Is he wrong?
Not at all, but still a surprising thing to hear a HC say out loud in front of media, though I'm guessing he's said more or less the same to the players' faces by this point. I'd say I'm worried this tactic will blow up in his face but there isn't much to blow up anyways, so have at it.

Scroll up…it’s already been talked about. Yes he’s serious. The last staff was abysmal
Didn't see this discussed specifically: "Particularly the offensive line, I don't believe we have a player in the two deep that they recruited here over the last three years that is really significantly doing anything for us in the playing department."

I guess it's true. He's not talking about the guys recruited 4, 5, and 6 years ago in the 2 deep. But next year will be a complete disaster if they don't get transfers. You'd think there would be at least one player. Pretty damning statement about the previous staff without condemning them directly.

BB essentially announced to all transfer candidates: Big Ten playing time is available immediately if you come here.

Might as well plant the seed early in the process if they have assessed there is no hope for a large chunk of the current roster.

Zero points, ever, for anyone, no matter the circumstances, for excuses about the contents of the inherited cupboard. Period.

Now, having said that, the nature of the weird and unique scholarship rules and structures of this offseason were always going to mean a bunch of transfers in both directions. That will be true of every school in the country, it's gonna be nuts. But I still don't like to hear comments like this.

Yeah, but he really wasn't making excuses. He stated a fact: no one recruited over the last three years has made any really significant contribution during a game and they can't have that. Initially, I took it as a motivational ploy to these younger guys, as in step it up or we'll recruit over you. I don't think he intended it as a dig at the previous staff, and generally he's been very complimentary towards the previous staff regarding the players that he inherited, but I do feel it can be interpreted that way.

I don’t think it was him digging at the past staff so much as calling a spade a spade. We all know this team is talent deficient.

IMO part of the process is recognizing where we are. He’s not wrong - This is where we are right now as a team. If it weren’t so true, I might not like I he optics of his comments.

Not a big fan of this tactic. That said, if he lights a couple fires under some guys, that would be great.
I don't understand the reasoning behind BB making that pronouncement about the OL. Even fired up, most of those guys don't have the talent to play big ten ball, and the freshmen are still in OL development mode and not expected to make a contribution. You can't put it on all on the players... some of the blame has to go to the current coaches too. BP, for instance, is having by far his worst season, as a super senior, in a system that's supposed to play to his strengths. Is that all him, or is there something going on with how they're coaching/managing him?

BP’s woes are mostly a confidence issue with himself. It didn’t start this year, it’s been trending down since last season. Here is a quote from a mailbag post from Robert over at Illiniboard. It starts with BP returning after his COVID downtime last year.

And when he returned he was as locked-in as we've ever seen him. 18-25 for 205 yards and a touchdown (plus a rushing touchdown) in that Nebraska game. He then started the next game against Iowa on the same heater. He was 8 for his first 8, two of them touchdown passes, and Illinois led Iowa 14-0. Yes, last season. Brandon Peters returns from Covid and hits on 26 of his first 33 passes with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Those 80 minutes of football included beating Nebraska 41-23 and then leading Iowa 14-0.

Then someone flipped the light switch off. 2-10 the remainder of the Iowa game (Iowa won 35-21). 3-14 for 21 yards in the Northwestern game. 0-4 in the Penn State game. He gets back from Covid, starts 26 for 33, and then finishes the season completing only 5 of his final 28 passes.

So yes, that would suggest that confidence might be an issue. It's not that he can't do it. We've seen him do it. We watched the four-game Big Ten winning streak in 2019. I was there for his 369 passing yards at Michigan State. We know it's in there.

He has simply been hot and cold his entire Illini career. And I'm not sure I've ever seen as crazy as 26 for 33 followed by 5 for 28. That's scalding and then freezing.

Bummer about Epstein. Tough career for him.
I'll confess up front that I have not seen Epstein and or Hansen play in person. On TV, they appear to play with guts and determination. I admire that. They also appear to be a bit "thin" or undersized for the positions they play which involve so much intense contact. This may be why they have been injured so often. I admire them for having probably demanded and received more out of there bodies than their bodies are capable of supporting over the long haul. Would like to read thoughts from others. Am I close or really off base here?

I think this is a good take. Both quality guys with grit. Playing beyond their baseline for sure. You may not become a top 10 program with these type of players as your mainstay, but more like them makes us better. Add in some 4* types (I won't even ask for 5* at this point) with natural build and speed for the positions and and then they compliment the whole tremendously.

BB shoots it straight. He has praised the previous staff at times when things first began, but now he's had time to evaluate everything. Gotta like a coach who is brutally honest.

Disclosure, I haven’t had a chance to listen to the press conference yet.
After Wisconsin, BB said he would be looking to see how guys responded. I wonder if he didn’t like some things he was seeing and decided it was time to move on? Maybe it’s a “culture” setting move as much as anything. Just my speculation. If that’s the case, I fully support it.

#91
If we're going to lose by 50 every game, then I would rather see the younger/newer players in full time.

BB is right, although surprisingly candid/ruthless, and I support him in this move.

I initially wasn’t high on the BB hire, but he won me over. Since then I’ve known this was going to be a process and not a quick one. His comments smell to me of a guy who wants to convince everyone that yes, this will be a long process. Essentially throwing current players under the bus to gain more time. I don’t see what benefit this has. Does he think this is going to motivate players? Someone mentioned it shows potential transfers that there is plenty of playing time available here. If BB can’t convince them of that without this tactic and if they’re not smart enough to figure that out, then probably wouldn’t qualify academically and BB isn’t the recruiter we thought. I just think it is a bad look for a coach. Yes, it isn’t anything many people on board have said and likely very factual, but still a bad look to say this publicly. Really can’t see this being a positive on recruiting trail either, especially when you’re preaching Familly.

Especially if they are looking at jucos with 2 yrs remaining. Or transfer with 2+years remaining. So transfers.
Applies less to HS prospects.
It looks like plan is to fill out HS commit list, hopefully, then balance transfers in/out.

The OL has been decent or better over the last few years. Under BB and his O-line coach, they have not. Not a Lovie fan but, it is hard for me to see how this is being laid upon Lovie.

His comments were about the previous staffs lack of development of the kids they recruited, not a shot at the kids.
Oh he definitely took a swing at the previous staffs, but I don’t know how anyone can listen to that and think it isn’t a shot at the kids too. The horse racing analogy alone doesn’t fit the “not a shot at the kids” narrative. Again, I think what he is saying is in large part true, but there were much better ways to say it that wouldn’t risk alienating current players — and potential future ones. I just don’t think his approach is a good look or one that will do him any favors in the future.

So now it is the previous staff's fault for BB's poor coaching and decision-making.
Bingo.....Poor coaching and in game decisions have cost us much more. At this point there is no date to accomplish a full rebuild. Just don't see it happening with this current staff.

I am a huge fan of this. This should motivate the players or tell us 100% that he was right and they are not mentally sound enough for D1 football. This exactly tells transfers that they can play immediately. Hit the JUCO hard and the transfer portal. We need to reshape this team as I am pumped about the future. The OL was suppose to be a strength and its horrible. We are getting destroyed weekly. If you are a player, man up and get better, if not, sit on the bench and watch someone else take your spot.

It is Lovies fault at the lack of depth they have on the roster. They have 3 OL on the roster that they trust(slaughter might have made 4) They recruited undersized interior linemen which isn't going to work in the big 10. The WR group as a whole is terrible, The struggle with QB is obvious. Lovies plan of relying on grad transfers was a terrible idea from the get go, never going to get anywhere with that.
