Yep, off to a good start as a candidate for Mr BB of Indiana.
My only issue with using the transfer market is we have yet to prove we can consistently land impact players. So far Feliz is the only one even though we have been after several each year. Texas Tech and Baylor have shown it can work, but that doesn’t mean it will. When you miss on your top targets, it’s another option that you still have. I’m just skeptical it will be the great equalizer that at least a few believe it will be. I’ll keep my fingers crossed. We should know by late July.
And there were a lot of people on here who were negative about taking a JUCO PG out of Northwest Florida State. Still negative Nancy's after Feliz' first year at UI. But man, did they ever get on the band wagon after last year.
For those who say the transfer market hasn't been good to us in the past... Is that a surprise? We weren't good. Transfers are typically looking for a team they can have an immediate impact on and see success. We're just now becoming an attractive destination for the transfer market. It's important to consider priorities that we were after that went elsewhere. T.J Holyfield at Texas Tech comes to mind. I think this staff will figure it out.

1000000% this. Before last year, why would any coveted transfer come here? We weren't winning, didn't have any sort of NBA pipeline in terms of player development, and we got pretty much 0 national exposure. We are in a much different situation as a program now.

This whole idea that we shouldn’t recruit transfers because it hasn’t worked consistently for us is baffling to me. So is the staff just supposed to recruit 4* and 3* high school guys because that’s what Illinois has been consistently good at landing?
Not gonna try and translate for someone else, just speak for myself. I am all for landing impact transfers. I am not going to get too optimistic it will happen, or that we will land the type of transfer that will make up for our inability to land our top HS priorities this recruiting cycle. I'm hopeful, but skeptical, and I assume that's where a lot of other people are coming at this from.

My only point is that is has not proven to be reliable yet so depending on it to cover misses is not likely to be successful. I am also not saying that’s what the staff is doing. Some on this board are saying that the misses don’t matter because we can fill the spots with transfers. My comment is directed to them which may or may not include you. You are free to disagree.

I think we've been through this debate at length. Seems that we concluded we've periodically (albeit infrequently) found some talent via the transfer route:
1. Ken Norman
2. Marcus Griffin
3. Andres Feliz
4. Derek Holcomb
Considering we're still a Top 15 program overall (in the history of NCAA basketball) and have the ability to attract top talent, you'd have to conclude that we've not really been productive with transfers.

I agree that the misses matter and that it hasn’t proven to be reliable yet. I just don’t see a lot of other options in recruiting this year. Like I said, I think this team has guys that can be scorers or “the guys” so I don’t think we need that type of player from the transfer market. Just guys to fill the gaps with defense/rebounding you would have if Kofi leaves. If you can find guys on the transfer market to replace scoring, great but I think that’s less likely. This team won’t need a transfer to be what Rayvonte Rice was for that team though. I also don’t think the transfer market is something you should bank on every year going forward either.
Kenny Battle, Jeff (I think) Dawson, and Rayvonte Rice were transfers too, right? I think it can help for a year here and there but isn’t something you can count on year after year.

Kenny Battle wasn’t exactly bad.
I posted this in the post-game thread last night but figured it bears reposting here. Miller and Curbelo both committed to a team loaded with upperclassman at their positions and both just played 20+ meaningful minutes in Cameron. Competition should almost never be used an excuse why a recruit picks another school.

We are in the final four along with Kansas State, Providence, and Oregon State I believe. Looking to commit in March.
Reggie is originally from Muncie, IN. Played his freshman year at Muncie Central HS before transferring to Hamilton Heights. Plays AAU for Team Teague.
He's a real tough kid, puts up good numbers. Staff likes his game a lot, don't know how serious the pursuit is at this point though.

Along with Battle, Rice were Jack Ingram, who was crucial in the AZ game In 05. IIRC, Norman came off the bench in one game as a unknown and lit it up. I believe Heldman was also a transfer. Griffin was a transfer after playing JC ball for a year. We have had moderate success overall in the transfer market. But we did have bad transfers during the Weber years after 06. Groce had a few also. BU has one bad transfer on record, Alstork, but Feliz was a hit, and De La Rosa was marginal at best Then of course, we have Tyler Underwood who was a hit . LOL. I think if we can bring one solid transfer a year, we will be ok.
Heldman was a recruit out of high school as I remember.
