Like the Hawkeyes, the Fighting Illini had never had a first-team pick until Dosunmu came along.

I think this is the first time an Illini player is a first team AP All American

This should mean that Kofi, as a consensus second-team All-American, will have his banner hung in the SFC rafters, along with Ayo's.

Dosunmu, Cockburn named to AP All-America teams

Illinois honors all consensus First Team and Second Team All-Americans by raising banners of their numbers and names into the rafters. Dosunmu and Cockburn are well on their way to earning such requisite honors.

Ayo Dosunmu First player in Illinois history to be named 1st team AP All-American.
How is it possible nobody from the 2005 team was all American?

This is not to take away from Ayo's greatness btw. He deserves it and should definitely be POY.

The headline makes no sense. Baylor had 3 players (one on each team) but Gonzaga got one on each of the first and second teams... just like we did. So how, exactly, did Gonzaga and Baylor "dominate" the AP All-America teams?
Gonzaga - Kispert (1st Team), Timme and Suggs (2nd Team), Ayayi (Honorable Mention)
Baylor - Butler (1st Team), Mitchell (3rd Team)
Illinois - Ayo (1st Team), Kofi (2nd Team)

Keep disrespecting us, please. Bulletin Board material.

Because that's been the narrative this season. Their minds are made up. Don't confuse them with data. :cautious:

It's the 2020-21 national narrative. Ayo continuing to call out the disrespect, and the team backing up the talk with wins, will lead to future headlines featuring the Illini. Our team (both players and coaches) has used this chip as motivation all year, especially late. I hope people like Wally Sz-whatever his name keep talking (although there are plenty picking IL as a favorite, which is nice) and providing that motivation all the way to April 5th!

Congrats to two deserving Illini! Expectations are one thing, but for Ayo to actually come through and perform at such a high level and with elite players like cade and garza, it's just awesome...awesome...sasowli!
And for Kofi...man, the steps and work this guy put into learning the game, improving his athleticism, and hands...finally HANDS!! It's just so great to see an Illini come in raw, develop, and succeed! Second team is no joke and well deserved!

Your second point in particular is an excellent one. When has a player such as Kofi, so relatively new to the game, managed to become second team All-American in his sophomore season? Can anyone think of a comparable?

Tough one.

Mutombo was a two time Big East Defensive Player of the Year during his 3 years at Georgetown, and 3rd team All-American his Senior year.

He barely spoke English and was not a basketball player prior to enrolling at Georgetown.

That's the first one that came to my mind.

Garza wasn't new to the game but he was similarly ranked and was first team by his junior year. Joel Embiid might be a better comparison if he had stayed for his sophomore year.
