So we currently have two roster openings, with Trent and Da'Monte not officially counting. I don't see this team being in the Top 35 nationally.

We need an athletic big guy (6'8 or taller) who can be our GO-TO GUY, create his own shot and give us 17-20 pts per game. Then we're top 5 in the conference.

You are severely underestimating the potential of this team......even without the coming additions.

I agree there is "potential", but it's not a rock-solid double bye in the BTT type of squad. Talent still required for that.

If anyone has a report on how our players look, hoops-wise, I'm all ears.

Rumor has it they look good.

Also I wouldn’t put any stock in any reports. Last year Hutch and BBV were hurt and guys were out with COVID and we had no clue.

To be fair, we were in the middle of a pandemic lol. Reporters didn't get to attend practices so couldn't report anything back. I'm sure things will go back to normal this summer.

For the most part, it seems early practice reports do usually indicate players who may have an early impact.

I could be mistaken, but it’s been my understanding that reporters are not allowed to attend practice. Most of what we see is video clips released by the team.
So they're allowed to attend a select few I believe. I think the issue with them not being privy to information last year stemmed more from their "sources" not being able to attend. I could be wrong though. I don't know what their process looks like

We should be closer to back to normal.....but no spys from other teams allowed! Few select practices for fans and reporters. We don't want our stuff out there.

Go to guy, Frazier, shooter with size, Hutch, Melendez, Poole or Podz? Interior defense is a big question with Payne and BBV options. I am feeling another interior transfer or Kofi return would greatly alleviate this. It is kind of harsh to expect a newcomer to give 17 to 20 pts per game...who has given the Illini that in the last 20 years other than All Americans Ayo and Kofi IN THEIR 2ND SEASON? Here are the top leaders in Illini history up to 2015 and only nine averaged that in a career.Scoring average (min. 45 games) 1. 20.9 - Nick Weatherspoon (71 games) - 1970-73 2. 20.5 - Dave Scholz (71 games) - 1966-69 3. 20.1 - Don Freeman (72 games) - 1963-66 4. 18.9 - Dave Downey (72 games) - 1960-63 5. 18.6 - John Kerr (70 games) - 1951-54 6. 18.4 - Jeff Dawson (47 games) - 1972-74 7. 18.0 - Deon Thomas (118 games) - 1989-94 8. 17.3 - George BonSalle (56 games) - 1954-57 9. 17.0 - Nick Anderson (69 games) - 1987-89 10. 16.8 - Kiwane Garris (116 games) - 1993-97 Field goals made 1. 803 - Deon Thomas (118 games) - 1989-9

You nailed it. Several of my favorite all-time names in Illini basketball history mentioned above.

And I think you've put a rubber stamp on my observation. I believe that's how far away we are from being in the top 10. Kofi would be the answer --- but I don't expect him back. And without him, we'd need a Nick Weatherspoon/Dave Scholz/Deon Thomas/James Augustine type of offensive threat to get there. Frazier is just a piece of our solid guard rotation--- and all of the others you mentioned in your opening sentence are new to the Illini starting line-up. Expectations have to be low for them.

Best case scenario, imo

C. Kofi, Payne, BBV, Lieb
F. Garcia, Hawkins, Goode
W. Hutcherson, Grandison, Melendez
G. Frazier, Williams, Podziemski
G. Curbelo, Plummer

Some fierce battles for playing time.
Where would you put Corhen? Looks pretty good right?

Yeah with this roster the new freshman will be riding the bench..

Yeah with this roster the new freshman will be riding the bench..
Or those that break through aren't gonna be here 4 years. Yeah, tough sledding, but hopefully they realize that there's daylight at the end of the tunnel.

Not likely Belo is leading scorer. Would be Trent most likely unless Kofi comes back then it's him, although if the hype is real Hutch will average 40 pts per game.

Trent 4th? Doesn't seem likely but hey, if we have at least 5 double digit scorers (adding Plummer or Grandy or, Garcia? in there) we'll be in good shape.
Trent honestly might be fifth or sixth if we bring Kofi back and add Garcia. And he is perfectly ok with that-he can focus on being the elite stopper he is on the defensive end. We will be deeper and better than last year IMO if we can pull that off (Kofi + Garcia). Cart before horse obviously but it’s hard not to get excited about that possibility.

Wait, so we’re back to not having room for good players. Excellent!

I think that Curbelo will likely be top in average scoring as he'll consistently drop double digits whereas our wings will likely be more flavor of the day, with the hot hand being fed, while colder shooters focusing more on the defensive end.
