The staff willing to take Shaw or not is going to be very interesting. We are about to see how much the staff values instate recruiting, if at all. Also I’m hearing we’re about to lose a commit, sigh.

Well considering we only have 2 according to 247sports and one committed this past week I’m assuming Collier? Unless Buchanan counts, but no recruiting sites or coaches have acknowledged his commitment.

Irving to Minny is a huge loss by this staff. They really need to pick it up on the recruiting because it is embarrassing at this point.

Collier huh? Seemed pretty pro Illini lately. Would explain offering another QB though.

Collier doesn’t have illini pinned in his twitter bio anymore. I don’t recall specifically what was there before but fairly certain it has a reference to Illini.

I’m not super high on him - wished they would have taken Tyler Macon from ESL rather than a middle of the road 3* from Texas, but decommit at this point would be a painful kick to take while down

Back to 1 commit. Not much different than having 2 anyway lol

It feels like all the momentum from last season is completely gone. How is the staff going to get it back? It is clear that their usual recruiting methods are NOT working in the current environment. I am fearful that this will put the program back in a downward spiral

I think the 3 game losing streak to end the season extinguished the momentum. I feel like the football and basketball teams had similar type seasons this past year, except the basketball team finished strong and I think you've seen how things are trending in opposite directions.

I think something that has to be discussed is mike Bellamy. At what point do we have to question his ability to land anything in state.

Thad Ward was not either his last year. Not saying Bellamy is great, but he doesn't exactly have a ton of help.

Okay but it’s still suppose to be his “area” and he’s pulled basically nothing in 3 classes. Gotta have something to show for recruiting your state.

Agree. And he is to blame but not even near the only one to blame.

That's certainly a valid argument, but I'd point you to the B1G schools with worse records and better recruiting thus far:
Maryland (3-9); #14 class; L7 to end season
Rutgers (2-10); #21 class; L4 to end season
NW (3-9); #33 class; W1 to end season
Neb (5-7); #35 class; L1 to end season
Purdue (4-8); #43 class; L2 to end season
Outside of Nebraska, none of those schools have a tradition that they can pull from. NW might be the only one whose facilities rival the Smith Center. So what are they doing that we are not? Maybe the staff is doing everything they can and recruits are choosing to go elsewhere; if that is the case, then so be it. However, everything seems to point to a lack of urgency.

Nebraska and Maryland have always had talented recruiting classes in the B1G regardless of record. Rutgers has a new coach which has proven to help recruiting in the short term. Northwestern has great facilities, academic reputation and recent success. Jeff brohm at Purdue is a great recruiter and has done great things at that program even if he hasn't won much there.

I'm not making excuses for lovies lack of recruiting ability. We should definitely be trending up in recruiting but comparing records and recruiting doesn't tell the whole story.

Perhaps like many baby boomers, he will consider whether he should be retiring sooner than later due to the pandemic.

If I'm the AD I would absolutely be on the phone over the next year or two looking for the next pj fleck to come here. unless we can get another slam dunk hire like that (I still consider lovie a great hire but hindsight is 20/20) I want to see lovie sink or swim.

I'm thankful for the job lovie has done. He took an awful team in an awful situation and made them competitive again. Im still cautiously optimistic that we haven't plateaued under lovie but it would be foolish to not being looking for the next guy that can take the foundation lovie has built and add to it.

Mikes fighting a big uphill battle in state and that battle wasn’t his doing.

I’ve been concerned by your more pessimistic attitude lately (not that it’s not justified, but that I would prefer hearing good news). Does Lovie have a future here? I am starting to get concerned about the inability to land hardly anybody in state. As someone already mentioned, we are behind offering people, even kids in our backyard (ex. the Beatty kid from Rochester who was offered by Iowa State). It’s sad to watch, and the pandemic is making it even worse.

sorry first post. When you only have one coach with instate Ties and other coaches that recruit other Areas then it gonna be hard to recruit in state. Allen trieu said in an article yesterday that Illinois is not recruiting the state as hard as years past. I think we couple dudes in states as Lineman but no skills positions which is not positive.

Sunket tweeting out mizzou edits isn’t going to help relations either. We have no prep support. Mostly it’s our fault but the HS coaches do nothing to help.

Sure he has a future if he keeps winning 6+ games every year and keeps hitting on high quality transfers. My concern is we are looking at a big talent drop off in 2 years and it’s hard to keep batting as well as he has on the transfer market.
