Worn out from screaming at the tv. I thought Ayo was going to pull it out. It’s tough to win on the road against a solid team when you get out rebounded and shoot 17-28 from the line.

#152
Huh? Hes above 40% from 3 on the year on 3-4 attempts per game.
Take out game 1 against a gimme and he’s only made 4 3s in the last 5 games. He’ll have plenty of opportunity to prove his shot has improved in Big Ten play, but he hasn’t done enough this year so far on his shot. The rebounding is great and should help his stock and the big scoring number was good also.

I said it before but I stand by it - this team has a high floor and a high ceiling. Mizzou is good. They will surely be ranked much of this year. Speaking purely in terms of resume, this likely will not be a bad loss. We played like garbage, beat ourselves at the stripe and still nearly stole this thing at their place. We’re going to improve and be very good as the season goes on.
I hope Mizzou is good. Honestly not sure. Their signature win (pre-Illini), Oregon, barely held off an atrocious Washington team today. This whole discussion reminds me of how last season we got worked by Arizona, so we thought Arizona was amazing, and in the end it turned out that Arizona was a pretty so-so team and we really should have been able to beat them.

Having watched a fair amount of Missouri basketball over the past couple years (why, I don’t know) this years team passes the eye test. I think most Mizzou fans would agree. They’re a tough physical team that is more than the sum of their parts. They’re about to have a # next to their name.

Missed opportunity, so hope it is a learning experience. Poor rebounding and free throw shooting made this a tough game to win. Need to play hard the whole game and we would win this game, I'm fairly sure.

Some of the team didn’t step up.

Um, at 4:05, Kofi doesn't catch a feed from Curbelo and then Ayo get's called for charge, could have been called a block very easily.
At 3:46 Kofi is standing out of bounds when we get a chance for a rebound. Mizzou ball.
At 3:20 Ayo scores on contested layup. 76-76
3:09 Curbello gets a bogus foul called, they make 2 free throws. 76-78
2:57 Demonte misses wide open 3
2:25 Ayo is fouled on layup but no call, ball hits side of backboard.
1:54 Kofi strips Tilman who fouls out. 76-78 still
1:30 Ayo turnover on inbound play. Ugh.
1:12 Mizzou travel call, our ball
1:07 Mizzou flop, Ayo called for charge. Could have easily been called block. Easily. Had arm bent as coached.
:54 Mizzou make highly contested shot in lane vs Curbello and Ayo. Nice play, ugh. 80-76
:41 TERRIBLE FLAGRANT CALL against Kofi. Just Terrible! Somehow bucket counts?? 78-80
:41 Mizzou makes 1 free throw. 81-78, Mizzou ball
:10 Illinois shuts down Mizzou and clock violation!
2 minute break for clock evaluation, clock reset from 9.9 to 10.9
Ayo is not even breathing hard. Take a bad shot on the run with 3 seconds left, Illinoi fouls to stop clock.
:03, Mizzou misses FT and Ayo launches 3/4 court shot that had a legit chance.
This is not Ayo's fault. If the Refs just called one of the 3 bad calls differently, lot's change. If Demonte hits his uncontested, wide open 3, we are up. If any of our other players played just a little better throughout this game, different outcome. Watch the last 5 minutes again and then try to blame this on Ayo. No way.
Its Ayos fault and even he would say so because thats what great players do this absolution you are attempting to give him makes no sense .

Great players want the ball in their hands down the stretch of a close game and if they have the ball in their hands and they dont even get a shot attempt on multiple occasions then the blame falls at their feet .It wasnt a Giorgi off the ball foul that took away his chance at a shot it was his own decision making and yes the calls could've gone ether way but part of the responsible of a closer is to not let the game be decided by the refs .

Ayos lack of a move to free himself for a three point shot is a problem and will hurt his pro chances if he doesn't develop it over this season.

If that's the kind of last second 3 point shot we are going to take, they should have let me shoot it. At least I would have been on two feet.
Miller was coming around the baseline screens for the pass... Ayo just jumped too soon or the timing was off.

Either way, we looked bad offensively in the last 3 minutes with what seemed like more turnovers than shot attempts.

If Williams would have hit that open corner 3 to give us the lead, I think we would've finished them off.

Kofi has really been getting me fired up. Catch the ball man. Get mean. Play with force. Hate to rag on our guys but he has been so frustrating.
And he wants to play in the NBA...lol. At this rate, he’s going to be playing in China

Coaching blah blah blah....put 5 top-100 guys on the floor and win the goddamned game. I know we’re back but, man, just go out and out-talent a Missouri team one time.

Ayo hesitated consistently when three was there. He lacks confidence in 3p

Poor free throw shooting in the first half and poor last 2 minutes in second half standout but we still have turnover issues and rebounding lapses. A long way to go but right now we are a good team not great. Other players than just 2 or 3 have to contribute on a consistent basis. Thats what great teams do. We have to get things figured out in a hurry because the Big 10 will be merciless and only the strong will survive.

Yup, 4 top 50 guys should beat 1 top 50 guy all day long. If not, you point to only one thing....in game coaching. The use of the clock and timeouts in the last minute was a disaster.

Underwood: That was what happens when you don't make FTs, you shoot 'em absolutely atrocious & you don't get offensive rebounds. Our lack of energy, lack of effort is beyond explanation.

Underwood: When you're missing free throws, you're not mentally sharp

Underwood: I would prefer (Ayo) would never have to score that many points... I also told him he can't have 6 turnovers. Ayo's a great player. Missed FTs that he doesn't miss.

Underwood: "Trying to drive it to the rim for a quick two" when Ayo took that awkward three late in the game

Underwood on being -9 in rebounding margin: "Oh, it's all effort... I will get that problem solves, I promise you."

Underwood: No one on our team had an offensive rebound in the 1st half. I don't know if I've ever had that in my career.

Underwood: Baylor was better than us that night. Tonight reminded me of the Ohio game when we were just flat.

Ayo Dosunmu said he heard Mizzou coaches yell "foul" before his last shot so he tried to draw contact when Mizzou reached at him.

Underwood: Trying to follow MSU nonconference blueprint."I've never dodged anyone."

Can’t give up 81 pts and get out rebounded and win. Sorry to say we got outcoached. I am including lousy free throwing as coaching as we have consistently stunk all season. Blaming it on the refs or lack of effort is BS. Something is wrong when Curbelo is out rebounding Miller.

I love Ayo, but too much hero ball at the end. He forgets there are 4 other guys on the floor in those situations. Curbelo on the other hand has a knack for finding the open guy and getting him the ball. Seems pretty obvious you'd want him handling the ball with Ayo playing off the ball
exactly

Lots of things went poorly, but the simple fact was Missouri just took it to us. Again. They were ready for a battle and we weren’t. Idk why. Seemed like they got every 50/50 ball. They took us out of our game and we were unable to adjust. I know we will get better but it’s disappointing that the edge we had at the end of last year isn’t there right now. I honestly expected us to pick up where we left off. Our 3’s are still not dependable even with the upgrade in talent. Tonight we badly missed Dre’s toughness.

Bottom line is we will be fine but we don’t deserve our current ranking. We need to earn it and if we fall out of the top ten maybe it will help Underwood light a fire under some guys not named Ayo. He’s a stud and we’d probably be out of the top 25 without him right now.

I was a little upset when we took our last timeout.

I would have preferred to go for the quick 2 (or only take a 3 if it’s WIDE open) and call a timeout immediately after. With 10.9 seconds left, if you score quickly, get your timeout and foul quickly, you probably have 4-5 seconds left after their free throws.

Free-throw shooting
23% from 3
Trent, Girogi, Adam and DaMonte need to contribute
54 personal fouls really disrupted the flow of the game
Smith and Tilmon were non-factors
A game we definitely should of won.

Unpopular opinion:
We win by 2 against Ohio U
We get exposed by Baylor
We beat a soft “Duke” team
We lose to Mizzou for the 3rd year in a row
We aren’t a top 10 team
We might make the sweet 16
Ayo and Kofi will be on campus in 2021
..........
Someone tell me I’m wrong
Had same thoughts, maybe Kofi returns. BU teams have improved as season goes on. Big10 going to be tough on all teams.

Mizzou just wanted it more than us. Looks like our kids have been watching the headlines and playing like they are entitled to win because of their high ranking. I do think we will be better as the year moves forward, but it's going to take quite an attitude adjustment if we expect to win many games.
