Illinois 77, Nebraska 72 OT Postgame

I have to give it up for Kofi. He's definitely made huge strides in figuring out how to play without getting fouls. It seems like this has just come along in the 2nd half of the season. IIRC he finished with 39mins and 2 fouls.. we don't win without him\Ayo in the game.

This win dropped us from #5 to #9 on Torvik.
Deserved. They had all the attention tonight being the only top 10 team playing. Nobody came away impressed. The goal is a conference championship, they won and kept that hope alive, but saying that the eye test wasn't anything short of terrible... wouldn't be an honest assessment. Take the win, move on, a bunch of significant games forthcoming.

he's a different player this year. Huge development on Kofi

When Georgi comes in for Kofi, it feels like they are trying to run the same offense, but that's just not his game and he ends up forcing more than he needs to. I wish he would look for the double team and pass it out for a 3. More often he tries to force something and either ends up taking a horrible shot or a turnover. Then he gets frustrated and make silly fouls on defense.

Tonight in the first half, I don't what he was doing, but a guy was running across the lane and Georgi just cross checked him. BOOM foul.. and the coach pulled him immediately.

I don't know what the answer is, but he needs to figure out how to not hurt the team when he comes in.
He did cross check him, but he is the only one that was called for that all night. Kofi did it 4 or 5 times and so did Nebraska's center.

They won. And behind Iowa now who is ranked 120 on defense?

yeah but iowa is far and away teh etter offense. Going by kenpom their offense is truly exceptional. Only 1 team had a better OEFF in the last 5 years, and 3 teams in the last 10.

They have us by 9 points on O, we have them by like 9ish points on D. Overall efficiency margin goes to them by like .08 points. Its razor close

Horrible effort horrible coaching horrible preparation the boys did not look like they were ready for a game at the D1 level tonight they got lucky to win that game. Absolutely horrible coaching substitutions From the Bench! I sure hope Kofis foot is feeling better, seemed underdressed towards the end of the game with his big foot

Deep breath. We, somehow, survived? Thank you, Ayo.

Kofi tweaking his knee made me wince. Majorly relieved to see him finish the game.

The defensive combo by Frazier and Miller was spectacular in the second half. I’ll give Miller a bit of slack on a couple of those gambles. Great coaching moments.

DMFW lived up to his moniker tonight. An elite annoyance to other teams. I had major flashbacks to Lucas Johnson tonight. It was beautiful.

Ok fair. It’s just frustrating to see. You beat Iowa and then don’t lose but Iowa jumps you.

Interesting....seven pages of posts after a very close game and though I have read most (but not all), I have not seen one complaint about the officiating. Obviously, I either have reading comprehension problems or eyesight is horrible. But not one, nor can I think of any. May be a first for a B1G road game. But it is likely Nebraska fans are upset as they did not seem to get the home court calls afforded for the last 100 years. B1G Supervisor of Officials should be proud. But of course, it was the #2 team in the league at #14 (on a 25 game losing streak), so there's that....protect the cash cow.

Paducah, Ky

LINCOLN, Neb. — Illinois’ Ayo Dosunmu had a conversation with himself after he missed a free throw and Nebraska hit a 3-pointer to take a five-point lead with under four minutes left in regulation time.
“I told myself it was time to lock in,” he said. “Trust in yourself. Believe your instincts. You got this. Let’s try to will my team to victory.”
Dosunmu did just that Friday night.

The star guard scored the last 10 points in regulation for Illinois and the first five in overtime, allowing the sixth-ranked Fighting Illini to turn back Nebraska’s upset bid 77-72.

Nebraska called a timeout and had a chance to win it on a final shot in regulation. McGowens got hung up between Trent Frazier and Dosunmu and couldn’t get off a decent shot, with Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg throwing his facemask to the floor in frustration.

We are really lucky to have both Ayo and Kofi. I think sometimes Ayo’s greatness lets us take Kofi for granted. Not sure we have ever had a player like him before.

As it should...we were playing against the worst team in the B1G and just barely eeked by. Granted I think they played better than they normally do and probably were gunning for the Illini, but ultimately ran out of steam.
That’s the problem with ratings based purely on data. Last night they were NOT the worst team in the BIG. They may have the worst record in the BIG, but last night they could have beaten many of the BIG teams.

This is on the coaching staff.

Curbelo is going to the NBA, Grandison is our m v p, Ayo plays hero ball, What is wrong with Kofi, Giorgi is horrible. These are all previous posts on this forum? They had a bad game, which they managed somehow to win. Enjoy the ride people, they are a bright spot in a dismal year.
