I'm a little lost at how Iowa isn't ahead of Michigan. They won what 7 of their last 8? Sure they lost to scUM, but Michigan lost to us and MSU, while Iowas been on a heater.

Also as others have pointed out, the fact OSU is 8 is a head scratcher. At some point, losing to top 10 teams really indicates you shouldnt be top ten, regardless of how close you come.

Also, how long have we been craving a team that finishes the season strong? BU's teams always seem to step it up late in the year. By far the most refreshing aspect of the Illinois revival to me.

To be able to play your best ball in March is so special.

Iowa is 12-7 in Q1/Q2 games. Michigan is 13-3.

Illinois could play Gonzaga 3x and lose all 3 and that wouldn't necessarily mean they're not the 3rd best team in the country.

Yeah I totally get that.

Maybe my confusion stems from how the AP poll is ranking teams. Are they really taking the entire body of work into account, is there recency bias, what about injuries to key players?

They are compiling the votes of voters, and nothing more. Voters can prioritize and downgrade rating factors anyway they choose.

It's an aggregate of 60+ media members rankings. Each voter ranks teams as they see fit. There is no one-size-fits-all answer.

There has been talk for ages about teams getting hot at the right time of the year , or so and so will have his team ready in march, etcetc....

gotta feeling that is what we need to remember when we have some hiccups at the beginning's of certain seasons....with HIS roster in place coach has had the Illini in high gear last year and this year........Truly evidence of HIS culture taking root in the program and ,of course, getting the right balance of players and team chemistry is of the utmost importance....And he will be talked about in the future as one of those coaches who will have his team ready for March

BU's make up of being tough on players is finally paying off with the on court results....Ayo stating what he did about BU being tough on him showed Ayo and the team that coach's desire is to win it all and every player on the team has committed to that notion also....

Nothing's guaranteed except the plain fact , to me , that this year's Illini team will run through that proverbial brick wall for coach and each other.........This team has become one of my all time favorite illini teams, ranking right there with 2005 and 1989....

Interesting to see Loyola at No. 18. That's going to be quite a fall to the 8/9 line as they've been projected by some.
Im not sure how they are even ranked. They lost the only 2 games that meant anything against Wisconsin and Richmond. Other than those 2 teams they have played no one and beat teams that have played no one. Drake has no business being in the NCAA tournament. Drake has literally played no one. Their quad 1 wins (1-2) are all against Loyola. Drake's sos is like 190 lol. Loyola's sos is 104.

If Iowa and Michigan were playing on a neutral site (hopefully not this weekend), who would you take straight up? The voters have indicated they would take Michigan.

When Michigan outperforms us in nonconference games, are "ranked" higher in conference games, but ranked lower in nonconference+conference games. Can't make B1G logic up.

The irony of leapfrogging Michigan while the B1G denies the Illini co-champs tastes just a little sweet.
This reminds me of '88-'89. Indiana won the Big 10 title because we lost 4 games when Kendall Gill was injured and out of the lineup. We had lost zero games with Kendall in the lineup. We beat Indiana twice. The selection committee gave ILLINOIS a 1-seed and I believe Indiana got a 2-seed. Bobby Knight was pissed. šŸ˜†

Would be hard for too many voters to keep UM ahead of the Illini after the thrubbing by Illinois and then the loss to MSU. Won't matter much in the seeding, but I imagine most would vote that way based on recent trends (and overall performance). Lets just win the BTT and put this to rest. We would then likely be a #1 seed as the # 3 overall (assuming Baylor does not fall lame and the Zags finish as expected).
