Coaching Carousel

I have to admit, I don't follow the eastern teams in the B1G anymore. My first thought when I heard the name Pat Chambers was Tom Chambers. I was like, nfw is he coaching PennSt !

One of the all time coolest uniforms in the NBA.

The Orlando Magic have expressed interest in Michigan State coach Tom Izzo for the team's head coaching position, league sources told The Athletic.

Izzo strikes me as the kind of guy who's too proud to see the sh!t storm brewing at MSU. He's had NBA offers in the past, and this would probably be the correct time to get out of dodge, but he's going down with the ship in East Lansing, I assume.

I think Izzo could be a really successful NBA coach. He's obviously a great coach—both developing players and X's and O's—and has a big enough personality to deal with NBA players...

...But that Magic organization is a trainwreck. They're a long way from being competitive and don't really have the assets to build it up in the near future (Fournier? Gordon? the 6th Pick?).

If I'm Izzo, making the jump to the NBA makes sense, but I'd hold out for a better situation than Orlando. The Bucks would have been a great landing spot, but even Detroit makes more sense than Orlando.

I would think Orlando living would appeal to him, though.

Maybe, but in the NBA it's almost irrelevant where you live. During the season, you have no free time to be out golfing or anything and are on the road more than you're home. During the offseason, players and coaches can pretty much live wherever they want.

His little tyrant act would not work at the next level. Pitino part deux, IMO.

If people are going to start digging into the college ranks looking for the next Brad Stevens, I think they'll be sorely disappointed. The next Brad Stevens is probably scheduled to arrive in about 40 years. A rare bird.

Maybe. He fits the profile. But difference-making NBA coaches are rare. There's no real reason to think any given college coach would be one. You wouldn't have predicted Stevens would be one.

Um, Fred Hoiberg says hello! And totally agrees with you.

Hoiberg took Lauri M and really developed him this past year. Props to Hoiberg.

Yes it does. Time to move on, he was two coaches ago.

I’m actually glad Bruce got his extension. Means Underwood’s alma mater won’t come calling for at least another couple years. Hence the celebration GIF. :)

This feels like a move to get a contract boost at UM, but significant nonetheless

@wojespn: The University of Michigan's John Beilein interviewed for the Detroit Pistons coaching job on Thursday, league sources tell ESPN.

One last big pay day before retirement maybe.

He's 65 years old, so maybe wants to try his chops coaching at the ultimate level as his last hurrah. Can't say it would hurt me to see him go from scUM even though I like him as a person.

I can't remember who it was, but months ago on Zach Lowe's podcast a writer had alluded to the fact that NBA front offices were interested in Beilein. I think there's legitimate smoke here.
