I don't see how they can keep it in Ireland, especially with an announcement today. It was a questionable decision, at best, when it was made. Giving up a conference home game rarely makes sense.

It is a great read. Also, if you watch the Melvin Gordon highlight video, not a red-letter day for a Zook recruiting miss, Corey Cooper. He looked awful trying to tackle Gordon on several of his long runs and gets called out by the announcers (and his coaches) for it on 1 of them.
FBS record in 3 Qrts. When the commentary (think that was the long time OSU linebacker Spielmen?) said something along the lines of how demoralizing it is for someone to hang 400 rushing yards on you, I automatically felt bad and a little better about what Northwestern did to us...

When your not making a whole lot of in stadium money, yes it makes a lot of sense. Just the fact it is in Ireland bumps it to a national story.

I don't know. I think when you're bad and you schedule something like this, it's a sideshow act. When you're good and you schedule something like this, it's for national spotlight. I think JW was still thinking last season was going to be the big breakthrough and having this week 0 game with assumed momentum was a way to kinda break into the spotlight. Obviously the opposite happened and Covid. I'm expecting it to be moved back to Champaign and that all involved will be very happy about that.

if they are announcing something today already, it means they are postponing it.

To get up there and say " we are still going to try to get this done, even though advance ticket sales are WAY WAY OFF projections ,and the UK is in the midst of a total shutdown" , makes them look terribly stupid.

No way BB wants his first game to be intertwined with all the other crap that gets lumped in with over seas travel . He has to be lobbying JW to postpone or cancel this .

Kevin Warren was made to look dumb last August, and I cant believe he makes that mistake twice.

If you believe your going to embarrass yourself on the field then yes it is totally a sideshow act. For this specific team, it will be a week 0 game with a new HC. That will give us more national coverage than if it was just another game at home. If we look good, and actually win, which is possible, than our highlights will be on every sports media platform. That is a great recruiting tool

You never schedule something like this thinking about the negative, sideshow act, possibility, and really that's more about the perception outside your program and fanbase, never how you would actually think of yourself. Assuming it stays week 0, you're still going to get the same coverage. It's just in a far more comfortable environment and situation, especially for a brand new coach and staff.

I disagree that a game in Champaign is going to get the same coverage as a game in Ireland 100%

I guess what do you mean by coverage? It's going to be on national tv regardless. You think our highlights will be shown strictly because it's in Ireland? I think the date of the game is more important than location. There's very few, if any, other FBS games that day. Where it's play is irrelevant outside of random CFB fans saying, "why is Nebraska playing Illinois in Ireland?" I guess game time could be the variable. Some NFL London games were played in the morning, but that would make having a home game actually better, as it can be played at night.

I mean by the producers of cbs sports looking at a game between two bottom feeders in the B1G and believing no one cares outside of those perspective fan bases. Now have the game in Ireland That is a very rare occurrence. This has to have some coverage
Yes I believe rare instances in the world get more coverage and draw more attention. It just so happens the rare instance in this event is a game being played in Ireland. That draws more coverage and draws more attention.

I just don't think it really matters to the viewers or really much to the broadcasters. The only thing to sell with these teams is that there is a game. Both teams were bad last year. Nobody really cares. The majority of CFB fans won't even know it's in Ireland until they turn it on. Its a fun little gimmick for the players, schools, and for the few fans that can travel for it.

If this was like #19 Nebraska and #25 Illinois or something like that, then yeah, that little extra from playing in Ireland would give it a good boost, but it's not.

I have no idea what to predict. I mean I know what I WANT to predict but I don't know what I think is realistic. I think the first 3 games are key. None are for sure wins, but I don't think they're for sure losses either. Win 2 and we might be on to something. Have to win at least 1 of them. Start 0-3 and uh oh. Start 3-0 and we're cooking.

Being week 0, there are enough starved football fans that will tune in, regardless of location. As long as it stays week 0, and not got moved into mid October/November.

Just play the game in at WDW and have a camera inside / outside Ragland Road in Disney Springs and nobody will know. Save on airfare costs and sleep issues.

Looking at the schedule. The first half of the season is where we'd need to win games. No game that we shouldn't compete in. Back half is definitely tougher. All those teams besides Rutgers *should* be better than us.

I disagree. I believe playing a game in Ireland adds something regardless. You don't. That's fine
I hope the game is played in Ireland, and we can keep a tally how many times that is mentioned and determine whether or not the media outlets think it is a sell in itself

That is not the point I am making. Will they get play considering it is week 0? Yes. Will there be more play if it is in Ireland? Yes

hopefully the game in Dublin is moved back to Champaign where it belongs. Dumb move by Wonder Boy Whitman to agree to that nonsense. and now if the game is played August 28, week zero, that is the best matchup that weekend. maybe get on national TV, good exposure for start of Bielema Era against a team that is ripe to be defeated again. Beat Nebraska.
Why a dumb move? National exposure for a dumpster fire program doesn’t sound dumb to me. And what’s with the “Wonder Boy”?

giving up a home game to play 3000 miles away is dumb. not as dumb as St. Guenther playing and losing to Missouri 4 years in a row in St. Louis
