Doesn't make any sense. Bielema asks for an increase in the salary pool, and then announces this guy as his first hire? Landing Petersen shouldn't have put any stress on the original pool whatsoever. It just feels like we were targeting some splashier candidates but whiffed. Plus Bielema said he would start with the top four positions and then utilize them to fill in the rest of the staff. Who's coming to Illinois specifically to coach under Petersen?

It could still work out. But things are pretty obviously not going to plan so far.
Just speculation from my part but maybe BB wants to keep Paterson and Bellamy on staff and that went into consideration on the OC hire?

Did you watch any 2016-18 East Carolina games?

No, and it wasn't like App St lit the world on fire except in a few games.

I'm not blown away by the hire I guess but I've rarely been rewarded by the hires I actually got excited for so maybe BB and TP will just be great. Kinda feel like I have to look at what positives there are and hope they grow into something.

Overjoyed by this hire! I was worried that we would hire someone that didn't have the slightest idea about spreading out a defense. BB said he wanted to run a balanced O and now, I believe him. We still may try to dominate with just an ugly power running game but, I now have hopes that we can pass it if we have to. Which means that we can compete with better teams. Might even mean that I can convince myself to watch a game or two this season. Seriously happy about this!!!

It looks like he has experience with both airing it out and running the football. Will be interesting to see what we run.

For me, I guess it all boils down to this:

1) Right now, we are probably top 5 in most undesirable jobs in the Power 5. As such, we probably need to overpay to get some guys here. Even then, the very top guys will have better options.

2) If he really wants to be here, BB is about as good as we could have expected.

3) This is BB’s 3rd Power 5 head coaching job. If he’s not successful, there won’t be a 4th. I would guess he is aware of that fact.

4) As such, I am going to trust that BB will hire the best staff he can.....one that he is comfortable will help him win games and be successful. If he fails, we will be doing this again in 4-5 years.

5) Same applies to players. We need to recruit guys that fit......and then DEVELOP. The 4-5 stars not going to come in waves to Champaign until we start winning.

As a result of the above, I am going to trust BBs decisions until they don’t work.

Bielema would have taken the job for 3.5, and probably less, let's not kid ourselves.

Colorado hired Karl Dorrell for 3.2 instead of Bielema.

you could be right, of course, but outside of one 10-win season, dorrell’s high watermark as a coach was a 7-win season in what is unanimously considered the weakest power five conference.

if anything, cu and uiuc both overpaid. i graded the bielama hire a “d” on another thread here, but say what you will about inheriting the program or whatever, he won 10 or more 4 of the first 6 seasons he was a coach in the conference he was hired to coach in. one of the two years he didn’t hit double digit wins he hit nine.

Looks like IW is going to get every chance to be successful as a QB.

The QB for App State threw 291 times and ran 90 times. IW issue is passing. Does Peterson have a track record of developing QBs into good passers?

Uhh, Petersen was fired at East Carolina after having one of the worst offenses in the country in 2018.

Petersen was making $200k this year at App State. Hard to imagine we're doing anything short of tripling his salary.

Judging on the initial OC hire proved to offer a misleading portrait of where Lovie's initial staff would end up. We would be wise to have the same view toward the whole in this case. We can cross any narrative arcs when we get there.

But Petersen is a baffling hire. Just a career duffer with no connection to Bielema at all. There are 20 of the same guy out there, why him?
I’m not sure this is true. Rod Smith was a pretty much Co-OC at any of his positions that mattered, and from watching his play calling I’m not shocked he wasn’t “the guy”. At least Petersen’s been calling his own plays for awhile.

Didn't expect so much doomerism when I came here tonight. Funny how everyone hated the idea of a retread as our head coach, but everyone apparently needed a retread running our offense.
Are you new here? LOL I expected nothing but doom and gloom sprinkled with the occassional orange koolaid. It's a forum requirement.
*came for the doom - stayed for the gloom*

I don't mind the hire at all. The guy has had success almost everywhere he has gone but East Carolina. Most forget East Carolina went to the American Conference from CUSA in 2014. East Carolina had some horrendous teams during the years Petersen was OC/QB coach. They also had to play catch up a ton. During the 2017 season, the defense gave up 52+ points in 6 of the 12 games.

Throwing in only the stops where he was OC/QB coach together at Minnesota, Marshall, Louisiana Tech, ECU and Appalachian St the teams went 7-3 in Bowl games. During the same time Illinois was 2-4 in Bowl Games and also lost to the Louisiana Tech team that Petersen was coaching on.

We need to play to the strength of our O-Line and running game next year. Think is a solid hire for what we have to work with. Might not be a flashy name, but when has that worked for us lately? If anything, am glad they hired a guy who has a ton of experience being an OC and QB coach at the same time. Consistent QB play has been our Kryptonite for many years now.

Petersen was an analyst on the Mizzou staff last year, with Derek Dooley.

But in terms of his history as a proper playcalling OC, here it is, using SP+

Appalachian State
2020 - 36th

East Carolina
2018 - 199th - Scottie Montgomery fired
2017 - 77th
2016 - 80th

Louisiana Tech
2015 - 32nd
2014 - 77th
2013 - 115th

Remember when we lost to Louisiana Tech in the Heart of Dallas Bowl? He was the OC.
I remember the transfer from Illinois (Bates) totally taken over the game lol..

At OC it really, really can. Rod Smith is objectively higher regarded in the profession than Tony Petersen is.

Now, Petersen is no Miles Smith. He's not Hardy Nickerson. He's a grizzled career guy, he's qualified for the job. We can assess the staff when it's complete.

But what is objective fact right now is that Bielema and Petersen are now making salaries for Illinois football that outstrip their market values by leaps and bounds. I tire of being taken for a sucker.
I feel ya But let's give it a chance and see how it goes.. Hopefully we will be pleasantly surprised.
