Deon Thomas article

I wonder if he could have filed a law suit against Iowa?
He did, but it was thrown out. One-party recording was legal in Iowa and, though incredibly sleazy, there's no law against sending a recording to the NCAA. Case was dismissed for failure to state a claim. Here's the appellate decision affirming that decision.

I know I am a bulletin board newbie, but am I missing something? What hasn‘t Underwood called? How could Thomas be anything but an asset to the coaching staff?

He doesn’t want to at the moment. Doesn’t want the time commitment of coaching to pull him away from his family, that’s why he got out at UIC.

This is a man who’s just wired differently. He basically says that in the article when he talks about his nba vs euroleague opportunities.

He does currently help the University with fundraising and such.

From the article:

”He did leave the door cracked open, though, for one job in particular.

“It would have to be the right situation,” Thomas said. “If Brad Underwood called me, I would run to Brad Underwood in a heartbeat.”

If/when Antigua leaves, this would be a nice fit.

I learned a lot from that article. The most significant aspect was the fact that Deon could have played anywhere else. Even back then there were few players, especially of his caliber, that would have stayed loyal to their commitment. What an asset Deon is to his university, to society, and more importantly to his family. It's a shame there aren't more like him these days.

Yes, I'm not sure if was the terrible situation he was thrust into before he even turned 20 that forced him into early maturity, but Deon truly embodies a great athlete who has the right perspective on what's important and an appreciation for the world beyond the basketball court.

I watched an Illini Classic on BTN yesterday from 1990 I think against LSU ....Dale Brown was the coach and he had a soph named Shaq...lol
Deon was playing along with the following :
Scott pierce
Tom Michael
Larry Smith
Rennie Cleamons
Tim Geers
Andy Kaufman
Andy Knedi
I think I'm forgetting some but , we won 102-96....is this the fabled Cleamons dunk game ? I didn't see it but, Larry Smith skied over Shaq for a semi-dunk...
Fast paced game , very physical and we played some zone also...
The good ole days of Lou and the Illini.....

100%. Prior to this article I thought of him as a good former player and insightful announcer. Now I'll add 'good human being' to that list.

Larry Smith
Underrated player. As a junior, led the Flying Illini in assists and stepped up and started when Gill got hurt. Had to sit out a year for academics. Then had a nice senior season for the first Tourney ineligible team, 13 pts/g and 2nd in the Big 10 in assists/g. He was big for a point guard (back then) at 6'4", could run and dish. Had some trouble with the law after college, but should probably be better remembered by Illini fans.
