Illinois 66, Purdue 58 Postgame

At this point....is it a hot take to suggest granny style FT's??

Rick Barry shot 90% from the line that way. I remember watching him against the Bulls in Chicago Stadium - that guy was smooooth.

Purdue wasn’t above their average. Let’s not pretend they played good. They shot 39% for the game (IL was 48%)and 7/12 from the line and had 14 turnovers.

We played down to their level. This was another Ohio game at home. If we played an upper level Big 10 team this would have been a loss. When you get up 10+ in the 1st half against a bad team at home, you can’t let them back in the game with your own mistakes. I think we are a good team that has some inexplicable stretches of bad play.
Illin did play good D overall. Purdue missed a couple open shots, but very few shots were uncontested.

A win is a win, but I'll save everyone else time: MAKE YOUR FREE THROWS!

Came here to say this. Shoot FTs semi-competently, and we win without a sweat and probably even avoid one of those runs. However, I’ll take the win happily! Three straight, and absolutely zero reason this team can’t win every game going into the Iowa game. Optimist? Of course. But not out of possibility!

On to a very good NU team that will be more than ready for us.

Ok I may be going crazy but it seems every team we play set better ball screens than we do and get easier open looks than we do. Anybody can tell me why that is, the offense, players, or what?

This team will lose its final game of the season because of free throw shooting.

I understand that it's different to shoot free throws in the game. But I still shoot 80 percent and I wasn't very good in my career of High School and low level college. It's crazy to shoot 9-22 as a team.
If you subtract Kofi’s 0/6 we were still lousy. It’s good that Giorgi didn’t have any but maybe tonite he would have raised the average by going 50%.

You know if DMW and Trent come back next year we could be very good. Covid will help Hamlin a ton as he will only be a Soph and I like Hawkins a lot.

you would have:

Trent
DMW
Miller
Curbello
GB
Hawkins
Hamlin
(And maybe something out of one of the transfers, BBV or even Goode)

I would not think Trent or DMW will be major overseas targets, so how knows maybe they will?

Our guards go to point of attack, before our bigs are set. Happened repeatedly tonight. I do not get it. It's on tape and I'm sure the coaches are harping on it. Wait for it, wait for it! Go. 😂

Surely there are reasons for Kofi's missed free throws. Please take a serious look at his form and make suggestions/adjustments.
Mental. Gotta be in his head at this point. If it continues Underwood will need to decide whether it’s worth it to have him in during a close game. I think the best strategy is Kofi plays most of each half till the team gets in the bonus, then you think about pulling him and playing Giorgi at the 5 so teams can’t hack him on the 1-1

Quick hits:
1) free throws are going to kill us. We already lost mizz because of it, why can't we get that % up?! What is going on...is it a case of the yips?!
2) Hawkins, loved his energy and toughness. He made some key plays and is developing nicely. As a Jr/Sr he will be an impact player. Likely 2 or 3rd team all B1G
3) where is Ayo? I know he isn't one to force action, but there were times we needed him to step up and he didn't...I'm thinking about that terrible turnover he had in the second half where he went up and had a clean shot, but decided to pass instead. He is our leader and sometimes initiating action is needed. I get taking what the defense gives you, but come on, sub-20 points is not what we need from him.
4) thought our rebounding was better, more bodies and toughness around the rim

Overall, a win, but I wouldn't say it was a good win. Should've won by more and had more control of the entire game, not just parts of the game. We play like this against top 5 team, we will lose.

Unfortunately, albeit with far fewer attempts, Giorgi has a worse % than Kofi.

What a weird game. I wonder how many times it’s happened that a team gives up the first 16 points of the 2nd half and still wins? Nice to win a game where Ayo is basically a non-factor offenseively.

I mentioned it earlier, I sure hope they come back. 1.Our recruiting class for 2021 is horrible, thus far, Leadership, and heck skill. Would love it!!

All the, "Start Curbelo" people are gonna say they know better than him even after seeing this:

Curbelo statement on coming off the bench

He’s smart enough to not create controversy within the team and say he needs to start. That’s all that PC answer was.

His real thoughts are probably the same as every other player on the team “I want to play 40 min a game”.

It was a silly question from Werner. He was fishing for something controversial and Curbelo didn’t take the bait.

I don't know what to do with this comment. The best guard in the country scores 30+ three straight B1G games, then goes for a "measly" 12/5/3.....and gets called out? For scoring less than 20?

It seemed we forgot that games are 40 minutes and we got caught looking ahead to NW at halftime. Can't do that in this league.

Giorgi is shooting FTs at 42% on the year.

He's a freshman coming off the bench to spark his team and play 20+ minutes per game!! He's absolutely not starting over Trent, DMFW, or Ayo and suggesting it is worse than last years "start Alan Griffin over DMFW" hot takes. Curbelo starting doesn't solve any of our current issues....effort, turnovers, and FT shooting.

Enjoy his freshman electricity off the bench and imagine him with 20 more lbs. and sleep tight!!

Giorgi is 5/12.
Kofi is 38/70.

I’ll take my chances with Giorgi. Mainly because teams won’t be intentionally hacking him with that small of sample size. I doubt they would at least.

Whereas Kofi is just about 50% now with a ton of attempts, so I could def see teams start to intentionally foul him when it’s the 1-1 or even double bonus
