem there is the aperture of the cameras. The floor is actually bright so the cameras are set for it, not for the view looking up.

The way you described it made me think of this video game from back in the day.

I believe the single row of orange seats between the upper and lower band is a function of how those seats "fold up". They fold up to allow more space for the band to be on the floor (below the seats). If you look close, there is no floor under those seats. No one can sit in them when they are folded up. As such, I don't believe it is "wasted space" but does look odd. Covering them up was a good idea. Maybe they should cover the rest.

I have mentioned this before, but the band area STILL looks like an afterthought. They deserve better, and the arena (both in person and on TV) deserves better.

The way those seats fold look so cheap. There has to be an easy way to give the band a great space and still make good use of that area. Right now, it is by far the least professional looking component to an otherwise good seating bowl.

My thoughts exactly. Also wish they would put some sort of tunnel covers over both of the new entrances in the corners. Would help alleviate the "dead space" look on TV. Instead of Krush being one unit surrounding the court, they appear to be 3 isolated student sections

Suggest emailing these suggestions to an appropriate point of contact so they can be reviewed and considered.

Can someone post photos from around the center. Not just the court. I'm all the way in North Carolina for med school so it's a little tough to make it there myself ; )

I'll take a bunch of normal fan experience photos on Monday... yeah that's right. Happy birthday to me!

Sate Farm Center looked great for the grand opening celebration tonight. The Illini got a big win over North Carolina State. #illini

I know there is probably SOMETHING we did wrong (and with our fan base, some of us will find something to complain about with JUST about everything ;)), but I really wanted this renovation to spruce up State Farm Center to dazzle recruits and young fans while maintaining the uniquely imposing structure and setup of Assembly Hall (when we were good and that place was painted orange, the place looked vast and terrifying from the court, if you were an opposing player).

I think we hit a homerun in that regard.

I agree. It's really sad that we can't even fill the Orange Krush anymore (Krush section next to band hasn't had any students in it all year). But I do think when you combine technological advances, amenities, historical significance, architecture.. you have one of the finest facilities in the nation. Can't wait for the day that the actual bball product is back.

Also, where are the banners? Looks like they still don't have anything hanging from the rafters. Is this going to change once the side sky video boards are installed?

After the OSU game I meant to write and say that I think SFC is one of the top facilities in the USA in which to witness a basketball game. It's just so impressive inside, you can not only see the game but almost every single other fan there too. At minimum, as far as the in-seat in-game experience goes the renovation was absolutely a homerun in my eyes. Now we just need to get to having a top-flight, ranked Illini team in there.

Went to the NKU game earlier this season and took my father for his very first live Illini game. I know it was early and everything was not in the rafters, but we both pointed out from our section (120) we could not see the USA flag, it was on the other side of the videoboard. Our suggestion would be to put a USA flag on both sides of the main videoboard.

So, to bring up something that isn't coaching or bracket related... this needs to be a point of emphasis in the offseason. Look behind Malcolm at the band section.

I have been harping on this, but they are definitely not using that area very efficiently. I'm not saying that they don't deserve all the space, just figure something out so that they look more efficient. That is prime property on the floor that needs to be built out better.

It was my understanding that when the band isn't there more seats could be put in front of that last row of orange seats that hangs in front. Like for concerts or other events...

Yes, of course. But when the band is there, I have to imagine there is a better way to allocate that space and cover those exposed orange seats. $150 million, I think we can have a custom band riser to make the lower bowl look more professional.
