Illinois 77, Nebraska 72 OT Postgame

well, I call BS on that. When Kofi came in BU talked about how it was up BU to come up with schemes to get Giorgi touches and points. They haven't got it figured out yet and it's unfortunate. Giorgi's being asked to be a player he isn't. I don't think it's so much about acceptance as ability. Happens with a lot of guys where coaches and fans think they can change their game.
Well it's either he hasn't figured it in two years or it's that he isn't able to adjust to playing behind Kofi. I love Giorgi, but this year has been riddled with foul-ridden games and clear frustration. It's not hard to spot this.

This win dropped us from #5 to #9 on Torvik.
As it should...we were playing against the worst team in the B1G and just barely eeked by. Granted I think they played better than they normally do and probably were gunning for the Illini, but ultimately ran out of steam.

Curbelo is the X factor on the scouting report because the defense can't really prepare for him. He keeps them guessing and forces a reaction which opens up the floor.

Tonight was just not a good night for him. I told my brother that there are 3 things he tends to do every game.
1. Reach in and make a silly foul
2. Step out on the side
3. Dribble it off his foot

Maybe that is a scouting report LOL

Big win on the road! Ayo is a beast! Ice water in his veins! King Kofi is a double double machine!

Good at making turnovers, yes.
He's amont the conf leaders in A/TO ratio in conference play and 2nd in asists.

His A/TO is 2.1, which is good.

He's a good player whether you want to admit it or not. He hurt us today, but most games he is a net positive even with a couple mistakes.

Please don't tell me how good Curbelo is. Right now he is a liability. He makes the same mistakes game after game after game. That does not tell me he has such a high BB IQ.
Ik curbelo is doing good for Illinois I’m saying for the future to improve his game, if he develops even a 35% from 3 and with a descent big he could be incredible

Much respect for Nebraska they played hard and almost pulled it out. Likely deserved to win

we have to have a better offense to run when the pass the ball around until someone jacks up a three doesn’t work or the high screen and roll with Kofi and Ayo is cut off- it seems those are only two options anymore

Also remember he came in after our bad start down 9-0...and immediately sparked the offense with a couple of passes.

We can all spot this. But there's a big difference between "not accepting his role" and "not being able to succeed in a new role"

His assist/TO ratio is almost equal to DWill's freshman year.

You are really comparing DWill to Curbelo. DWill always looked like he knew how to play the game. Curbelo looks like he is playing street ball. I don't recall DWill making so many dumb turnovers, being out of control and on the floor, or throwing up so many circus shots. I would think by now there would be some improvement.

He's just a freshman...averaging 8pts and 5 assists per game. You have to take the good with the bad if you are going to give freshmen significant minutes.
Ace was a nightmare on defense to start the year. Look at where he is now.

We will remember Curbelo for a long time after he's done here. Give him a hot minute.
Agreed. Freshmen around the country are really struggling, as evidenced by some of the blue bloods, who rely on one and dones, being awful. There was a very minimal preconference season, teams didn't have their 5+ cupcakes built into that portion of the schedule...they were thrown right into the fire. This will pay dividends, but it probably won't be until next year. They just have to roll with it now.

Does anyone else notice that when Ayo shoots a running teardrop about 80% of the time he comes up short? Of course I am not plotting this, but just noticing the tendency. Got to shoot at a point on the far side of the rim I would think. It natural to figure that when you are running at the basket, you need to take something off, but he is taking off too much consistently. That shot will likely be a requirement for his success goals in the NBA. And if he can ever learn to elevate and release from over his head from 27 feet, he could be and all-star....but that is not his game and would take a huge time commitment.

But.............he sure is one hell of a baller now. He makes shooting layups look easy, but there is a huge difference in his strength to finish at the rim with bodies hanging on and his frosh year. An Illini all-time great....and in fact, Illini have never had another player on the roster like him....no offense to Williams...Deron and HRF....who had different skills.

Game...not pretty.

Season...not over.

Ayo hero ball for the last 10 minutes not withstanding, the offense tonight wasn't up to par with season averages, and they let Nebraska hang around with their own offense. Kofi was actually very good on both ends of the court, ran out of gas a bit at the end, particularly on FTs. Miller and Hawkins contributed well offensively and defensively, and DMW put in a full night's work defensively with Frazier. Would have been a little easier had Trent hit a few more shots or Ayo/Kofi hit a couple front ends of FTs, but the win is a B-level win anyway.

Curbelo with a second straight subpar game, but he'll have some time to sort himself out. The team overall started slow, which was expected with the 6 day layoff while Nebraska was playing their 4th game in the stretch. The disappointment was midway through the second half when they just couldn't put Nebraska away thanks to a lacking rebounding effort and laziness with the ball on offense, just a lack of urgency. I get Nebraska isn't exactly Michigan, but gotta play with the same intensity every game, not just for the highlights.
