Isn't there typically a different, usually lower, buyout when it's the coach deciding the part ways instead of the team?
It depends, but the point is, he's walking away from a massive payday if he doesn't wait for Texas to fire him.

That's a really messy situation now, they got caught with their hand in the cookie jar with Urban Meyer, and have really damaged Herman's credibility. Don't be shocked if that thing blows up before the carousel stops.

Yeah true. He's at 6 mil a year. Next year he either turns it around and gets a raise or gets fired and walks away with 8 figures.

Interesting 10 hours ahead of us:
1) Buffalo waxes Ball State 49-10 tonight and we all jump on flight tracker by 11pm.
2) Buffalo eeks one out or loses, and this board goes into full meltdown mode.

I like both scenarios to be honest.
I don’t see how the results of tonite game has anything to do with him getting hired at Illinois .

Listening to J break down how to read and react after one of the earlier losses was outstanding. Think it was a Werner podcast but not sure. He was basically saying there’s no reason for guys being out of position all the time. Know the reads and you will be in the right spot. Our guys were not doing that. Can he teach it? I don’t know but he sure as hell knows his stuff.
J would be an outstanding assistant - very intelligent, passionate, incredibly hard working

Almost 90 I believe, and I hear he can "beat his age" in golf. I highly recommend Saturday Sports Talk with Loren and Steve Kelly. Great guests, lots of reminiscing, the inside scoop on all of your historical Illini favorites and oftentimes hints of upcoming announcements (i.e. recruit signings and coaching hires).
I heard he was born in ‘22 and his all-time favorite Illini is Doug Altenberger. 😲 BUSTED! Hi, Loren.

I think it's less about whether he gets hired, and more about predicting the precise type of degeneracy that will take place on this board before Sunday.

Either way, my guess is it will involve GIFs.

I really just wanna know if I should be tuned into the Buffalo game tonight or if I can live my life haha
I was just thinking about this myself. I have other things I'd rather do tonight, but I think it's our duty as faithful Illini fans to watch this game, and then share our expert analyses with the forum afterwards.

In other words:
There are two kinds of Illini fans; (1) Fans that care enough to watch a MAC game on a Friday night in which one of the coaches MIGHT be hired in an attempt to rescue our program, and ... (2) Fans that have a life.

What kind of Illini Fan are you, that is the question. As for me, I'll be watching the darn game.

I agree. I was just trying to throw out some assistant coach names that we would be familiar with. I honestly don't see why Nate would come here, unless that ISU OC gets the head job and makes him our OC. Matt Campbell is about the best HC to work under right now if you're Nate. He'll be at a blue blood in the next 2 years and Nate very well could be OC in that timespan or soon after.
Has anyone checked the Iowa State board to see if they are laughing at us for wanting to steal their WR Coach as our HC or if they are petrified of losing him to us? Just curious. I would LOVE to get him on staff.

I'm pregamming for the MAC championship as we speak.

This creates the same kind of opportunistic saltiness when Okie State told BU they’d pay him final four money once he got to the final four, after using the same players to pull a full 180 in only one year. The last thing they saw were BU’s taillights.

I bet Herman would love a scenario where UT is left standing alone. This would be a dream scenario for me... But there’s a $15M hurdle that says “Not gonna happen.”

To me that would be the most un-Whitman-like hire. Obviously I don't know the true circumstances. Maybe Leipold completely blew the doors of the interview and JW was convinced he was the guy. But a LL hire is the easy hire. I think it'll still work. He's better than what we've seen the last 5 years.

To me a JW hire would be somehow convincing Fickell, or bringing in a young coordinator like Leonhard or Manning. I think JW would love to bring in BB, but is very self-conscious about his, and the school's image, and is hesitant to take the chance of damaging that image with a BB hire.
Now that Lovie cleaned things up after the Beckman **** show, we will not, under any of the coaches named on this thread, have a worse 5 year run record-wise.

The financials are just completely different, even eliminating the buyout, which I'm gonna assume isn't 15 mil when Herman is the one making the call, but I don't know the contract details.

Underwood was underpaid at OSU. Herman makes 6/year at Texas. I would be very hard to pull him away without matching that number at the very least.

Thanks for putting that together. It's interesting that 6 of the 15 hires went on to have winning records at their P5 programs (Pinkel, Meyer, Golden, Doeren, Campbell, Fleck)
One way of interpreting this.........a 40% chance of success. Well, that sucks.
