Did you watch any 2016-18 East Carolina games?I'm optimistic about the Peterson hire. I watched about 4 App State games and if we run something similar to that scheme I think IW can excel.

Just speculation from my part but maybe BB wants to keep Paterson and Bellamy on staff and that went into consideration on the OC hire?Doesn't make any sense. Bielema asks for an increase in the salary pool, and then announces this guy as his first hire? Landing Petersen shouldn't have put any stress on the original pool whatsoever. It just feels like we were targeting some splashier candidates but whiffed. Plus Bielema said he would start with the top four positions and then utilize them to fill in the rest of the staff. Who's coming to Illinois specifically to coach under Petersen?
It could still work out. But things are pretty obviously not going to plan so far.

Overjoyed by this hire! I was worried that we would hire someone that didn't have the slightest idea about spreading out a defense. BB said he wanted to run a balanced O and now, I believe him. We still may try to dominate with just an ugly power running game but, I now have hopes that we can pass it if we have to. Which means that we can compete with better teams. Might even mean that I can convince myself to watch a game or two this season. Seriously happy about this!!!
Just a career duffer
Bielema would have taken the job for 3.5, and probably less, let's not kid ourselves.
Colorado hired Karl Dorrell for 3.2 instead of Bielema.
Famous last words. Can’t be worse than what we have had!
Looks like IW is going to get every chance to be successful as a QB.
Shocking it wasn’t an NFL guyYes there are other options. Some coming from the nfl ranks...
Was this insider knowledge? The OC will be one of three names. Derek Dooley, Dan Enos or Mark Helfrich. Do I know which one? Maybe. And if I recall correctly, Bielema stated he wanted to have his staff ready to go first week of January. Sounds like some announcements this week
TouchéShocking it wasn’t an NFL guy
I’m not sure this is true. Rod Smith was a pretty much Co-OC at any of his positions that mattered, and from watching his play calling I’m not shocked he wasn’t “the guy”. At least Petersen’s been calling his own plays for awhile.Uhh, Petersen was fired at East Carolina after having one of the worst offenses in the country in 2018.
Petersen was making $200k this year at App State. Hard to imagine we're doing anything short of tripling his salary.
Judging on the initial OC hire proved to offer a misleading portrait of where Lovie's initial staff would end up. We would be wise to have the same view toward the whole in this case. We can cross any narrative arcs when we get there.
But Petersen is a baffling hire. Just a career duffer with no connection to Bielema at all. There are 20 of the same guy out there, why him?
It's obvious we should fire Josh W. and hire gritty as our AD.Bielema would have taken the job for 3.5, and probably less, let's not kid ourselves.

Are you new here? LOL I expected nothing but doom and gloom sprinkled with the occassional orange koolaid. It's a forum requirement.Didn't expect so much doomerism when I came here tonight. Funny how everyone hated the idea of a retread as our head coach, but everyone apparently needed a retread running our offense.
Weird!!! Looks like he had offense rolling..App State fans sure seem happy he is gone...
I remember the transfer from Illinois (Bates) totally taken over the game lol..Petersen was an analyst on the Mizzou staff last year, with Derek Dooley.
But in terms of his history as a proper playcalling OC, here it is, using SP+
Appalachian State
2020 - 36th
East Carolina
2018 - 199th - Scottie Montgomery fired
2017 - 77th
2016 - 80th
Louisiana Tech
2015 - 32nd
2014 - 77th
2013 - 115th
Remember when we lost to Louisiana Tech in the Heart of Dallas Bowl? He was the OC.
I feel ya But let's give it a chance and see how it goes.. Hopefully we will be pleasantly surprised. At OC it really, really can. Rod Smith is objectively higher regarded in the profession than Tony Petersen is.
Now, Petersen is no Miles Smith. He's not Hardy Nickerson. He's a grizzled career guy, he's qualified for the job. We can assess the staff when it's complete.
But what is objective fact right now is that Bielema and Petersen are now making salaries for Illinois football that outstrip their market values by leaps and bounds. I tire of being taken for a sucker.
