Catch & Release: Self is caught, but we all know how this turns out.

I just watched the 30 for 30 Lance Armstrong. This sounds a lot like Lance always being the aggressor when people indicated he was using PEDs.

I have a long history on this one --started following Lance as an amateur, and did some racing myself. Spoke with his teammates along the way, and attended a number of his early races. When he was known as a 'one-day' racer in the pro ranks, a friend asked me if he would win the TdF and I said I wouldn't put it past him, given how competitive he was (no one in the sports press that I'm aware of at that time thought he could convert). Eventually, he won Toud Dupont which was a hard stage race and the biggest in the US. Of course, then came the cancer and his remarkable story of not only surviving it, but avoiding some of the worst treatment options that would have ruined any potential career subsequently. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Everyone I've ever spoken with about Lance paints a picture of a ruthless dictator. He's not only oblivious to the devastation he wreaks, he's vindictive to those who get caught in his way. Below is an interesting read about some of the things he did to one his "friends". It's just one of a zillion stories on how he's gone after people that trusted him and supported him. Everyone loves a winner (me included), but rooting for him was a faustian bargain. It took tremendous work to bring the truth to light, and a lot of folks suffered to bring it out.

He's a fascinating story, and his unrepentant belief in himself makes it all the more so. IMHO, he's more of a cautionary tale of winning at all costs, and how difficult it is to topple a powerful person. It's a story that repeats itself constantly in sport.

Love the phrase “for conduct that is commonplace” like when is cheating going to be an issue for blue bloods.

Remember when President Nixon was interviewed and said, "if the President does it, it must be legal"? Just substitute Duke/North Carolina/Kansus....

“To put it bluntly, the NCAA enforcement staff is attempting to end Mr. Self’s long and very successful coaching career for conduct which all coaches engage in and which the NCAA has known for many years is commonplace and permissible.”

“To put it bluntly, the NCAA's (incompetent) enforcement staff (actually for once found enough violations to actually stick - which is saying something due to their lack of skills, and) is attempting to end Mr. Self’s long and very successful coaching career (because they are mean, mean people), and for breaking the rules for (illegal) conduct, (and because they are very mean), which all coaches (on our staff) engage in and which the NCAA has known for many years is commonplace and permissible (and they are mean) .”
FIFY. I have to give credit to Self's lawyer for using the controversial "busted 6th-grader" line of defense. "His illegal actions are actually OK, mostly because everyone is doing it." The only bigger head-scratcher is that.... it may work.

NCAA: LSU coach Will Wade part of 'impermissible payments' to potential recruits, others

The NCAA says LSU men's basketball coach Will Wade either arranged for or offered "impermissible payments" to at least 11 potential recruits or others around them, according to documents obtained Wednesday by ESPN.

The documents say the NCAA's enforcement staff received information that Wade "arranged for, offered and/or provided impermissible payments, including cash payments, to at least 11 men's basketball prospective student-athletes, their family members, individuals associated with the prospects and/or nonscholastic coaches in exchange for the prospects' enrollment at LSU."

Shocking, shocking I tell you. I guess LSU isn't a blue blood, at least in bball.

The NCAA is, in both football and basketball, like the Wild Wild West right now. Recruiting is sort of like self policing, if that is possible.

But if LSU deems the payments were permissible, the NCAA will probably be cool with it. It just depends on who you ask.

Best tailgate parts and food I've ever been to. They are pretty good at Football and Baseball too.

Not a Wade fan though. He is a snake like Cal, Pearl and Sampson.
Before I retired, I spent a lot of time in the deep south. The most reviled hated fan base in the SEC across the board. Obnoxious blowhards, Everybody hates LSU

So true. I will never forget walking a gauntlet to the Superdome for the 2002 Sugar Bowl with LSU fans yelling "tiger bait, tiger bait, tiger bait..." in our face.
Same here when we were on Bourbon Street the day before the game. Since it was basically a home game, the street was super crowded with purple and gold and their fans were unbelievably obnoxious. We had a couple of guys get in our faces, pointing their fingers inches away, screaming, “Tiger bait. Tiger bait.” My husband, who takes a lot to get angry, was so ready to fight one jerk that I had to separate them. Also talked to one relatively nice fan that said it was free tuition for instate with no ACT/SAT tests required, so anyone, no matter what his/her grades, could attend LSU.

LSU fans are some of the worst. Your other mistake was going to Bourbon Street. There are so many better places to go at night that don't smell like urine.

LOL, sacraig, you’re right. First time we’d been to New Orleans so we went to Bourbon Street. Two nights before the 2002 game, we had a blast though. Since it was basically a home game, and they didn’t have to stay in hotels, LSU fans were not there at all. Bourbon Street was entirely full of Orange and Blue. Lots of I-L-L/I-N-I chants. We ran into my high school biology lab partner and many other Illini that we hadn’t seen in years. Then the purple jerks arrived the next day. The lack of class and any kind of sportsmanship of those fans was only rivaled by the USC fans at the Rose Bowl.

One of the best times I ever had at an Illini basketball game was in December 1988 at LSU when we kicked their a**!!!!!!! We stayed in New Orleans and drove over to Baton Rouge and back. Bourbon street was fun for us that night.

You definitely need to do Bourbon Street once in your life, but that is about all you need. It's still really neat during the day but at night it is just out of control. It's like an entire neighborhood of nothing but the crappiest bars and a few good ones interspersed. Go to Paddy O's and get a hurricane and find a hand grenade and whatnot. Then go see the rest.

And don't miss dinner at Jacques-Imo's.

I think NCAA may be forced to act on Kansas, et al.

If they fail to assert their authority against the “blue bloods” they play into the argument that the NCAA doesn’t serve a purpose that can’t be handled by the conferences.
