For the record, I don't have a problem with Dick Vitale. He has incredible enthusiasm for college basketball and it's great publicity for him to be talking up the team. And his raising money for cancer research is awesome. I just thought it's funny that he brings up the '89 team so much... the broadcast tonight was about to cut out and he was STILL talking about the Flyin' Illini in literally the final seconds, saying they would beat this team without question.

The only announcers who I sometimes actually want to gripe about (but try not to because I know they're trying their best) are the student announcers on BTN+.

And now I will go watch the highlights from tonight again on YouTube... I am a big fan of these 15+ minute game highlight videos on there.
Yes! Matthew Loves Ball is the channel for anyone interested. He does an amazing job on these highlight videos.

Coach of the year???
If you noticed in the post-game interview, someone mentioned COY to BU and he said, "I don't know who does the voting on all that stuff".....somewhat inferring that YEAH, SURE -- I SHOULD PROBABLY GET SOME VOTES. I'D BE OK WITH THAT!

“They gave me different options of masks to wear, and I thought this was the best mask for me,” he said of the protective covering over his broken nose and upper face. “I’m into comic books and stuff. I feel like a superhero with a black mask on.”
I've seen a lot of players wearing masks in the past 25-30 years. Ayo's looks the best.

OP probably doesn't. History is so... yesterday to many. To others, like us, it's what tradition comprises.
Nice point.

I never saw Butkus play for the Illini but I could listen all day to people talking about how he pulverized RB's or ran through opposing offensive lines like they were paper. And I never saw Manny Jackson on the court, but his legacy grows every year as he continues to give back to the University. (I guess Manny did get mentioned again yesterday, too.) Sorta loving the former Illini and their tweets of late too. The momentum is growing!

BTW --- the Illini got a shoutout yesterday for the VBDI award!

agree . were we ever told exactly what his facial injury is ?
Well it was the broken nose, but what they were kinda hiding was that he was in concussion protocol which meant him being out for a number of games. They like to keep things like that as vague as possible because it affects the game planning of the opposing teams.

Ayo is honestly the most clutch player we will ever see don the Orange and Blue. Full stop. We are so lucky to have this kid.

Also, get ready for First Team All B1G Curbelo next year. It's happening

For the record, I don't have a problem with Dick Vitale.

Vitale made the game unlistenable. I tried to use a radio feed from 590 in StL so I could enjoy Brian Barnhart but the delay was too long. Throughout the game, Vitale switched his commentary to eras from different decades. Yammered about Duke and North Carolina. Touted the Flying Illini but made no mention of the Bruce Weber team that made the Final game.

As for our team last afternoon, my biggest objection was the lack of Grandison. We saw a video of the shootaround before the game where he was draining consecutive 3's. We needed him out there more than Miller. Look at the final stats.

Did you ever read my post? I said he's the most *clutch* player we've had. Doesn't mean necessarily the greatest.

It's all about eras. There will always be the Jordan v Kobe v Lebron debate and the answer really depends on how old you are.

Same applies here.

I'm well aware of what you said. How many game winners did Frankie hit? How many times did Deron ice the game away. Hell, Deron hit the 3 that capped the greatest comeback in tournament history.

You could even bring up Kiwane Garris who iced away many games from the FT line. Ayo is no doubt in the top list all time, but recency bias is a thing.

it’s likely time for Belo to be starting- he was our best player yesterday and the offense is noticeably different the last few games when he’s in there. Having him on the floor with Kofi is our best offensive lineup

Miller has been good on defense and adds good elements to the offense - but come tourny time we really can’t afford to be playing our second best lineup from the start. He and Frazier are playing similar roles now with Ayo back which is spot up 3 and D- and we need Frazier’s on ball D more

Im sure BU will be reluctant to make changes to the lineup- but it’s not time to be worrying about egos

Brad's not changing a thing. Trust me.

Miller has a bigger ego and better D. I trust coach to make the best call for the team dynamics

boy , let’s just hope someone else on the roster now or added soon can possibly fill Ayo’s shoes next year or in the years to come .

the only way to sustain success is to have these awesome players in the pipeline .

But there were a lot more that weren't called. Kofi gets fouled almost every time he gets the ball.
Not every foul is going to be called, especially inside and even more so against those defending Kofi. If that’s what it will take for you to feel it was a fairly well officiated game then you’ll always be disappointed — and if it came to be that would be one boring a$$ game cuz there are fouls that aren’t called against Illini players too. Keep control of the game, call the “obvious” fouls and enough fouls to keep players safe, and do all that without wrecking the flow of the game too much — that’s what I consider a pretty well officiated game. I think this game met that criteria.

I will also say that one call Kofi is going to rarely get is those that happened early in second half when he kind of “shot put” two attempts (believe might have been back to back possessions). Was he fouled? I’m sure he was. But when it looks like he doesn’t have a plan and is indecisive, he rarely gets those calls. Is it fair? No, but I see that happen to other post players too. When Kofi is a bit smoother and making a move that gives him an advantage, he is more likely to get those calls. But Kofi nor any player is going to get every call — and would make for a boring game if they did. I remember that IU game with 50+ fouls called being pretty tough to watch.

Did you ever see Deron Williams or Frankie Williams. Ayo is elite but he's not head and shoulders above every player we've ever had.

Frank Williams was so clutch. He used to take over games at the end in the same way as Ayo. I still remember his game winning shot that won the Big Ten title at Minnesota, among others.

There were two calls that went OSU's way on balls tipped out of bounds. Both of those plays resulted in 3 point buckets for OSU. Both plays looked like they should have been our possession. I was fine with how the foul calling was going but those 2 plays were brutal.
