Ohio State 75, Illinois 67 POSTGAME

I'm not one to focus solely on the final score and ignore everything else, but a loss is a loss is a loss.

Fact is, our talent needs an upgrade to compete for an NCAA tournament. And a MAJOR upgrade to be a real contender in the conference.

Not when you're rebuilding.

On Twitter Derek Piper said our previous 8 road games against ranked opponents were lost by an average of 21 pts. We're getting better and we're right on the cusp.

Shoot all 3pts, turn the ball over and don't make fts is how you go long periods without scoring. We make some stupid fouls too. Alstork 40 ft from the basket. Blacks foul because Frazier doesn't let him get set for the pick. Were just 2 of many. Plus we get calls because we have a reputation and also we are in the road. Road officiating sucks in the big ten.

I know it’s the way the game is called but, some of these illegal screen calls and offensive foul calls seem over the top to me. The defenders’ reaction (acting?) to even the slightest contact is so exaggerated to draw a call it is ridiculous. Sometimes reacting to no contact at all. Makes the game hard to watch imo.

Another heartbreaker, but I love the fight we show. Our young guys have been in tough spots this year against older basketball players that have been there before. A couple years from now the tides going to turn when we have a bunch of pesky guards that do the little things right for 40 minutes.

Still an attitude issue between teammates, I would be furious if I was Underwood. Mark Smith should get more playing time. Trent Frazier is incredible.

I think Smith has been frozen out at times. Today Alstork had him for a layup and took it himself. Alstork is a good defender, but commits at least one over aggressive foul per game. It usually happens at the worst time.

Yeah I can't quite remember either.

Bardo tries so hard to be unbiased when doing Illinois games that he over corrects himself and appears to favor the other team or be unnecessarily critical of the Illini. He's spoken before about how it's his job as a professional to be objective, which I agree with, but he could play up his UI roots a little more than he does without coming off as a homer.

BU on radio now...

missed fts and senseless fouls...
Alstork is best defender, but makes silly fouls @ half court
we are playing well...just need to finish
we can beat anybody but mistakes holding us back
we need TF, LB and KN ON THE COURT, not the bench

IMHO, we are the most hot and cold Illini team in memory

red hot = Illini ahead 30-15
ice cold = OSU ahead 34-30

the need for a powerful post presence is the most glaring deficient on this yrs team....only losing MA and gaining Ayo and hopefully some wide bodies will result in a very different W-L record compared to this season

Do you not think trent got enough shots/touches? he went 5-15....

If he is 5-15 or 10-15, honestly, who do you feel better when the ball leaves their hand? This season is all about the future at this point, TF needs all the shots and then some, Dee potential in him.

Two years from now, could be the best PG in league with hopefully much deeper roster.

I don't think that is true at all. We have plenty of talent, we just don't have any bigs. Get a couple bigs and we're in. Arguably, a few plays here and there and we could be in without any bigs.

I know everyone keeps pointing to how close we've been, but the reason why we seem to be unable to make those "few more plays here and there" are often a result of a lack of a big in that situation.

Example from today, down 1, under 40 seconds, they miss layup on left side, Finke playing out of position, Wesson gets the easy put back. Add a big down there next year and those "few plays" will hopefully begin to disappear which will increase the win column.

Tired of watching the offense at the end of games devolve into Frazier dribbling and taking a bad shot. We got that offense with Groce.

Without KN and LB on the floor, unfortunately thats what our roster is left with. Again, go back and look at the lineup on the floor the final 10 minutes of the first half when we went scoreless, all 3 in foul trouble. Ultimately, those 3 on the bench is what cost us this game.

sigh
another frustrating finish (and game all around). When we were up big in the 1st half, I had a sinking feeling that we'd blow it and of course we did smh.

But not all is lost. We kept fighting until the bitter end and I really think we'll eventually turn the corner sooner than later . Underwood just needs some better personnel in the years to come.

Well, yes.....a loss IS a loss. Rebuilding or not.

I completely agree that the manner in which we compete matters a lot. And I'm pretty encouraged by how we're competing. Especially in contrast to the Groce era.

But we really need a serious talent upgrade if we want to get to where we're trying to go. It's pretty evident when you watch a guy like KBD absolutely destroy us. That's my only point. Simply being "in the game" -- while better than being blown out -- isn't sufficient. At some point we have to start winning.

I'm not particularly disappointed. I had us losing by 12. I think we'll get there.

I don't think we necessarily need a MAJOR upgrade. But lots of that depends on if Mark Smith and Kipper Nichols develop. We need more balance. Bigs and a shooter would be nice.

But talent wise, MSU is the only team that is way ahead of us. We're not far off from everyone else. The problem is other teams are either more balanced, more experienced, or more athletic. We have none of that. If we just add one of those then we're right in the middle of the B1G and on the bubble. Luckily, we add a bunch of experience as our whole team comes back.

I can't go back and look at it, but I believe he actually did say he was "ok" with the refs calling it that way. I could be wrong. I don't have anything against Bardo doing our games, I just thought that comment was strange at the time.

I took it as the veteran player would get the benefit of the doubt.

Alstork stepped up today. Really liked that he was right there when AJ got pushed. May not have been proper, but it makes a statement. The team is coming together on a personal level.

I know this was a frustrating game. Coulda, shoulda won it. But, we did give the 17th ranked team in the country a good game on THEIR court. If this game is at SFC, I think we win it.

Things are looking up. Next year, everyone will have another year of experience and we add (at a minimum) a 5-star guard. I'm very optimistic about where we're headed.

Need infusion of talent.

Having said that, there are a few that are carrying this team and will be far better the next few years.

Just out of curiosity, who all, from this team, will have their degrees this year end?

I used to be like everyone else and take players out when they had 2 fouls in the first half. Then I was a jv coach in a regional championship and our best player got 2 fouls in the first quarter. Our head coach looked at me and said “we have to leave him in.” He finished the game not fouling out. I think that is what we need to do with Trent Leron and Miller. We aren’t going to win without them. And “protecting” them by sitting is the equivalent of fouling out. I would rather them play as long as possible. Maybe if we keep Trent in we don’t blow the whole lead and we have enough to hang on. Idk I just think with our lack of depth we. See to play those guys come hell or high water and roll the dice. I would rather have a 10 point lead with 3 minutes to go and then all fouled out than be tied or down 5 and try to win.........
