Seriously. That's egregious.
If BU isn't on there, then Few and Drew shouldn't be either. I get it, we were preseason top 10 so the product is meeting expectations. I'm ok with that rationale, as long as Baylor and Gonzaga are being graded similarly....which apparently they aren't.

I agree Brad should be on the list, but what Few and Drew have done so far is go undefeated. Those teams have been roundly praised by the media all season, but continue to show up and win.
We’ve had a couple “easy” games be anything but, and lost a couple of games we had no business losing. I think that is the difference.

Don't get me wrong, I (somewhat) agree with you that the team may not have played lights out consistently enough to make him a contender (he should still be a candidate though, as you said). That said, those teams have gone undefeated with SOS's that are pitiful compared to ours. Both are sub 3 according to Basketball Reference, whereas we are 11.6 (only Ohio State is higher -- 11.7 -- in the top 5). It's a lot easier to go undefeated when you only have to get up for a big time game every 3-4 weeks (or, in Gonzaga's case, be on point for the first 1.5 months and then put it in cruise control).

It's a massive bummer the Gonzaga-Baylor game was cancelled. That would've been an awesome game and told us a lot about how those two stack up.

Guessing Battle or Anderson would have been leaders in 88-89 and would bet the team would have had more even with Ayo now making significant dunks. Did see that Anderson had 32 blocks and Hamilton 31 blocks and Kofi currently 32 with Giorgi second with 7. Team “Flying Illini” great stats but no one like Kofi.

I doubt Battle or Anderson led the entire country in dunks.

Based on what?

Based on the fact that dunk leaders have been big men:

2017-18 KU's Udoka Azubuike117
2016-17 UCF's Tacko Fall105
2016-17 UK's Bam Adebayo101
2016-17 FGCU's Demetris Morant97
2017-18 Duke's Marvin Bagley96
2011-12 UK's Anthony Davis87
2017-18 Wake Forest's Doral Moore87

And back in the day, big men dunked more.

I'll say it again, Curbelo will be the next Illini to notch a triple-double. In fact, I think he may have 2 or 3 before it is all said and done. That bodes well for him, as does the quality of the team around him.
Did you mean the next to record the feat, or the next Illini to do it after Ayo does it again?

Yeah, I thought you may have had data from those years.

Battle shot 60% in 88-89, so I'm guessing he did throw it down quit a bit. Shaq shot only 62% his sophomore year and I'm not sure he did anything but dunk.
I wish I had that Flying Illini season on DVD.

Quentin Grimes and the win over Texas Tech mostly.
Houston is basically a poor man's Gonzaga, blowing out almost everyone they play in a better conference, but with more losses. By adjusted efficiency they are a top 10 team, by strength of record they're closer to 25th than 10th. I suspect come tournament time they'll be underseeded to their talent but overseeded to their resume. Like a low-end 3 seed, assuming they win their conference tourney. Another loss or two they're probably looking at a 4/5 seed.

Ayo's 2 career triple-doubles are only exceeded by Magic's 8 and Draymond Green's 3 (career).

wow, just thinking how rare a year like this is. 1989. 2005, & 2021 Illini Basketball - 1985 Bears Football & 2007 Colts - ST Louis Cardinals 1982,2006 & 2011. That is 8 happy years in a 56 year old sports fans life

I don't know how else to say this, but... Magic Johnson was, you know... really good.
Like Larry Bird, but more athletic.
