I don't have any objective data to back me up but it just seems as if most coaches who are fired/let go (or in other words did not leave voluntarily) first go the basketball color announcer first then sometimes get back into coaching. Or some seem to like being an announcer and never go back. But like I said, this is just the impression I get.

I think he'd be a good fit at Boston College if he wants to coach NCAA again.

Texas has a $10 mil buyout for Smart, the deep pocket boosters can afford to do this if they want...
Georgia Tech is almost certainly going to be looking, although this school in this conference is not a good gig...
Wake Forest buyout is probably to substantial for Manning to be leaving, although the school may want it.
Depaul small fish in big pond still, not the player for Beilein.

Texas will be the logical choice, although a Big East type of team probably would fit as well.

Wouldn't discount Notre Dame either.

Why would Brey be going anywhere?
This seems like a good question. I didn't realize he's been there 20 years and is their all-time winningest coach. I know the expectations are a bit high at ND (/s) but it's hard to imagine there's much unhappiness with the job that he's done.

It's not a given by any means but I have heard that it is on the shortlist of places that Beilein actually has an interest in.

Brey is doing just fine in my eyes but the boosters expect top-five finishes in the ACC and consistently top 25.

A lot of ND boosters not happy about that. They see the success Beilein had at UM and think it would be easy to replicate at ND.

Talk about unreasonable expectations! Yeah, they have to deal with the likes of Duke, UNC, Louisville, Syracuse, but they expect top 5 ACC finishes. Crazy...so let's fire your all time winningest coach who took you to the Elite 8 not once but in back-to-back years in the last six seasons, so yeah, fire him! Yowza....

well, he's all time winning just for longevity. He had those back to back elite 8s but really his tenure has been remarkably mediocre. He's at a good school in the center of a lot of basketball talent, presumably with a good budget and he's been pretty mediocre.

I'm not sure that you can expect a top coach to come in at all and I don't think you can expect the next guy to do better. But Brey's run has been fairly blase and I can see people wanting to move on.

Brey has been mentioned in a handful of hot seat reports over the past couple years. Sounds to me like his seat has been warm, but not hot. If they can make the tourney this year he's probably OK, but if not this would be the third year in a row they don't dance. If ND decides to change coaches, Beilein would be a good choice for them.

Texas was my immediate thought when I heard he was out.
Syracuse is a weird and intriguing option.

I don't see any decent Big Ten jobs opening up. How does the rest of the Big 12 look (or do they only hire ex-Illini coaches) for good/decent jobs opening? I would think Big East might be an option as well, but again I have no visibility to coaches on the hot-seat there.

Any position that opens up due to someone moving on to "bigger and better" would probably have already talked to Beiline to fill that bigger and better position :)

Doubtful any Big East positions come open beside Depaul.

Patrick Ewing's seat gets warm if no tourney this year.

Travis Steele's seat is going to be hot if Xavier doesn't make the tourney this year.

If Indiana misses the tourney this year, do they cut bait with Archie? I've never been a fan of his, and doubt he'll bring IU the success the fans desire.

He had that E8 run @ Dayton, but that was built on a lucky Aaron Craft layup rolling off the rim in the first round, and then a couple blown possessions in the final minute by Syracuse. Those wins count, but I think that's the only year he's made it past the 1st round.

He's got a buyout clause that would make this pretty pricey for IU.

And we wanted SMART...so, so bad.

I'm not surprised he struggled in the job, but I'm shocked he was that tone deaf; he always seemed to have a great relationship with his players at Michigan

You have more to hold over the heads of college players. You can't do that with grown men with big paychecks. They'll do their own thing and if you treat them like kids, you'll lose them.

Absolutely right. By your jr year many have learned to ignore all of the yelling and screaming. It definitely doesn't work in the pros. One has to really screw up before one will stand there and let a coach act like the player is a two year old.

I didn't even mean yelling and screaming. I more meant their scholarship and eligibility.

I didn't mean to imply that you did. My apologies. I think that Beilein is a real nice, personable person but, I have been told by guys there that he turned a lot of players off doing things of that nature. No one wants to go to work and be treated by a superior that way. It is not a motivator.

In addition to Belein being presented with a need to change his coaching approach after 40 years, he's also been dealing with the fallout from his son, Patrick, "resigning" before the start of his first season as a D-1 head coach at Niagara. A few months earlier, it might have seem like a natural transition point: moving out of college head coaching as his son moves in, but the rumors make you question if the once-promising young coach has any future in the game.
