kudos to BU/assistance for that defensive gameplan. Kudos to the team for executing it and the shots they were making all night. Just loved being proved wrong here! Well done guys! Decent chance we'll see them again in the BTT - that's gonna be epic. Although, at this point, i'd rather see MSU and exact some revenge.

This moment on a poster please.
This team is at that moment in time that few coaches have gotten to see up close. A special team that comes together for a greater cause than the game, and puts it all together at the right time of the year. The right time of the year is at the end. This could be REALLY REALLY special in a about a month if we rebound as hard as we did last night, take care of the ball, and play with the heart of a lion.....I'm giddy thinking about it.

great pic. What was that technical from, anyway? Did Howard say something to the refs?

looks like howard did say something, but they never talked about what (were discussing some random topic unrelated to the game). he was still hot after they called the T too. i'm curious what it was about. Game was largely out of hand at that point anyway.

Not consequential, but I'm still curious. Looked like howard was looking for BU after the game but BU was heading for the locker rooms. Looked like Chin came up and talked to him instead. I'm guessing it was for a handshake, but I'm gusesing BU at least waved (hope he did that)? not sure.

BU did wave at coach Howard. It was covered earlier in this thread.

I was at work during the game tonight and tried listening on the radio, but after a few minutes shut it off because it was too distracting/stressful lol. One of my goober friends spoiled the result before I could get home to watch on DVR but I couldn't care less. Already rewatching the game, this time with the Spanish broadcast. I work again in the morning but eff that, the only thing I'm laying to rest is more celebratory beers.

You can't overstate how significant this result is. AND WE DESERVE IT.
How did you get a Spanish broadcast of the Illini?

Somewhat off topic, but is it me or do a lot of the other teams look out of shape compared to the Illini? I think Fletch has done an amazing job at getting these guys in shape and ready for the Big Ten. I've always thought that Garza looks mushy, but then I saw Dickinson. Or maybe we just have some athletic freaks on our team.

I want to give a shout-out to Chocolate Thunder. In the pregame thread for the first Wisc game in early Feb he/she brought up an article by Bill Bradley in Sports Illustrated in the late '70s called You Can't Buy Heart. You can view it on SI Vault (Oct. 31, 1977 issue.) The context was the importance of roles on a team and how DMW was our "enforcer."

I'd never encountered it but finally read it a couple weeks ago. It describes very well the varied roles and cohesiveness required of championship basketball teams. As I've watched the Illini this winter, I've sensed the chemistry and increasing clarity of roles that this article describes. I thought about it a lot last night as I watched/listened to the game.

I wish I'd seen the article decades ago when I was a kid and playing competitively. It describes why things go very well for some teams and badly for others. Talent is merely one of many determining variables.

I agree. The definition alone on our guys is insane. When you add in the fact that they can run the whole game with minimal rest, it really blows the mind in the best possible way. They rarely look truly gassed.

They're all athletic freaks; that's the price of entry to D-1 ball, particularly as a starter or one of the first several off the bench. The dirty secret of college S&C programs is that it really doesn't matter what you do with an 18-22-year-old having that sort of genetic potential. Over that window of age they're all going to grow and improve along every physical dimension no matter whether you have them deadlifting 600 lbs or bodyweight balancing on Bosu balls.

Strength and stamina isn't immediately obvious externally. You'll look cut if you're genetically so predisposed. And if you are predisposed to carry some baby fat then you'll look doughy even if you're brutally strong. I have no doubt that Garza and Dickinson are in top shape. Getting strong and adding muscle necessarily means adding some fat. Can't have one without the other. And can't lose fat without losing muscle.

I would imagine our first round game would be a prime time game, hopefully or I'll have to take Friday off

This seems to be so true. He just seems to run into traffic and see what the traffic does, and then react. I don't think I have ever seen a player, effective with that approach, yet obviously, he is.
It's more like a prize fighter who is aggressive jabbing and punching to see where your weakness is; so he can set you up for the knock out blow.

Associated Press
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Trent Frazier, Andre Curbelo and No. 4 Illinois arrived at Crisler Center ready to make a point.
“We’re the hardest-playing team in the country. That’s our statement,” Frazier said. “Even without our best player, we’ve got a lot of guys on this team.”

Duly noted.

“I would be challenged to find a better win in college basketball this year — a better road win anyway. I mean, in all the analytics, they’re up there,” Illinois coach Brad Underwood said. “So I think it’s got to make a pretty solid statement.”

The Wolverines (18-2, 13-2) looked physically overwhelmed for much of the night, unable to create good shots and unable to keep the Illini off the boards. It was an eye-opening blowout — especially since Michigan has rolled to similar margins of victory against other good teams this season.

“They played with great activity from the jump of the ball. They hit us first. We weren’t prepared,” Michigan’s Isaiah Livers said. “It felt like they were on a run the whole game.”

“We will learn from a loss like this, and the type of performance that we gave tonight was not acceptable at all,” coach Juwan Howard said. “We’re going to come in tomorrow, watch film and see what areas where we can improve on. It’s going to be, I call it a horror film.”

“Obviously the past month, with everything going on between the two teams, we wanted to come in with a chip on our shoulder,” Frazier said. “The energy tonight was incredible. It was so special out there tonight.”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We have all heard for decades that you want your team to be peaking at the right time in a BB season, with all pistons firing toward a great run in the Dance....

I have a feeling that we are seeing a team that has learned from their mistakes (misery, terps, etc) and , as trent said, a chip on their shoulder...

We have to support the Illini with all the positivity we can muster to reach the goals of the program and Illini nation to finally get it done....

How many people have run and played a game recently on this board? I'm sure it's a wide variance of age and shape. I still play consistently. After a year off because of the "pandemic" I started playing again. Absolutely exhausting. Watching these guards go flying in for a layup, ending up on their back, and then getting up quickly and running back to guard is amazing to me. I'd be gassed after doing that once or twice.
