Perhaps you should view it differently.

Without the Covid rules, we were very likely going to have the largest drop-off in talent of all 14 teams in the Big 10.....primarily because we had so many senior starters in 2021 and a severe lack of talent behind them. More than anything, the new rules push that "cliff" out to 2022 and give BB an extra year to manage around it.

If Lovie had stayed and if Covid had not happened, we'd probably be facing 0-12 in 2021.
I wouldn't have looked at it this way initially. Makes sense, does the extra year show Lovies short comings or BB ability to coach up? Maybe neither but I will go for the later now. Just curious what can BB do if he wants to move on from some players? Make it obvious that the aren't in his future plans?

Being honest and straight forward with them is all you can ask from him. And this may be off topic, but what ever happened with Travon Sydney? Was he even on the field much this year?

Without knowing what the roster will look like for next season, could BB be interested in utilizing IW and Coran solely as WR's and/or return guys? Will he keep Brown and Okpolo as OL or return them to the D side? There's so much that will be unfolding during the next few months. Can't wait to see the direction BB will be taking this team in!

I’m not sure he was ever on the field. There are no stats listed for him and he was always injured.

He hasn't fully recovered from his knee injury last year. It was pretty bad

These players and hopefully others must feel confidence in BB and that he can help raise their NFL stock.

Several guys on the d line need a year of development and would benefit in staying.

Really pulling for Lowe to have a big year next year and make it to the NFL. He’s about to have two kids AND take custody of his younger brother. Glad to have him back.

Goodness. What an impressive young man. Happy to call him an Illini.

These early developments can really make for some interesting expectations for a first year coach. There's still a ton to iron out roster-wise and transfers in and out are going to be significant, but starting out with a returning offensive line of experienced, good seniors is a crazy good start.

Even more so to your point, with his track record and pedigree of physically dominant and intimidating offensive lines... BB should be able to run with that returning group of experienced lineman, push some of them into the league and raise their draft stock after year one, and give us a great return on our investment with him potentially bringing in even more physically dominant offensive linemen, year after year hopefully! 🙏🏼✨

Yeah. He's probably the most likely player to be drafted on the roster right now.
For whatever it's worth, I haven't seen a list of NFL draft prospect guards/interior linemen with Green on it.

Not sure how up to date such things are, but food for thought.

Teddy Karras and Nick Allegretti were both drafted though (and are both now NFL starters), and Green is a better player than either of them.

Someone might take a flyer on Bhebhe too. But it may be more likely that he's UFA, which does make it a little disappointing he couldn't be talked into coming back. Our WR room is really threadbare without him, that's probably the weakest position group on the team pending other senior decisions.

The big ones we're waiting on are all on defense. Carney, Perry, Gay, Woods, Eifler, Hansen, Adams and Hobbs. That would be 8 nailed-on defensive starters for us next year.

And just a side bar, Allegretti was just named one of the captains for the Chiefs

I thought Allegretti was an UDFA? No?

So one of Bill Cubit's 2016 recruiting class will play for Bret Bielema. Jake Hansen and James McCourt have the opportunity to join him.
At the risk of sounding like a total Dbag here, but no thanks to these two.
