Illinois 83, Grand Canyon 71 POSTGAME

I was at the game last night. On my way out after the game was over, and older lady (GCU fan) asked me "what was wrong with #15?" (Giorgi). I asked her what she meant and she said something about him taunting the student section and what that says about his character. I didn't see what happened but I just kinda shrugged and walked away.

Had a lot of fun at the game though. The atmosphere was insane and it was great to see the Illini play. GCU fans were very polite (aside from that odd conversation I mentioned). I'll definitely be pulling for them to do well going forward. Kofi looks massive in person, even from the upper level. Also, very random celebrity sighting. Frankie Muniz was sitting right below me at courtside.
So much for 'do unto others...'

I have never been to a college game like last night where the GCU fans were CRAZY. Shooting 55% from 3 in the first half kept them in the game, but I like the way Our team kept their poise and finished strong.

Agree. And a lot of college teams can learn from GCU on how to create an atmosphere.

And they’re 2-0.
Train wreck does not apply to this team based on results
You're right, 2-0 doesn't qualify as a train wreck, but I can definitely understand some of the concerns that are being raised. The defense actually doesn't bother me too much because it's obvious that BU has (thankfully) changed defensive systems relatively drastically, so there will be some growing pains as they play against live opponents. Let's just hope they get it figured out by the time conference games start.

I have no idea what she means, but I'm guessing it is Giorgi being Giorgi. He is obviously a very gregarious person and was just having fun.

Honestly, what are you talking about? First of all, people were clearly commenting on their campus’ culture, fans’ commitment/loyalty and hostile home court atmosphere ... not how good their team is. Secondly, I’m not sure if you noticed, but we marched in there 1 out of 1 times and beat them by double digits. I’ll bet you anything we’d do it 8 out of 10 times, likely more.

Not entirely accurate, multiple posts on how this was a quality win, one that is some form of a staple because of the hostile environment, road game, etc.. Sure, given the road atmosphere, anyone could argue the win was quality.

My personal opinion is that no more needs to be said that a D2 program, and one that was NAIA until 2017, just went to the same place and won by double digits. If we won by 20+, ok, but the game was a 4 point spread relatively late, at this stage in BU’s tenure, with the talent we have, I believe this win is questionable at best. Vegas at -6.5 is probably more of an indictment that nobody knows what this team is yet.

I am simply stating my opinion, and am placing a higher standard on our program, and am struggling to get excited about beating Grand Canyon Who.

Well they just lost to a D2 team that’s 10 minutes from my house, but with Grand Valley State 15 minutes the other way, both D2 sports powerhouse schools. I didn’t exactly think Davenport beating them in same environment would happen, not sure this win for Illinois is too impressive

I didn't say it was an impressive win for Illinois. I said I was impressed with GCU as a whole. Maybe you read it wrong.

I feel like we have had this conversation like 7/10 years. We are 2-0 which is good, however these 2 games plus the exhibition showed some real problems and to act like they don't exist just gives us a bigger problem when we lose 6 in a row in Feb. This team is undefeated with a ton of talent but a complete lack of killer instinct. They have been outworked each game I have seen. If that happens against a team of equal or better talent we will not win...

I haven't seen Giorgi play in person, but have read in Illinireport and other sources that he is a massive sh*talker. I've seen him yapping up and down the court but I'm sure there's a ton that we miss if only watching on TV.

trash talking is part of the game. I’m sure the student section had stuff to say to him. As a coach I’d prefer my players to leave the stands alone, or not talk if it negatively impacts their game.

Giorgi seems to get more energized when he talks, so more power to him.

As opposed to dead ones? Sorry, I couldn't resist. :)

Giorgi kind sort and don't gut me for this....but reminds me just a little of James Augustine. He gets really passionate and into the game. I know it's been two games (well 3), but I think this team when they are clicking can turn some heads this season. I hope that's the case.

Giorgi told me yesterday in Phoenix that he wanted to have as much fun as he possibly could in playing college basketball & that playing in front of the GCU fans was like playing in games in his country. Said he had a blast friday night.

Giorgi was saying "You're not the boss of me now" to Frankie Muniz. That's what happened. Giorgi is a fan of Malcolm in the Middle obviously! Duh!

Giorgi don't change a thing!

Ok, maybe make more FT's and 15 footers. We NEED more attitude! That swagger will get us through those runs like GCU had. It will be the difference in close games in the B1G.

The Flyin' Illini and '05 Illini had that swagger. They knew. Giorgi acts like he knows and it needs to spread.

If you have the bite, you can bark all you want.
