The Marching Illini

Any Marching Illini people on here that can answer why the MI did not play 3 in 1 during halftime at the spring game? Sign of things to come? Seems like the way we "retired" the war chant was just to never play it again.

Sadly it is a sign of things to come. The school and student body are really trying to get rid of all the old traditions.

Illiniwek66, the director of the Marching Illini, Barry Hauser, noted on Facebook recently that there would be changes to the pregame entrance/music but I haven't heard anything about the 3-in-1. I believe many would be concerned if the 3-in-1 was unceremoniously retired like the 'War Chant' was a few years ago.

I'm glad that they're finally fixing that. I'd hate to think of some poor student, silently shaking, gently sobbing over the feeling of being victimized by the lyrics to a song that they don't know.

I find the 3 in 1 to be boring and cheesy, so Im not missing it. hopefully they stop playing the same 2 things over and over again all game as well.

MI alum here. 3-in-1 just feels empty without Chief. I think that using the same music and drill as always, but without Chief, is a mistake -- viewers will always be reminded about what is NOT there.

If the band is going to continue playing the 3-in-1, I think it should consider revising the drill and/or introducing some stylized body movement that compliments the music and perhaps is vaguely reminiscent of what used to be (while avoiding anything that haters could squint at and see as being "Indian"). Examples: a line of Illinettes could "sunburst" out of the band block in the endzone at the same point in the music when Chief used to appear; the entire band could then move down the field in some stylized step/horn flashes that spectators could mimic; the Illinettes/guard could raise their arms in a "touchdown" signal right before Alma Mater, like Chief did; and then after Alma Mater, the entire band could do some new body movement/dance/whatever that, again, could be mimicked by the crowd. Basically, just pair new visuals to the music. Sure, it is not "tradition," but the tradition around which the entire production used to be based was axed, so I see no harm in trying something new.

Just read the 3 in 1 because of this thread. Is the song that deeply connected to the chief? The lyrics seem fine. Am I missing something?

Also is this the place to ask: will we ever get a mascot?

Pray we don't. They're looking at Kingfishers for gawdsakes. I could get behind something like MURDER HORNETS but Kingfisher? I think I like the otter thing better. It's going to be groan worthy. I mean why can't we have the Orange and Blues Brothers or S&M Lincoln?

I actually would have been fine with the doughboys idea, if getting a mascot really really was happening.

As a Marching Illini fossil, and one of the original sideline Blues Brothers—I approve of this message.
