If he plays well enough in the G league to get a 10-day NBA contract, he'll get $61,000 and a chance to make the team ($898,000/season minimum for NBA rookies)

Sure. There’s a chance. Is it likely in his first year? Probably not. I would say there is a greater likelihood that he could approach $100,000 from endorsements by staying.

What would prevent him from getting those same endorsements if he left? It's not like Illini fans are going to forget who he is if he's not playing for the Illini next season. Even if he's in the G league, he's more recognizable to any casual fan than any current player with the possible exception of Curbelo.

The g league does not increase your marketability. It basically eliminates it for the time being. It is almost completely out of sight.. Curbelo, Frazier, etc would certainly be the go to endorsements. College basketball is a unique marketing tool in itself. Current players have much greater appeal. Have you seen any place using meyers Leonard over the last few years due to his Illinois connections? No...and he was actually in the nba.

1. He's far more likely to convert some of these endorsements with his popularity in college than in the NBA. College fans are more inclined to cough up money for a guy they're currently following than a guy they followed last year

2. It's a different league and not all college fans follow the NBA

3. Keep in mind the target audience. Who these endorsements are targeting may not be the same college vs. NBA. Products geared to college kids would probably sell a lot better with Kofi playing in college than Kofi playing in the G League

4. A car loses value once it's off the lot. Unless you drive a Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, etc

I think we're a long way from knowing the market on endorsements. I suspect it will be substantially less than 100k for a local personality.

We shall see.
I'm curious about this too. We'll have a way better idea in ~2-3 years. There'll be a lot of hype this year, but not all companies will jump on board. 2-3 years from now, the market will be more tested. I'm super curious to see these numbers

Especially as a preseason. All American and likely one of the faces of college basketball all season

This. Another good example to think about...

A kid at a mid major may have a HUGE following in his conference. Tons of people willing to spend money on stuff he's associated with. He switches to a conference like the Big Ten, SEC, etc and isn't a starter. He's a supporting cast. All those people that loved him still treasure their memories of him in the past, but they're less inclined to cough up money towards him. Also if he's just a supporting cast member now, he probably doesn't have major following in his new conference so he'd make less off of his NIL

Heck, even if a guy transfers and is an instant starter... No guarantee they'll generate as much buzz at their new location compared to what they had going before. This is a major shift

I don't think you go from highly marketable to zero marketing value in one offseason. There has to be some lingering value from the season he had last year, and with a couple of the other highly marketable players from last season moving on, I don't think it's unreasonable to think a local business would rather feature Kofi on a billboard than say Jacob Grandison, even if Kofi is not currently on the team. Especially since current players are barred from wearing the team jersey in marketing materials anyway. You'd have to be recognizable in street clothes. I think the 7 footer everyone saw dunking all over the place last year wins that battle.

I agree that you don't go from highly marketable to zero. I think there is lingering value. But I don't think a lot of businesses take that shot. I wouldn't either. I think most would opt to just not get a player altogether rather than thinking say Grandison vs. Kofi.

Also, why do you think we already don't see a lot of businesses marketing players a year removed from college? There's nothing stopping them at that point.

Back to recruiting though, Kofi staying would be a nice surprise.

How many appliances have you bought because of J Lehman?

I mean, last I checked Leman wasn't 1/5 the starting lineup of a top 5 team nationally, but more importantly, doesn't this argument also implicate the idea that the ad revenue available to college players is being overblown and Kofi might well just end up making less than a G league salary if he stays?

I think the fact is nobody knows how much Kofi stands to make due to NIL. I think it's most likely a lot of these guys are going to get swag and maybe a few hundred dollars a pop for instagram posts. Basically, they'll use their exposure to be social media influencers. But who knows. Just not buying the idea yet that Kofi is coming back due to NIL. I sure do hope I'm wrong though.

Edited to correct a dumb mistake re: Leman's All-American status. He was one, I forgot, and am an idiot.

Need to check again, concensus all-american. I hope you are wrong too, no offense.

Think of it this way: who did you see more of on TV over the past year -- Garza or any player in the G League?

Kofi would be 100x more visible as the face of a Top 10 college team that plays two dozen games on ESPN, CBS and BIG, than toiling on a G League team. Seems logical that guy who gets a lot of face time would command more endorsement dollars than guy in the G League.

P.S. We're not even mentioning that now there seems to be an OVER the table way for boosters to direct money to a player. I mean, if for instance a local car dealer wanted to pay Kofi $100k to appear in a commercial and show up for an autograph signing, is the NCAA going to say that business "over paid"?
