He’s still in the portal. Do you mean why he entered the portal? I believe OA was the main reason he came to Illinois.
I was referring to is he still in the portal? I haven’t heard anything about him picking a new school or staying. In fact the last update was him being the first Illini basketball player to sign an NIL deal lol

Man we're really dedicating a lot to this for a walk on. This is the only thing I'll say about it:

I get the vibes that Edgar didn't want to leave. I have no idea why he did, but...
1. His bio still says University of Illinois
2. Around the time the transfer was announced, he tweeted, "I just want to play basketbal man... :/"

Who knows what happened, but I never understood why some people saw him as someone who could earn a scholarship. Maybe he could, but for fans to suggest it with no support seemed like a stretch

I think it's hilarious when people suggest, "Oh Brad just got really lucky last year that Ayo stayed or else we would've been screwed". He's lucky a guy he recruited stayed? This happens all the time - guys aspiring for the NBA get feedback and return. And look at that... it's now happened 2 years in a row (Kofi). Brad must be real lucky

A comment I saw a lot of last year was something along the lines of "I can't wait until Illinois' luck runs out and they go back to the basement after they lose their 2 All Americans". Unfortunately for them it looks like BU got magically remarkably lucky once again with 2 All Americans. It can't possibly be good recruiting or coaching though, it's just sheer luck.

I personally hadn't seen this "narrative", but if it is out there, that is the dumbest thing ever.

Is Calipari lucky that he gets 5 stars to sign? Is Duke and K lucky that they get studs on their roster every year?

Obviously, if you don't have really good dudes on your team, you don't have a chance to compete for national championships, but when you get really good dudes, you have to be a good coach, and I think we've been fortunate to have really good players and we have a really good coach, IMO.

I don't see many scenarios where Curbelo, Trent, and Alfonso are on the floor together and so their minutes probably wont combine for more than 80. Also our 3 freshmen will be competing for minutes at the 2/3 (and possibly 4) spots along with Hutch, Jake, and Da'Monte which will also limit Curbelo, Trent, and Alfonso from surpassing 80 combined minutes.

Curbelo: 26
Trent: 32
Plummer: 19
* (77 minutes at the 1/2)
DaMonte: 23
Jake: 21
Hutcherson: 17
Hawkins: 11
* (72 minutes at the 3/4)
Kofi: 29
Payne: 9
* (38 minutes at the 5)
Podzimski/Goode/RJ: 11
Lieb/BBV: 2
Pretty darned good. just two small comments:

1. Curbelo’s minutes are low at 26

2. And the allotment of minutes at the 3/4 is still a wild card

I mean, my question has much less to do with basketball and much more to do with curiosity and caring about the individuals on the team as more than just basketball players.

Not sure if the scholarship point is a jab at something I mentioned before, but to clarify - we have an extra scholarship available, so wouldn’t it make sense to designate one of the PWOs as a scholarship player for the year? We don’t gain anything by not using that scholarship so why not reward one of the PWOs for their commitment (in which case probably not Padilla). Am I crazy? Is there a rule against giving that scholarship to a PWO for a year then shifting them back to PWO?

I only mentioned the scholarship thing because I remembered people suggesting Edgar wouldn't be a "normal PWO".

I see your point though on 'why not" give the scholarship. I feel like it happens a lot in football

I imagine in football it happens more because you have a greater chance of not using every scholarship spot. Basketball you are much more limited in terms of pure numbers. Assuming 2-3 redshirts for injuries, freshman, or transfer sits and you’ve got 10-11 left which are probably all needed for players that get some amount of minutes in meaningful games. This year has basically given us 15 scholarships, and even with 2-3 redshirting (maybe a good idea for Lieb) that’s still 12-13 players on scholarship IF you use them all. Not all of those will play, so would make sense to not fill it as you’d basically tell that person they wouldn’t be in the rotation. Not an easy sell. PWOs already know they won’t get minutes and are still committed. Just thinking aloud - but that’s my guess why it’s less normal for basketball but may make sense this year.

With Kofi back - is there a chance we see Lieb (and maybe 1-2 others) redshirt the year? I haven’t heard much about Lieb’s growth but I have to believe another year with Fletch would only help him get ready for 22-23 when we will be relying on him as the primary backup.

I could see Lieb and Goode taking redshirts. MAYBE CH if he still isn’t ready

Wouldn't Edgar then have that scholarship the final 3-4 years of his career here, that seems like it would be a big mistake. I could be wrong about that though.

I doubt that would happen with Goode. Reports are he is, physically, the most ready to play.

That Kofi interview was awesome. Love this guy

a few things that stood out to me

1. Said Geoff Alexander is one of the main reasons he returned to Illinois

2. Said Orlando is his guy and he owed it to him to give him a chance to recruit him. (I got no negatives feelings toward Orlando and appreciate what he did here and the players he recruited and developed here, but I never really bought the idea that he told Kofi to go back to Illinois. He might have said good things about staying at Illinois, but I’d be shocked if his top priority wasn’t getting Kofi to transfer.

3. super complimentary of Coleman Hawkins. He said he could end up as one of the best ever here. He must have learned his hyperbole from Brad. :) Add this to this list of great reports about Coleman. Excited for him this season.

My biggest question is: When can I buy some Kofi gear for myself and my 100 closest friends!?!???
