Major programs that can't afford to fire a no-longer-credible coach is going to become a meaningful new source of parity in college football I think.

If it all goes south for Kelly at LSU or Tucker at MSU or Jimbo at A&M, they truly cannot be bought out. The boosters can stump up 25 mil, but not 70.

Two things….1) never underestimate what rich boosters are willing to do and 2) schools would negotiate a buy out to be paid over several years.

Any time there have been rumors of Pat Fitzgerald getting hired somewhere else (GB, Bears), the rumors have come straight from Pat and his publicist.

Exactly. The Northwestern job is legitimately the cushiest job in college football. The administration doesn't expect a lot from you and unless the team completely implodes, it'll be tough to ever lose the job.

With the lower academics bar at LSU and the built-in, talent-rich SEC recruiting landscape that LSU sits in, I expect Kelly will be very successful. But he did seem the quintessential Irish coach, fit-wise. Him at at LSU sounds as odd to me as Ed Orgeron would sound at Notre Dame. Imagine that.

You mean they work like the national debt limit? Just kick the can down the road.
It's crazy, but the entire economic and financial underpinnings of major college football are built on the assumption that money available just keeps going up and up and up. It's certainly been that way for probably 20 years now, but can it be maintained? Sounds familiar for sure. Wealthy boosters and donors are more involved than ever before, and are becoming a bigger piece of athletic department cash inflows.

For the very rich, and for the regions of the country where the appetite to spend for success is huge, I don't see this slowing down anytime soon. In fact, I would not at all be surprised if say the SEC makes a move to expand to 24 teams and breaks away from the NCAA, to form it's own league.

I can also guarantee that at some point, more than a handful of athletic departments will have gotten over their skis on finances and the arms race for football, and will have to borrow money as a program to make ends meet.

It's going to be very difficult to keep the collective of FBS football together as one group. I do see it splitting into some point.

ND is apparently hiring Freeman for good.

Reportedly blew Whitman away and nearly got our job last year. It will be very interesting to see how he does.
Seems like the smartest and simplest move (and early returns from players and remaining staff look pretty positive) - I'm kind of surprised ND is making it and not letting hubris get in the way.

I might be over-reading this, but almost everyone connected to ND seems to be breathing a sigh of relief that they were able to bounce Brian Kelly without having to fire him. Which would make sense.

A friend of mine's kid committed to ND a couple weeks back and people bombarded him as soon as the announcement was made that Kelly was leaving. The only thing he said was "We are good as long as they don't go outside the building."

interesting.

forgot we interviewed freeman. . . not sure how i feel about passing on him, as i believe he'll be a good one, but that's the nature of coaching hires, i guess (and i remember people saying we couldn't hire a group of 5 coordinator; who cares). i think bielema will be good, too, though.

Steve Addazio canned as Colorado State's head coach:

Not surprised at all. This was an odd hire and the foolishness at the end of the Utah State game should have been the last straw except that he collected 5 more straws after that game. Wonder if they'll try to go after Matt Lubick (OC at Nebraska and son of CSU field's namesake.)

Would we be losing Freeman to ND this year if he had been hired here last year?

I felt like Gunther hired the way he did as a strategy to prevent Illinois being a "stepping stone program". He wanted us to be a destination, so he hired guys who had been burned by the bright lights of big time P5, or who would only leave for to HC in the pros. I think BB fits that description, too, and I suspect that influenced Whitman's final decision last year.

I think BB hits the sweet spot in that he’s known as a good coach, but the top programs around the country are going to aim higher. (Or maybe flashier). He fits Illinois and what we want to be. Whitman will pay him enough to compete with the rest of P5. At least I think so.

Probably not. Freeman would have never been at ND if he was here and wouldn't have the groundswell of support from the players and recruits.
