Illinois 66, Purdue 58 Postgame

He's a freshman coming off the bench to spark his team and play 20+ minutes per game!! He's absolutely not starting over Trent, DMFW, or Ayo and suggesting it is worse than last years "start Alan Griffin over DMFW" hot takes. Curbelo starting doesn't solve any of our current issues....effort, turnovers, and FT shooting.

Enjoy his freshman electricity off the bench and imagine him with 20 more lbs. and sleep tight!!
Why would you not start him over Miller?

Aparently free throws ain't free. We're payin' a hefty f@#kin fee.

Imagine the meltdown on this board if we were losing to Purdue by less than double digits the entire last five minutes, they couldn't hit the ocean with a free throw all night, and we only commit 2 fouls that whole time. Interesting coaching from Painter tonight.

There’s a lot to think about with that. We don’t know the guys personalities at all. We can tell it obviously doesn’t matter to Andre to come off the bench. It might Adam.

There is also the issue of recruiting Chicago and believe the players are watching Adam this year.

I agree. As poor as The Beloved were shooting from the stripe, you would think stopping the clock and putting them on the line is a good plan.

A few reasons, not the least of which is that Miller graded out defensively against Indiana better than anyone. As a freshman....he graded out better than two of the best B1G defenders, Trent and DMFW.
It also probably creates a size/mismatch issue with another small PG.

The start Curbelo argument is only valid if you have serious deficiencies in your starting lineup. We're not even close to that. Especially defensively.
And as BU keeps repeating...it doesn't matter. It only matters to fans.

Thought this same thing. Why did he give up so easily? Very odd.

But, but, but, BU got out coached!! I read it right here on the game thread!

but not just shooting with the same bad techniques. does no one put their dominant forefoot on the nail in the floor (that's dead center) to line up each and every time? I noticed many of our players are in bad position when they step up to the line.
There are numerous poor free throw shooting methods and variants that lead to the failures of this team at the line. Hard to believe they have no access or can't get proper support to improve drastically in a short period. It can be done.

I don't know what to do with this comment. The best guard in the country scores 30+ three straight B1G games, then goes for a "measly" 12/5/3.....and gets called out? For scoring less than 20?
I think many here were wondering why Ayo only took 1 shot in the 2nd half, especially when Purdue went on a 19 to 0 run. It is just odd that your best player, who the team relies upon, shot only once in the 2nd half. We won anyway, but the start of the 2nd half was not good for us.

Nah, what concerns me is the cold starts to the game and the second half when he was on the bench.

The guys who he could play over were playing well: Coleman, Da'monte, Giorgi. So who's minutes do you feel he should've taken? Underwood noted Coleman had a good practice. As I stated before, "At some point, you need a tight rotation for guys to get comfortable.". Gotta earn your minutes.

what an odd game by Ayo tonight, 12 points in the first half, out running the break looking like a smooth 20+ game and he just went truly silent on the offense side. Defensive effort was there, but hands on knees sucking wind in the corner. Like others have said, he did look like he was sick and pushing through.

far be it from me to argue with a fairly comfortable win despite god awful free throw shooting and I do appreciate letting the game flow. but even late when the team couldn't make any free throws he was not demanding the ball. very odd.

Kofi shot 68% last year. You don't just forget how to shoot free throws. This team is just not fully mentally locked in and I really don't understand why. All they need to do is look back over the past 10-15 years. There should be a chip as big as a boulder on their collective shoulders but we sure haven't seen it thus far.

I would suspect its a bit harder to be locked in all the time this year versus last? Probably a lot of this going on across CBB. most of the b10 teams ive seen multilple times have looked great one day and ok/worse the next. It's probably a tough year for these guys, as they are 18-22 yr old kids in a pandemic, not allowed to have a social life, not travelling to see their families, no classroom learning so routines are way off, etc etc

Our Ft shooting is 1% worse than last year on the year coming into this game.

Mike LaTulip sums it up very well. 4-1 to start the B1G season...why on earth would you shake up this lineup?

I know that quite a bit has been made about the free throw shooting and rightly so (not just for this game either). Was anyone else concerned that DMW's 3 point shooting was below his season average? I suspect he will make all of them next game..... just having an off night I suppose.
Hawkins didn't miss a three tonight. Time to make a switch in the starting lineup?
