He came from USC. That's all you need to know. USC in their worst year is better than Illinois in their best year. And it is amazing that all the experts on this forum already assume he can't coach. Hah!

Who said he couldn't coach?

That's a fair point, but i'm not sure folks assumed he can't coach. I think most folks see him more as a question mark.

I'm absolutely thrilled with the news of Austin Clark joining the staff. As Lovie stated, our staff and team is a melting pot of a lot of different skills, experience, strengths.

It’s been a long time since I have posted, but I wanted to keep it simple on this first post back. In 2010 Illinois hired a 26 year old GA from Arkansas to replace the TE coach who left in the spring of that year. This GA was Chip Long, now at 34 the OC at Notre Dame. I can tell you that after being around the college game for four years, there are some established coaches who have made their way up through no merit—simply who they know. They barely had an idea of what was going on. There are others, sometimes those that start as GAs, that are naturals at a young age. I will defer to the fact that USC was going to hire him as their DL coach if their current one left. USC has slightly more pull in assessing coaching quality than Illinois.

Illinois: Cody Gibson, a defensive graduate assistant at West Virginia, has accepted an offensive quality control job on Lovie Smith’s staff, per source.

Crazy day in a crazy profession. Had a blast during my time at WVU working for my home state team. Today I’m heading out to the University of Illinois to be Offensive Quality Control. Excited for this opportunity #HailToTheOrange

I'm assuming this is a rather minor hire, and he isn't the 10th assistant.

What in the blue blazes is "offensive quality control?"

What in the blue blazes is "offensive quality control?"

It's a common position, in both FB and BB (though they might drop the offensive part of the title), professional and college. From my understanding, they basically prep information for coaches/players on opponents. Essentially, they do the boring, mundane work that would be a waste of time for actual coaches to perform.

Also, theres been some big names that started as quality control guys--Mike McCarthy and Jon Gruden are the two I know of.

Per Wikipedia... LOL

Offensive quality control will chart the upcoming teams' defense for various down and distance situations, field positions and how many times they use particular personnel groupings.

Sounds like an analytical position. Going over film, charting formations, tendencies, etc. Sounds like a cool job!

What makes you excited?

Lovie's description of his enthusiasm, his vision for the DL, and for his appeal to recruits. We have a very experienced coaching staff, so I think adding a young guy to the group will help us in recruiting and in bringing high energy to practices.

#Illini football has added two graduate assistants to the staff:

- Miles Smith, Lovie’s son, who previously had served as quality control coach for Tampa Bay Bucs.

- Rob Delaney, who played OL at Dayton with Shane Toub and was an assistant coach at Ohio Wesleyan.

Its crazy how slowly information leaks out of this administration. Is anyone smart enough to deduce the hire from flight tracker?

I think it's probably just quiet because they have forgotten to hire someone... eventually they will read this thread and get right on it. LOL They're not gonna read this thread.
