Curbelo is in the locker room taking full responsibility right now. I believe that.

He's gonna eat not just a slice of humble pie...he's gonna eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for a full week of practice.

As bad as he (that game) was, remember he did NOTHING basketball related for 10 straight days before one practice and one game.

But...keep the hot takes coming! It's so good with hot buttered popcorn!!
Yes, and he got a concussion. You don't always completely recover from them this quick. He was way off all night and I suspect lingering effects of that was the reason.

I can’t believe I paid to watch that. I’m so mad. Underwood should have taken Curbelo out at the 5 minute mark. I don’t want to hear or see any trash talk from anybody anymore. They just lost to a bad Marquette team.

Not capable? By no means you are right, we don’t want to overreact.
Illinois could have had 300 more possessions in that game and Belo would have had 298 turnovers. He was completely on tilt down the stretch.

Again, Underwood nipped that in the bud every single time last year. We didn't know what lay behind that door.

It's worse than we possibly could have feared.

Attended my first Illini game in 1959 and have been an Illini fan ever since. So, maybe I have seen +1500 Illinois games. I can't remember a worse performance by one Illinois player in my +60 years. But, most coaches prior to 2000 would never allow a player to make those many mistakes and still be in the game. I remember the day when you made a turnover you would come out of the game.
Yeah that has always been a bad coaching strategy. Players playing scared. Dumb.

This is still a potential final four team. One game doesn't change that. A thought-Let's not tear Andre down. He's an amazing player who had a terrible terrible game. It's one loss and everything is still in front of us this season. Andre works his !!! off and was just off all night. I promise you we will be a different team next week, especially with a certain big man back

The fact we turned the ball over that many times and had such a huge disparity at the FT line to lose by only 1 is simultaneously encouraging and demoralizing
came here to say this. And, like I said in the Ark St game thread, as of now, and without Kofi, we are a very average team. Curbelo's struggles tonite made us below average. Lots of cleanup to do in practice.

But this is what practice and culture are for, not prime time games

Nothing can simulate the emotion of those very same prime time games. We have to use the combination of that big-game emotion and a winning culture to improve in practice.

Hahaha! I mean.....there's hot takes and overreactions......and then there's this! Lmfao.

Stop criticizing Curbelo. He's just making freshman mistakes. He'll mature. Right.

If Brad had any balls, he's definitely not starting next game. Screw the whole you can't mess with his confidence theory. He needs to wake up.

Can't imagine how mad I would be if my DVR hadn't stopped with 5 minutes to go in the game.

I get the frustration. That game was a head scratcher. The season just started though. I don't know why we always have these head scratching losses and suddenly figure it out. Let's let out our frustrations on here and regroup for next game.

Go Illini

I’ll be honest…. I think you are overreacting.

Our offensive possessions after the Hawkins 3 with 10:14 remaining to go up 12:
Hawkins TO
Curbelo missed fade away
Curbelo missed layup, which he rebounded and missed again
Plummer TO
Grandison TO (Charge)
Curbelo missed jumper
Frazier made 3 (61-55)
Curbelo makes 2 FTs after getting bailed out on a bad jumper (63-55)
Damonte missed jumper followed by Hawkins slam (65-57)

Curbelo missed layup
Curbelo missed layup
Curbelo missed layup
Curbelo TO and foul
Curbelo makes 1 of 2 from the line (66-62, 3:04 remaining)
Curbelo missed 3, rebounded by Damonte, missed jumper by Frazier
Grandison missed 3 pointer
Frazier missed 3 pointer
Curbelo missed jumper
Frazier TO (kick ball that wasn't)
Curbelo TO to end it.

By my count, 12 of our final 20 possessions ended in Curbelo's hands with only 3 points to show for it. 2 of those came from FTs on a questionable shot that he was bailed out on by the foul call and the other FT he hit was when he nearly turned it over and fell on the Marquette player. I don't mean to blame Curbelo as I think BU and staff should have reined in the hero ball.

I'm going to echo others on let's not overreact. Remember, our Illini that managed to get a 1 seed in last year's tournament lost to a less than impressive Mizzou team in a game in which we had Ayo AND Kofi on the court.

In fairness, I don’t really understand why he didn’t see that Curbelo was doing hero ball and didn’t pull him. But Shaka Smart is not the better coach. Not by a long shot. They gambled and won. We imploded. Sad thing is Marquette really isn’t that great of a team. But certainly better than us tonight.
I agree, Underwood is a better coach, but tonight, he got outcoached. Just like how I don't think Curbelo is worse than all the other players that played in this game, but tonight, he was. Hopefully neither of those things happens very often. This team will look completely different when Kofi is back against Cincinnati.

We turned it over 15 times in the first half. It was a road game. We didn’t have our best player. Our point guard had the worst game of his career. We lost by one. Yeah the result sucked, but you guys need to relax.

This game won’t be a big deal when it’s March. Our number one seed team last year laid an egg against Mizzou. It happens. Learn from it. Bounce back.
And Rutgers. And almost blew it against Ohio. This happens. I was just hoping we could skate by Kofi's suspension without a blemish.
