Miami 81, Illinois 79 POSTGAME

Sad when the announcers say things like" Illinois didn't come to play"...hope they can use statements like that to get motivated going forward... otherwise mediocre at best

Not sure what's wrong with this team. Talent is there, just doesn't quite mesh. I'd switch up rotation. We got three PGs and two Centers starting. With first 3/4 guys off the bench being wings. Take two of the starters out and bring in AG and Tevian/Damonte. Much more balanced and could give our 2nd unit playmakers that it's missing. Copy the Clippers model.
This, big time on this. Starting line up should be:
Ayo, Trent, Damonte, Griffin, and Kofi. This offense isn’t clicking at all. It seems we had our best runs with this line up in the game tonight.

WE always gotta give someone a career night right?
That's the Illini Special. "Hey does your team have shooting woes?? Book a game with Illinois! They'll straighten out whatever ails your team!!"

Feliz, Griffin, Kofi... want it. Trent, Ayo, sometimes want it, sometimes don't. Damonte doesn't really want it. Not sure what happened to Giorgi. He used to want it.

Lmao! That was an entertaining game thread!
It’s like a bunch of mice jumping off the burning ship, except it’s just a grease fire.

Yeah, the kitchen is a mess, but we still have good cooks and plenty of ingredients.

Now if we could just stop lighting grease fires.....

I’ll give my take on tonight game (for what it’s worth). I’m no coach, played ball 1 year in high school, but I have basketball intuition (so I believe). First, great comeback, I appreciate the heart. I truly believe that no one here is as disappointed as the team and Underwood right now. We got blitzed the first half and it looks as if Miami did an incredible job scouting us. I’ll tell it how it is...

1. Ayo isn’t as aggressive as he should be, and should get to the line a lot more than he has. He had the athletic ability to do so and needs to become the CONSISTENT leader of this team, regardless of Kofis emergence and attention, Ayo is the leader and needs to assert himself.

2.Giorgi, I love Giorgi last year, this year, he’s out of place, playingon the perimeter too often leading to fouls and worse, blow by’s by guards. He was miraculous as our 5 last year and I think Kofi and him should be a 1-2 punch instead of playing together.

3. Felix was non-existent tonight, but that won’t last.

4. Trent Frazier needs to drive more, draw fouls. Defense wasn’t as stellar as the previous games.

5. Damonte, we expect what we expect. Good defense, IQ and a few hard nose plays. This game wasn’t lost by him, Ayo and Giorgi need to understand they are the leaders.

6. Alan griffin, against quality opponents, not so many offensive rebounds huh? Shoot well and probably had more looks that he had a chance to take.

Overall: Year after year... after year, my expectations arise and fall sooner than I have a chance to enjoy them. This loss is B1G and has a much bigger impact than I think most realize. At home, down 20 at half, come back only to lose by 2? At that point it looks like Miami let uo and if they would’ve kept their foot on the gas it could’ve been worse. Miami shot very well, Ayo will be here next year, anticipate a possible decommit from Adam and next year (as we all say EVERY YEAR for the past 5+ years, should be better).
Brought to you by Stella Artois.

This loss is heavily attributed to scheduling. We can't play not only lowly D1 teams and take 8 days off and be prepared for any acc team.

P.s. if a guy is 5'7" and starts for a power 5 team, he's probably a special kind of scorer. We just allowed even their supporting casts feel way too confident.

I missed the first half. It looked like ILL could beat anyone if the team plays like it did the last eleven minutes.
Unfortunately they spotted the other guy 25 in the first 30 so... kinda like they played AZ for 20.

I know he had some bonehead moments but also brilliant moments. That being said BU can’t afford not to play Allan Griffin he has to play. He and Frazier are our best shooters period

I'm sure Underwood told Ayo to take the last shot. If Ayo is the leader of the team, the ball's in his hand. You can play for a rebound, but you don't give the other team a chance to go back down the court.
Actually, you usually don't run down the clock when you're down. I'd love to see what coaches think on this but I think the conventional way of doing this is to get a good shot early to give yourself opportunities for offensive rebounds, etc.

Its also disappointing that Giorgi plays so much better when our best player is on the bench. They better figure that one out real quick.
Those two should never, ever be on the floor together. GB is too limited offensively and especially defensively.

If that's what Underwood told Ayo then Underwood really is an idiot. You have time to set up a play and you only need a bucket. Find an open man and get him the damned rock. Hero ball should be your last option.

Last year the team was learning Underwood's system - position-less basketball, every guy should be a threat to drive off the weave. This year, I think Kofi changed the equation and the team doesn't know how to incorporate him, yet. Doesn't seem like Underwood's system has adapted. I like Giorgi's passing with Kofi. I'd like to see Ayo, Giorgi, and Kofi as the keys to the game, with Trent supplying the deep threat. At least, that's my theory and there are lots of people on here more knowledgeable.

LoL....if we don't properly use the ingredients soon they will expire before March

Honest question: What am I missing when it comes to Damonte?

I've seen a lot of "pro" Damonte comments in the game thread. Yet I am absolutely of the opposite mind: I think Damonte is a total offensive liability who can't shoot and doesn't know where he should be on the floor most times (he runs around like a headless chicken). On defense he's definitely better, but he still isn't some kind of game changer.

What are you guys seeing that I'm not?? I consider myself a pretty sharp eye of scheme and flow and sets and, of course, production. Damonte seems like a 5 out of 10, and I don't know why he's getting so many minutes when we need points.

Proud of the fellas for the comeback, but this one is on coaching and HORRENDOUS defense. Lykes made a lot of tough shots but the number of times we fell for pump fakes-too many to count. I miss the days where a game like this at home was never in question.

I don't really get it, either. I mean, I hope he does well and goes pro and gets drafted, of course. He is very good at hitting layups in transition. He's lanky for a guard. But I don't think he's shown to be particularly good at anything else (distance shooting, passing, quickness, etc.)

Yeah, he's athletic but stiff. Combine that with the so-so dribbling and a low shot release, and he's far less effective in isolation than I expected. If he wants to go this year he'll need to show he can be effective from three and at defense, since the lead guard pro potential is questionable.
