At this point....is it a hot take to suggest granny style FT's??

Why Ayo with one shot in 2nd half?
I am totally good with Ayo not pressing as he just looked off. The free throws are a mess and have been all year. We loose games like that in the tournament and Kofi can’t play at the end of games if he can’t at least split a pair. He went 0-7 I think?

The ugliest spread cover (-7.5) you’ll ever see. A decent free throw performance and that’s a 15 point win. On to the next.

Damonte and Trent deserve their props for digging in on defense at the end, but the freshman trio of Curbelo/Miller/Hawkins won us this game with an absolutely clutch stretch in the middle of the second half.

Not even trying to be hyperbolic, but by the time Curbelo is done here I wouldn't be surprised to see him win B1G POY/1st team All American/Nat'l POY type honors. He's that good.

This team will lose its final game of the season because of free throw shooting.

I understand that it's different to shoot free throws in the game. But I still shoot 80 percent and I wasn't very good in my career of High School and low level college. It's crazy to shoot 9-22 as a team.

The Illini who don't wind up playing professionally one day sure have a bright future in the bricklayer's union, judging by our abysmal team free throw shooting. Even our guards struggle at the line.

I think I've been saying this for the last two weeks and three days isn't going to cut it. More like 10 days and twice on Sunday.
Is it no longer acceptable in coaching, when performance is lacking, to prescribe suicides after practice until stomachs are emptied? Man, I miss the good old days. People respond to incentives, as the economists observe.

Its good to get a relatively controlled win with such a terrible shooting performance all around and the other team shoots above their average. Its the sign of a good team.

Purdue wasn’t above their average. Let’s not pretend they played good. They shot 39% for the game (IL was 48%)and 7/12 from the line and had 14 turnovers.

We played down to their level. This was another Ohio game at home. If we played an upper level Big 10 team this would have been a loss. When you get up 10+ in the 1st half against a bad team at home, you can’t let them back in the game with your own mistakes. I think we are a good team that has some inexplicable stretches of bad play.

Really happy with another big ten win. And, I admit, I am very hard on this team. But it is because I believe we have yet to see what this team is truly capable of. We've seen flashes, but I have been disappointed with the overall play given the talent we have. Another game where we come out flat to start both halves. Ayo with 1 shot in the second half? Hawkins gives some great energy in the first half, gets pulled and doesn't play another minute in the half? He hits a 3 early in the 2nd half, immediately gets yanked and doesn't play another minute (I don't believe anyway)? What is going on? Our mental approach, preparedness and in game decisions have been less than satisfying to put it mildly. And the free throws and frustrating turnovers are completely mental lapses that great teams do not consistently make like we have all year. Anyway, it's better than a loss and Curbelo is a lock for Freshman of the year if he continues his playmaking. Kofi shows flashes and I am definitely glad he is on our side. Trent is a great defender and probably saved the game for us late with a couple steals, but man I'm just waiting for us to start firing on all cylinders. Hopefully that happens against NW.

Surely there are reasons for Kofi's missed free throws. Please take a serious look at his form and make suggestions/adjustments.

Ayo seemed low energy in this one, and wasn't given the ball late...agreed he seemed under the weather,.

I agree....and if he gets the 3 ball going it would go from being a distinct possibility to "likely" as far as first team BIG/BIGPOY contention IMHO

Big men like him always seem to struggle at the line Or perhaps my memory is selective.

but not just shooting with the same bad techniques. does no one put their dominant forefoot on the nail in the floor (that's dead center) to line up each and every time? I noticed many of our players are in bad position when they step up to the line.

I'm willing to think the layoff of a week and New Year's had a little to do with the ft's.

Need his defense, not a good trade-off and should notm(no excuse for 0-7 and this can be taught/learned), but we need him in there.
