So you're telling me we lost as a one seed in the second round of the NCAA tournament, lost all three of our assistant coaches, lost our top in-state recruit who started every game last year, then we got Kofi, Trent, and DMW to stay z hired three new assistants, kept a top 11 ranking preseason, got 3 huge targets all In top 100?

Couldn't be us.

I believe it's also too early even to assess how our non-transfers will play together. I've been watching college hoops a long time. It's a rare season when teams jell in November, or even by mid-December. Sometimes what appears to be a sporadically competent team in mid-January turns out quite well by late Feb. They're kids playing a physical game on a grueling schedule. It's a long season.
It's too early in the season for me to assess your assessment.

We are 3 games into a young season. It's far too early to assess our transfers.
Fair enough. Just stating I don't think it's easy to just go pluck a good center from the transfer portal. Sure they will be there and they will be highly sought after. I don't recall winning any recruiting battles in the portal

I think the Portal may be as tough for finding a Big as the '22 High School class. A pure Center is going to want to know for sure that Kofi is gone, and Kofi may still not be decided until too late. We're ok (but not great) not getting a Big this year (our most pressing need by far is guards). But that means you better make recruiting bigs a gigantic priority in the '23 class.

I can't see Kofi staying, I'd love to see it, but he has to try to go pro unless he has a miserable year. . . which won't happen.

And I hope he plays a long, long time in the NBA.
On the one hand this feels like it has to be true.

On the other hand, if by the end of this season, Kofi is a better, older version of the same player from last season, will that move the NBA draft needle? If he still projects as a 2nd round to undrafted player, and he does well with NIL this season, would it make more sense to put off the G-League for a year and earn off of his NIL, particularly if we have a successful tourney and he wins NPOY or other accolades?

Agreed. Plus he has got a fifth year available...is that too much to ask?

Guess this means that the Illini are no longer doing the... 'That would be the Illinois thing to do', thing any more. Permanently retired for good we hope.

I think Fears brought a little something extra last night with his future coach in attendance.

Where do these kids come from? This kid is what 15 at most? He's built like a grown man. A very large grown man.
Don’t forget, in the world of big basketball, kids are often held back grades to gain a competitive advantage against younger kids. That’s how you see reclassifications so often. Not saying that’s the case here but possibly
