Yeah I'm still baffled as to why he kept Curbelo in for so long (when it was clear as day he was playing poorly)
Or why no time out and set play at the very end, to at the least, keep Curbelo from dribbling it away. Get Trent the last you touch!

BU needs to shorten the leash on Curb Appeal to a 3 foot chain. I blame BU for not benching a player who is absolutely killing his team with beyond sloppy, stupid turnovers, wild off balance shots, no court vision, constant complaining to the refs, and an uncanny instinct for crushing any momentum we had. Trent should have been running the point for most of the second half, instead of letting Andre spiral down until the whole team circled the drain.
Trent was dog tired and he has a bad shoulder. Too bad we have no other option at PG.
Maybe Hutch can do it sometime soon.

BU can make a smart change anytime during a game...but dont see it much...it was almost like the false hope we had with Loyola.

You can love a player and still pull him if he's hurting team. This is all on BU IMO.
Wondering if BU has trouble seeing past his original game plan in games when once they get going he might be better off to totally abandon it and go with something else entirely.

The biggest thing that concerns me with Belo is his shot. Having a shot to keep defenders honest is what he needs to be a great guard in this league and his shot selection and execution was terrible tn
Very very good point and valid concern.

It seems like we've been talking about Curbelo fixing turnover for a year now. Last year it was "wait until later in the season and he'll get it under control". Then it was "he's a true freshman, he'll improve with age". Well here we are and it's actually gotten worse. I don't know what if anything is going to turn this around for him but it needs to come soon. I'm starting to fear it isn't coming at all.
Sometimes you gotta get embarrassed to learn! He's(Curbelo) learning the hard way. We didn't deserve to win tonight and the team knows it! We played scared, careless, and young! Even upperclassmen! Trent played awesome and has to learn to go take the ball like Ayo did! It's your team Trent! Be the leader you are! Trent played outstanding! DaMonte played well on the boards and defensively for the most part... but still isn't a threat whatsoever offensively! We needed scoring big time and left it all on the bench! And Trent didn't get to touch it when it mattered most! I think we'll be better for this list and we have a lot of work ahead of us! We definitely didn't play like we deserve to be #10 this game! I-L-L... back to work and come out and play as everyday guys with grit and determination! Let's go! WE GOT THE TALENT!

Eh maybe Underwood’s playing the long game. Curbelo’s gonna learn a lot more from how bad this feels than he would from Underwood pulling him for Trent.

Bad game from Curbelo. Ball handling is going to be a concern all season. Hopefully the fouling is not.
Maybe. That’s definitely a way to get the message across.

But alternatively: yank him, get the W and show the kid the tape. There’s plenty to pick from. If AC needs the whole team to go down with him to get the message (that the tape can show), then that’s a sign that the maturity has a longer way to go. He’ll get right.

One loss is not the end of the world. Lots of things to correct. The leash on Curbelo needs to be very short until he figures things out. Part of point guard IQ is to recognize, who has the hot hand.

No, there was no play needed just run clock until they foul you. If we had to inbound that's 5 on 4 and they actually WANT to foul if they don't get the steal. It was the right no TO call by BU IMO.

He's my dog...but Curbelo was selfish this game...7 minutes with Frazier barely touching the ball...hmmmmm....he took approximately 7 of our last 10 shots.

When are people going to realize BU has an inability to make in game adjustments? This game of high pick and roll only works when you spread the floor with shooters. What’s the point of bringing in shooters if you want to keep them on the bench? Williams has no offensive ability and it’s like constantly playing 4 on 5 on the offensive end.
To fair this is said about literally ever coach of the teams I follow when they lose

So the big question as we all knew this year was going to be whether Curbelo could do with higher usage and more responsibility what he was able to do in spurts last year. And the spurts were on purpose, we saw the beginnings of his performance tonight lots of times last year and Underwood would just sit him down for whole halves. We didn't need to rely on him so we just took the good and discarded the bad.

You don't want to overreact to one game, especially when it's against an opponent who plays in the way best suited to induce a meltdown, but let's not mince words, that was a single handed game losing meltdown, the panicked out of control performance of someone who isn't capable of managing themselves on the floor at this level.

And compounding things is our lack of other options in that role. Trent was brilliant tonight, but he's not that guy. Plummer was nearly as disturbing as Belo, a total zero from him. Any notion that any of the bigs can supplement our initiating is a fantasy.

BU should not have let Belo finish that game, akin to a boxing ref not stopping a fight for a helpless fighter, but we can't pretend he had workable alternatives.

Teams with a lot of good players, which we have, can survive some flaws. We were on our way to a 6ish seed two years ago with a team that couldn't shoot to save its life.

Having said that, no one to reliably initiate offense is a very crippling flaw, as anyone who remembers the low points of Jaylon Tate or Sam Maniscalco or Khalid Lewis can tell you. You just lose the ability to tap any of your other strengths (see: Cockburn, Kofi)

Belo will have better days, but again, nights like tonight were regular occurrences for him last year and should be expected until proven otherwise. Which means we're nowhere near a top 10 team, and depending on how well teams that aren't built to Shaka Ball incorporate the film they're about to get, look out below.
Not capable? By no means you are right, we don’t want to overreact.

Why didn’t Plummer replace Curbelo with Trent at PG for the final 5 minutes? Curbelo was hot trash today
From what I’ve seen Plummer can’t guard a mop. Hopefully Brad gets him tightened up. We need him badly.

Wow 10 pages in guys as I wrote this. Nicely done, friends. I can’t wait to go and read everyone meltdown (hopefully you aren’t melting down too badly).

Honestly not terribly torn up about the loss. We are not good against physical teams and Curbelo was beyond pressing late.

Taking a deep breath as we get Kofi back and will certainly look more put together offensively going forward.

Onto the next and Iowa on Saturday!

Our season starts next game. However belo needs to stop forcing it and use his team. Also we did not look like we were conditioned like we were last year. We will not win many games with 24 turnovers. Also does anyone know our win loss record when Larry is the ref

Attended my first Illini game in 1959 and have been an Illini fan ever since. So, maybe I have seen +1500 Illinois games. I can't remember a worse performance by one Illinois player in my +60 years. But, most coaches prior to 2000 would never allow a player to make those many mistakes and still be in the game. I remember the day when you made a turnover you would come out of the game.

I’m sorry, I really love your posts and this is not meant to start anything, but to imply that 10 straight days off had anything to do with the utter selfishness?
Absolutely not...he was really bad as I said, and no excuses for his decision making....but he is clearly a player that needs to be in a rhythm and running an offense that can move the ball around. Neither happened tonight. It's mostly on him no doubt...but I absolutely think that sitting around for over a week can have that dramatic of an effect on our practices and offensive rhythm.

There were several other players making head scratching decisions with the ball, or not making decisions with the ball. CoHawk, Grandison, BBV.....there was a lot of holding the ball when the floor was so spread out because of the pressure D....and too much dribbling and holding for way way to long.

I’ll play devil’s advocate here. Curbelo’s an emotional player and an instinct player. If he’s going to clean up the turnovers this season, it’s gotta start with some emotional maturity. Getting benched on the way to a W only hurts as far as your own pride goes; being handed the reins to lead your team and teammates straight to an L — that stings way more (at least, I hope it does). Show the tape while those feelings are fresh and let’s see if Curbelo’s as quick a learner as Kofi has been the last two seasons.
I'll play devils advocate but in difft vein....if BU had just attacked the press in 1st half we would have been up by 20 in 1st half and probably won by 10. We may still be complaining a little bit..but would have avoided the meltdown we are participating in.

This half court slow down crap against lengthy Marquette defenders without Kofi was low IQ coaching on our part.

Coaches put players in position to be successful...this was not one of BUs finer moments.

Look, I get all the "it's just one game, we will be fine," "can't write off the season after one bad loss," "Belo will be fine, Brad is a great coach." And to a certain degree I agree with all of it. It is only one game and we are a good team. But we are seeing some of the same terrible execution and poor play issues we saw early last year and in the final game of the season.

We have an experienced team with a legitimate all american who has a chance at player of the year (granted has not played yet), two 5th year seniors who are two of our most valuable players in the past 20 years, and a dynamic point guard with all big ten potential and depth; and many think we will be better than we were last year even without Ayo. We should not be seeing this type of game with poor end of game execution and 26 (TWENTY SIX) turnovers. We all want the elusive Nat Championship and a team with this much talent does not come around every year. Believe me....been a fan for 45 years. Illinois cannot continue to waste these opportunities if that is the goal.

Hopefully this is the ultimate learning experience and we get things cleaned up a lot. Sorry for the long post, just frustrating given our expectations and potential this year.

Since we have already blamed everyone else in the world I’ll take a couple shots too:

1. The refs were so ticky tack it blew away any chance to gain momentum. I hate hate hate Bo boroski games. I automatically know each game of ours is going to be close and dumb.

2. Damonte with that bonehead last minute foul trying to rip the ball away from Lewis when he already had the rebound. Put them up to down 1. Stupid stupid stupid
