Trent Frazier returns for fifth season at Illinois

This is a great problem to have, but how are we gonna get everyone as many minutes as they think they need to get?

Please. Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, etc have five or six McDonald's AAs on their roster and they're not worried about getting every one the minutes they want. We've got a nice lineup, but it's not even in the same universe as the talent those teams typically have.

Dang. I’m starting to worry about seeing any great playing time for each Goode, Melendez and Podz. Where’s Payne and Slim Jake gonna slide in now?

They might not play much as freshman. Not the end of the world unless they get extremely upset and transfer. But none of them are 5 stars, hopefully they don’t expect to come in and play 30 minutes a game.

That being said, a whole lot of minutes open up for them their second years. Only 1 returning player from the 1-3 spots.

Payne and Jake will be in the rotation. Others will really have to show something to get minutes. Need to keep a guy on all frosh team, we got a streak going.

I imagine Grandison probably keeps his starting spot at least to start the season.

Yeah I see him as playing the 4. I’d be very surprised if our starters are anything but:

Curbelo
Frazier
Plummer
Grandison
Payne or Kofi

If Kofi is gone, I think our style will be spread out, drive and kick, 30 threes a night. Rebounding will go from our greatest strength to greatest weakness. Swapping Ayo/Kofi/Miller for Plummer/Payne/Curbelo is a massive size difference.

Kansas does not have as many most years, Bill Self builds his roster a little differently. How many players do Duke and Kentucky have return for a 2nd year with the way they build rosters now?

To my earlier point, those are they guys that typically transfer when they don't play much early. SIU went through it this past year with a freshman that was highly regarded for an MVC team but not quite good enough yet to be in the rotation. He transfered, so too many guys needing heavy minutes can be an issue. Not trying to be nutty, just pointing that out.

I understand why guys would want to start, but being the 6th man off the bench is severely underrated. You’ll get more looks than the fourth and fifth starter plus every good team needs some spark off the bench. Plummer looks like he could really excel there, I love that he’s willing to take on that role

It’s not when you play, it’s how you play.

I’d rather be on the floor when the clock stops running versus when it starts running.

Two phrases I use often for my players that seem to work pretty well.

So is coach really going to start 3 6’1 guys?

This is where I see Hutch as a wildcard. Still an unknown against Div 1 competition but from previous practice reports he may have the game to crack the starting lineup. Adds length, athleticism, and reportedly a good outside shot.

When we had smaller lineups in last year someone 6'1'' wound get posted up and backed down by a 6'5'' guy. That's going to happen with AC, AP, and TF on the floor at the same time.

I don’t even think this team is designed where we need to think this way anymore. Trent is capable of being a first option scorer, but when you have the offense going through a dynamic PG with at least five great shooters on the roster, either Belo gets to the rim or the most open guy scores.
