Sounds like Illinois is on him regardless of whether you are or aren't. ;)

He just doesn't fit the mold of the long, rangy type we like for the pressure D. I know the dude has crazy hops and can play. My mind just goes to Isaiah Thomas type defense and I cringe

Why is the staff wasting an OV on a kid like Shannon, who sure seems to have signaled that his interests lie elsewhere?

I'd be happy with either, or both. With respect to Jacobs, I mean, let's get weird, right? This is a team that thrives on disruption at both ends of the court, and he's a guy who's got unusual abilities that will be a pain to prepare for. If he winds up being nothing more than a change-up, it'll be worth it.

As for whether or not we'll have the room, I think we'll have the room. Odds are pretty good that we'll have four or five rides this year, just because. You can burn one on a guy like Jacobs.
Do schools really take more commits than they have openings? I don't think I would like that message if I was on the current roster.

I mean, they must think Illinois has a better chance with him than this board does. He's an in-state top 100 kid. If you think you have a 10-15% chance to land him, you probably roll the dice.

Especially with our recent track record both on the court and in recruiting, I think we have to take good, local players even if their position isn't really a need. We will be better either way and success with local/Chicago talent could make a real impact on recruiting. I also get the feeling that Adam Miller won't be worried about Jacobs as much as Ayo and has played with both already anyways.

To further your point, just like with Kahlil Whitney, Adam Miller is by no means a sure thing, especially once the blue bloods come knocking. A bird in the hand...

Best guess: the staff has a better antenna than you and gets a much clearer version of Shannon's signals.

Dan, any chance you can create a thread with helpful suggestions for the coaching staff? I'd hate to think that they'd have to sift through an entire thread to get great tips and advice on recruiting.

You forgot to tag him. Next time use @Dan and he will get a notification.

I tried to click on the UIHoopsRecruits Twitter on Jacobs not coming on the 22nd but it appears to be down. So which is it? Is he still coming or not?

Because he is a young kid and they make irrational decisions that sometimes they should not be held to the fire for (no not the Mac Irvin Fire).

If he truly had no interest in coming to UIUC, he would've used the OV else where, I believe recruits are capped to 5. Considering how close UIUC is to Chicago, getting a free trip to Champaign seems very wasteful on his part, if he wasn't at least moderately interested in coming here. I guess if you are truly cynical you could conceive a story along the lines he wants us to waste OV's, but I think even the most hardened conspiracy theorists on this board would have a tough time believing that.

Not sure what signals you're referring to, unless you mean his comments about programs not prioritizing him. This board jumped all over those words as an indication as why he didn't commit here, but i doubt anyone here knows if that was directly at us and it might have been directed at multiple programs. Also, if it's true and we/others slow played him, yet DePaul made him seem like some sort of king, it doesn't take an expert in psychology to see why they would look 1000x more appealing than we would. I would imagine that high wore down pretty quickly and level heads prevailed, thus the decommit.

If you take # of Spots to fill, and divide by OVs available, you're probably using your resources wisely. If it's a much longer shot, you'll, on average, run out of visits, which has the potential to drop your odds even further.

I understand that schools do this, but it seems particularly unseemly to take more commits than openings in the fall signing period before the season starts.

OldSlowPG would like to boldly go on the record as the first board member who prefers filling spots in the spring.
